An Eames Celebration
Ausstellung von 30.09.2017 – 25.02.2018
Museum, Gallery, Schaudepot, Feuerwehrhaus
After a major fire destroyed much of the premises in 1981 and made it necessary to reconstruct the factory compound, Vitra resolved to build its own fire station. The design of the Fire Station was assigned to the London-based Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid. She created a building housing a garage for fire engines along with another wing containing locker rooms, showers and common areas. The sharp-angled sculptural forms of the Fire Station were cast in situ using a complex shell construction method and contrast with the orthogonal order of the adjacent factory buildings. The Vitra Fire Station was the first full-scale work by Zaha Hadid ever to be realised and is regarded today – along with Frank Gehry’s building for the Vitra Design Museum – as a key work of so-called Deconstructivism and of late twentieth-century architecture in general. Today the building is used for exhibitions and special events.

Vitra House Weil am Rhein Germany
Vitra House at the Vitra Campus - Weil am Rhein, Germany
Herzog & de Meuron, 2010. As the purpose of the VitraHaus is to display home furnishings, the architects of the VitraHaus, Herzog & de Meuron, took up the idea of the archetypal house, as the proportions and dimensions of the rooms bring to mind residential space that is familiar to us - the architects use the term domestic scale. The individual houses which have the general characteristics of a showroom are with few exceptions glazed at the gable ends only. Superimposed in five storeys and overhanging in some cases by up to 15 metres, the twelve houses which each intersect the gables of the storey below create an almost chaotic whole.
From 1955 to 1981, the Vitra site in Weil am Rhein saw the successive addition of various manufacturing and warehouse structures that yielded a somewhat coincidental and improvised architectural composite. In 1981, most of these buildings were destroyed by a major fire. Although insurance funds only covered a six-month interruption in production, the company did not wish to settle for anonymous standardized industrial structures or a solution with temporary facilities. The architecture was to be functional and offer a pleasant work environment while also fulfilling aesthetic requirements. Assigned to the architect Nicholas Grimshaw, this first project was followed by further buildings over the years, resulting in a heterogeneous ensemble of contemporary architecture: the Vitra Campus.
Vitra stands for an architectural concept that unites buildings by some of the most influential architects in the world at the Vitra Headquarters in Birsfelden (Switzerland) by Frank Gehri and on the Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein (Germany). We have here buildings of Jean Prouvé, Buckminster Fuller, Frank Gehri, Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid, Sanaa and Herzog and De Meuron

Campana Brothers at Vitra Design Museum Part 1
| After our interview with the Brazilian designers Fernando and Humberto Campana at Design Miami in December 2008 we now had the opportunity to have a closer look at the works of the two brothers.
The Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein near Basel presents an exhibition called Antibodies (Antikörper) that spans 20 years of collaboration between Fernando and Humberto Campana from the first sculptures up to the interdisciplinary works of today.
The retrospective emphasizes the artistic working method and explains how the works take shape, based on prototypes, experiments and one-off pieces.
Humberto Campana (born in 1953) and his brother (born in 1961) are recognized as the most significant designers in present-day Latin America. They have worked together as furniture designers in Sao Paulo since 1989. Humberto came to the partnership as a self-taught artist with a degree in law while Fernando had been trained as an architect. Campana works such as the Favela and the Vermela armchairs, the Plastico Bolha easy chair made of bubble wrap became icons of contemporary design.
VernissageTV spoke with the curator of the exhibition, Mathias Schwarz-Clauss. In the first video of this 2-episode segment, Mathias Schwarz-Clauss, an art and design historian, talks about the two designers and how they work together and the concept of this major retrospective at the Vitra Design Museum.
