Collected Stories - Clontarf Theatre treats at the Viking!
Since relocating to Ireland, Aoife Spillane-Hinks has earned a well deserved reputation, and many awards, as one of the most creative and innovative directors on the Irish theatre scene. She founded Then This Theatre Company with her collaborator, actress Maeve Fitzgerald and has staged a plethora of critically acclaimed productions over many years. Whether presenting classic drama or original works, they always breathe new life into every production.
Their current production is a welcome opportunity for Dublin audiences to see their work stage in the intimate surroundings of the Viking Theatre, above The Sheds in Clontarf. The play is Collected Stories, the acclaimed work by David Marguiles, which was shortlisted for a Pulitzer Prize. Originally written in 1996 it has enjoyed successful runs on Broadway, the West End and Los Angeles - attracting actresses of the calibre of Dame Helen Mirren, Sarah Paulson and Anne Marie Duff, to name drop a few.
The New York Times critic described the play thus - the emotional current between the performers takes on a sweeping, electric life of its own. You find yourself paying less attention to the dialogue than to the finely graded code of gestures and vocal inflections with which these women chart the rise and fall of a friendship....
Aoife joined Mick FitzGerald to discuss the current production and invite Dublin theatre lovers to schlep over to Clontarf and enjoy a theatrical treat. Collected Stories will play and The Viking Theatre until 25/March/2017 before transferring to other venues outside Dublin. Bookings advised.

Crypt - Temple of Sin
The seeds of what eventually became Cruachan were sown in this band - Crypt. Playing a mix of technical death/trash metal with black metal aswell (before the Black Metal explosion of the early 90's).
This demo was recorded in a few hours in The Shed recording studios by Joe Lahart in early 1991. We played a few gigs in Dublin and that was about it. I went on to form Minas Tirith after this which became Cruachan in 1994. I had just entered my teens when this demo was recorded.
The quality is really bad but its the only version of the demo I have been able to track down, if anyone out there has a decent copy please get in touch with me.

Keith Fay - Vocals
Martin Cahill - Guitar

DUBLINERS by James Joyce - FULL Audio Book | Greatest Audio Books
DUBLINERS by James Joyce - FULL Audio Book | Greatest Audio Books - Dubliners is a collection of 15 short stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914. They form a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle class life in and around Dublin in the early years of the 20th century. The stories were written when Irish nationalism was at its peak and a search for a national identity and purpose was raging; at a crossroads of history and culture, Ireland was jolted by various converging ideas and influences. They centre on Joyce's idea of an epiphany: a moment where a character experiences self-understanding or illumination. Many of the characters in Dubliners later appear in minor roles in Joyce's novel Ulysses. The initial stories in the collection are narrated by child protagonists, and as the stories continue, they deal with the lives and concerns of progressively older people. This is in line with Joyce's tripartite division of the collection into childhood, adolescence, and maturity. (Summary from Wikipedia)

Music and travel in cinema
Clip from HOW TO CHEAT IN THE LEAVING CERTIFICATE (1998) by Irish director Graham Jones - an indie movie that prefigured the Nuascannán philosophy -
At last a young Irish film director gives us what we want... The wet dream of generations of dossers and mitchers...
-dSIDE MAGAZINE
A neat, tense, low-budget black and white heist movie that delivers an unexpected moral punch...
-THE TIMES, UK
Manages to cram all the nightmares and bike-shed philosophies about that horrid time into one sitting... Witty, original and highly entertaining...
-THE BIG ISSUE
Engagingly irreverent, cleverly scripted and highly promising...
-THE SUNDAY TRIBUNE
Confident and deeply cynical... A promising and inventive first feature...
-THE IRISH TIMES
A remarkable film... There is no question that Graham Jones is a talent, whose lightness of touch and grasp of dramatic pace and dialogue are rare attributes indeed...
-THE REEL THING
An extremely intelligent and well thought out heist movie... One of the (very) few films to emerge on this island that is both carefully and consciously structured...
-FORTNIGHT
I hesitate to use the word 'promising' in conjunction with this film. The word suggests this fledgling effort only hints at future success. In fact 'How To Cheat' is a considerable achievement... A highly assured and impressive first feature...

GSD Talks: Tomás de Paor, “previous, next”
“‘I see earth. It is so beautiful.’
“Dawn asks,
‘What does the water surface look like?’
‘Darkish, with faintly gleaming spots.’
‘Do you get the feeling that our planet is round?’”
A selective reading of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin’s exchanges with ground control during the 108-minute space flight of Vostok I, launched on April 12, 1961, the first human orbit of earth in history. Seven short essays discuss the making of buildings, the making of machines, and that of time pieces under the titles “earth,” “hut,” “yard,” ‘paper,” “scissors,” and “rock.”
Tomás de Paor is founder and principal of a practice based in Dublin, Ireland. Concerned with perception and construction, his work has been extensively published and exhibited. An elected Fellow of the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland, de Paor was voted Young Architect of the Year by Building Design/Corus in 2003, and was nominated for the Mies van der Rohe Prize in 2005 and 2007 and the BSI Swiss Architecture Award in 2014. In 2015 he was elected a member of Aosdána, and in 2016 was elected International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
