Together Wines - Canberra Region
After travelling the Canberra region looking for the perfect land, climate and community to call home, Euan McKenzie and Carlin Stanford eventually settled on Verona in the Bega Valley.
Euan had previously studied Viticulture and Wine Science at Curtin University and winemaking at Margaret River, and the couple had dreamed of one day planting their own vineyard and making their own wine. Dedicated to making that dream a reality, they planted the vines a year after moving to their new 26 acre property.
Euan and Carlin have since established Together Wines, representing their desire to be together and work together as a family. The business produces a range of quality wines derived from grapes that are grown, hand-picked and produced on the farm.
Together Wines grapes are organically grown, because Euan says they wanted a bio-dynamic agricultural method to ensure a clean environment and farm for their children. “We had to work out how to produce a superb quality wine here,” says Carlin. “We couldn’t just copy our neighbours. And we understand that the Canberra market is really receptive to people doing different things – and that’s certainly what we feel we’re doing here.”
Carlin finds the Bega community very embracing, and says they’ve established a great network of friends in the area. They also love being involved in the local sports teams and weekend beach patrols. “It’s an amazing place to be!” she says.

Shaw Vineyard Estate - Canberra Region
After searching for a location that offered the perfect lifestyle and a great place to raise their kids, Graeme and Ann Shaw purchased 'Olleyville' to plant the vineyard in 1998.
A year later, they planted 85 acres of grape vines, and became a grape-grower for Australia’s then-largest wine company. In the years that followed, Shaw Vineyard Estate began producing its own range of premium cool climate wines, winning an array of national and international awards for excellence.
The family business now employs their son, daughter and son-in-law, and a number of local staff. Graeme says their number one preference is to stay local, and use local suppliers wherever possible.
Shaw Vineyard Estate is a half hour drive to Canberra, and enjoys easy access to the vibrant Canberra restaurant scene. Graeme says that the Canberra region is gaining a worldwide reputation for quality grapes, with Canberra region wines now found throughout Canberra and Sydney. The business also exports wines to China, Singapore, Philippines, Vietnam and Thailand.
Of living in the Yass Valley, Graeme says that they love being able to use Canberra’s facilities, while living in the country. “Canberra is a half hour drive. We can get to the snow or beach within an hour and a half. And, we’re in a great country area for a great country lifestyle!”

Welcome to Prize Wines. A sporadic video blog about the wines I'm drinking now.
Please bear with me as I approach this from a casual wine drinker background. I'm not a wine grower. I'm a social wine drinker. So my description or off the cuff comments may not cover all the nuances of the wine. If you'd like to add more to my description of a particular wine, especially if you're the wine grower, distributor or retailer please feel free to comment below.
To keep updated on when further videos are uploaded, please subscribe by clicking the subscribe button at the top of the page.
This review may not reflect the reviews of other wine drinkers and wine organisations I may be associated with and are mine alone.

Thank you for watching my wine reviews.
I've received many fantastic and appreciated comments from people all around that have found the videos useful and I have seen a dramatic increase in the amount of people watching them (thank you, thank you very much), so in 2015 I will return with more wine review videos.
If you are a wine producer and would like me to review your wine for free, please click on 'about' on my channel and send me a message. I'll email you the address to post the wine to as soon as possible. If you find the video useful you are welcome to use it on your website. Videos are recorded with a Samsung Galaxy Note II mobile and are completely unscripted.
I cannot guarantee that I will be able to review every bottle of wine I receive but I will endeavour to do so. If your wine tastes great, it'll definitely get a review. If it doesn't, I would not wish to upload the video in case I was just unlucky enough to get a bad bottle, or there was some bottle shock in delivery, or it had been affected by the heat.
I'm not a sommelier so, in that sense, you can receive down-to-earth reviews from the point of view of a real customer who just loves wine.
If you're an enjoyer of fine wines like me and you like these videos and would like to contribute in some way, feel free to leave a comment below on what your favourite wine is like. If you're interested in supporting the creation of future videos, please consider buying our ebook: Secret Sydney Bars Walking Tour Guide 2014: A Guide to Finding Over 37 Interesting, Unique and Hidden Bars in Sydney City, from The Rocks to City Centre. It's available on Amazon for Kindle. You can find out more about it here: (We make about 25c from every sale so every little bit helps!)

I also now have a Face Book page on wine. Early days yet but if you could 'like' it, that would be very much appreciated.

Ep 215: The Grape Miniseries - Syrah
First off, we discuss Sonoma Underground, the event I'm co-producing on 24 February 2018 to showcase 15 amazing, underground producers in Sonoma that are hard to find, don't get the press they deserve, and make outstanding wines. Limited tickets available to you! Get yours: undergroundwineevents.com
Then we talk Syrah!
Syrah is one of tastiest grapes in the world but because it changes based on where it's grown, it can be a bit of a risk to buy. In this episode, we cover the fundamentals of Syrah, why it ranges in flavor and what to expect from the regions that make it.
Here are the show notes:
About the grape:
Many different styles, many different faces Dark skinned, vigorous so have to tame it to get flavor Same as Shiraz NOT the same as Petit Sirah (cross of Syrah with Peloursin) Flavor depends on climate – you can’t generalize Lots of theories about its origins - but the wine is from the Rhône. It's a cross of Dureza in Ardeche and Mondeuse Blanche from Savoie Old World – plants based on total site (terroir, esp soil), New World = climate, soil less important
Top Places that grow Syrah:
France Australia Languedoc Spain Italy Argentina South Africa CA Chile
Climate:
Low tolerance for too much heat and too little heat Buds late, ripens early – short growing season Vinification:
Co-fermentation – esp with Viognier (Côte Rôtie and Australia) – no more than 5%, with Marsanne and Roussanne in Hermitage (up to 15%) Stems and oak play a role Places:
Rhône
Northern Rhône: General flavors – peppery when less ripe, fruity and perfumed when more ripe Côte Rôtie: floral, roasted, bacon, lavender notes Hermitage: minerally, tannic, bacon, herbs Cornas – fruity, heavier, less nuanced Crozes –Hermitage and St-Joseph: flatter areas -- lighter, more peppery, floral, earthy, great values Southern Rhône Hot and dry, Syrah gets overripe – need cooler, north-facing sites to slow ripening, Grenache gets best sites, Syrah is part of the blend Known as an improver variety in Languedoc and Provence with Grenache and Mourvèdre Australia
Much hotter than Rhône – heavier styles Barossa: Benchmark Shiraz– chocolaty, dark fruit Best versions are dry-farmed Victoria, Canberra, Western Australia - More Rhône-like versions McLaren Vale: Different styles often like milk chocolate Clare Valley: dark cherry Sometimes blended with Cabernet Sauvignon Penfolds Grange is the most famed version Check out the podcasts with Simone Madden-Gray for more info! United States:
California: Dry Creek Valley, Paso, Central Coast areas, some Napa as GSMs or alone. Washington State: Some are big and full of plum, cooler sites in Yakima very nice with bacon. Outstanding in Walla Walla
Chile:
Colchagua – warm, fruity San Antonio Valley – Limari and Elqui – lean with some fruit but not over the top South Africa
Swartland is the best – fruity, spicy, but restrained
New Zealand
Needs hotter sites: Gimlet Gravels in Hawkes Bay, some in Marlborough
Italy
Sicily, versions from Planeta, Used in Super Tuscans
