Braunton Battles The Breeze - The Salisbury Christmas Diner - 23/12/13
With little over a week before the end of 2013, I thought I'd get one more railtour in before the year's end. This particular railtour actually being the last steam hauled tour of the year, 'The Salisbury Christmas Diner' with 34046 'Braunton', running from London Waterloo to Salisbury via Andover, returning to London Victoria via Southampton. With dad available it was out in the car for this one, rather than go by train, and a good job too! As the weather (very high winds and rain all day) would later become so bad that it would cause chaos with the day's trains. Starting off on the outward run, we see Braunton running along the Southern Mainline passing a windswept Potbridge, on Totters Lane. Had the shower cap over the camcorder for this one, although with the lens and viewfinder exposed during filming, made zooming slightly awkward! A surprisingly light load for this run, with only 9 'Blood & Custard' Mk1s on. Next we get a few close ups at Salisbury during the servicing, the ones closest were particularly awkward to film, having to hold my tripod up against the fence, all the while trying not to let my umbrella get taken away by the wind!
Due to the severe wind, the return run would depart Salisbury an hour earlier and run at a reduced speed of 50mph. So with this information in mind we made an earlier get away to our next location, Dean, where Braunton is seen cruising through the horrendous conditions, the rain making a sort of aura around her. Much like the Potbridge shot, I had the shower cap stuck over the camcorder, although this time I only exposed the lens. Again, this made filming awkward, although it didn't turn out too bad, all things considered.
Last but not least was a shot at Shawford, the wind and rain was at it's worst by this point. To make matters worse, Braunton had been held near St Denys. So much so that she was only 4 minutes early as she passed us, so we were stuck under the shelter for about an hour waiting for something to happen. It was quite a relief when she did finally appear, meant we could finally go home and dry off!
Some people would call me mad, going out for steam in this weather....................and I agree with 'em!
Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with Pro Sound L92AA and Panasonic VW-VM2SE (Salisbury shots only) microphones.
Enjoy, and Merry Christmas!

More details about what you see in this UK travel vlog:
► The British Museum: Located in Bloomsbury, London, in the United Kingdom, this museum is dedicated to human history, art and culture. It was the first national public museum in the world. Their permanent collection has 8 million pieces of work, which also makes them among the largest on the planet. Most items were sourced during the era of the British Empire. Here you can see the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures and several Egyptian mummies, among other treasures.
► The British Library: Very close to King's Cross and St Pancras railway stations, this is the national library of the United Kingdom and the largest national library in the world by the number of items cataloged. It's believed to contain 150–200 million+ items from many countries. It's worth a visit to see their impressive collection of historical documents, ranging from letters to musical compositions and the Magna Carta.
► Harry Potter 9 3/4 platform: This one is for Harry Potter fans. You can find the trolley at Harry Potter's platform 9 3/4 in the concourse of King's Cross railway station. It's open for everyone to take pictures free of charge, and you don't need to be traveling by train to reach the area. There's also a Harry Potter store nearby.
► Heathrow Express: We left London via Heathrow Express, an airport rail link between London Heathrow Airport and Paddington station. Tickets on-site cost 25 pounds, but if you buy in advance you can get better prices. The service is operated by Heathrow Express Operating Company, and the entire ride takes 15 min.

► WHO AM I?
I am a Brazilian journalist living in the United States. After traveling the world working with sports, news, and events for over 15 years, I realized that what I really love is the travel part of it all. So I exchanged the life in the newsrooms and stadiums for the daily challenge of being an independent content producer.
I created this channel to share the beauties of the world... stuff that for so long I only kept to myself... Also to help people planning similar trips and to inspire more people to venture out and enjoy life!
P.S .: The guy who occasionally appears in the vlogs is my husband, Gordon. He is Canadian-American and is extremely shy, that's why he's behind the camera most of the time ;)
