This is a hike that we tried to talk ourselves out of many times: It's rainy, we don't have a warm enough coat, there's no guarantee that we'll even get to see the sunrise, etc. etc. I guess that's what makes it so sweet in the end. We set off on an adventure with ZERO guaruntees but (this time) it was 100% worth it.
Its our last adventure in Boquete before we drop off the rental car and return to sea level. So grab your warm beverage (or a boozy one), throw on your best jacket and join us on a hike to the highest point in Panama, on top of a volcano and WAY above the clouds.

VOLCAN BARU BOQUETE, PANAMA
Descending from the summit of Volcan Baru located in Boquete, Panama. Extreme off road. We leave out at 0400hrs to arrive at the summit for 0600hrs. This allows you to have the opportunity to watch the sunrise and sea both the Atlantic/Pacific Oceans. All inclusive. A1 PRIVATE TOURS.

This is my most memorable travel memory to date. I went on the most physically taxing hike of my life to the highest peak in Panama. 3474m elevation. Saw both the Pacific and Caribbean oceans, a gorgeous view & a beautiful sunrise. 26km, 11h round trip. Puked 3 times on the way up. Cried for joy when I reached the summit. Do you think the view was worth it?

We had nothing but most wonderful memories from this place. It is tucked away in the mountains, a bit away from the downtown of Boquete, far enough that you can enjoy the nature and clean mountain air, yet close enough that you can always go down into the city to get groceries, hit bars and restaurants or even see the doctor (had to see the doctor one day on during this trip and private 24/7 clinic charges only 12$ for a professional private english speaking doctor). If you need some advice or guidance - let me know, would be happy to share experience.
4x4 Offroad to Volcan Baru, Boquete Panama
We started at 4 am. Our Guide, Ronnie and his Chevy Diesel 4x4, got us to the top to see the sunrise. I'll have other posting of the pictures from the top.
The ride and the view was UNFORGETTABLE!!!
Don't even think about driving to the top in your own vehicle or without a very experienced guide. You can hike to the top in about 6 hours (do the math but don't miss the sunrise). The hikers walking to the top were down when we got to the base.
Next time I'll ride with Ronnie to the top and walk down to take in the view.

El punto más alto de Panamá, es el Volcán Barú, un extinto volcÁn desde hace miles de años, peRO que actualmente desde su cima ofrece las más maravillosas vistas del amanecer y si corres con suerte y el día está despejado, puedes ver los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico a la vez.
Situado al oeste de Panamá, en la zona fronteriza con Costa Rica.
Además en el pueblo que está en las faldas del Volcán puedes encontrar artesanías, sitios arqueológicos, un lugar que es conocido como el huerto de Panamá, por la frescura de sus productos.

Visit Panama: Walk in Baru National Park Boquete
Don't bother with a guide to see the famous Millenary Querus Trees in Baru National Park. Do it yourself. And, if not interested in 1,000-2,000 trees that managed to live through a volcanic eruption. Don't bother with the hike.
Monkeys, what I was looking for, are not common here! This is an after-the-fact told to me by guide, Ruben. Sigh...you win some, you lose some. By the way, Costa Rica is on the other side of Mount Baru.

El volcán Barú Chiriquí es la elevación más alta de Panamá y es el volcán más alto del sur de América Central, con una altura de 3475 msnm.
Hola mi nombre es Jorge López guía de BaruExpeditions y Wild Treks Panamá. En mi experiencia como guía especializado en áreas protegidas he subido el Volcán Barú más de 250 veces y he trabajado con muchas personas que han subido muchas cumbres, pero en especial el Chirripó (el más alto de Costa Rica 3820 msnm) y el Kilimanjaro (el más alto de África 5891,8 m pico Uhuru en el Kibo). Ambas son cimas más altas y con distancias más largas que el Volcán Barú que mide 3475 msnm. Conquistar el Kilimanjaro toma varios días, con diferentes microclimas, mas su componente de altitud, pero lo que distingue al Volcán Barú es que los 1775 metros de ganancia de altura están distribuidos en solo 6.5k, esto lo hace muy difícil en poco tiempo. Por lo tanto, algunos clientes concluyen que el Volcán Barú (ascendiendo por Paso Ancho) es extremadamente fuerte en terreno en comparación con el Kilimanjaro y el Chirripó por su corta distancia en distribución de altura.
Aclaración! hay dos rutas para ascender al volcán Barú: Paso Ancho 6.5k (sendero) y Boquete 13.5k (camino para autos modificados 4×4), Por Boquete el descenso y ascenso es más fácil por su distribución de altitud en 13.5k.
Toma nota de estos datos al prepararte física y mentalmente.

Hello my name is Jorge Lopez, BaruExpeditions and Wild Treks Panama Guide. In my experience as a Guide specialized in protected areas, I have summited the Baru Volcano More than 250 times and I have worked with many people who have summited many peaks around the world, but especially the Chirripo (the highest one in Costa Rica 3820 masl) and the Kilimanjaro (the highest one in Africa 5891,8 m Uhuru Peak in the Kibo). Both are the highest peaks and with longer distances than the Baru Volcano, which is 3475 meters above the sea level. Reaching the summit of the Kilimanjaro takes several days, having to go through different microclimates and its altitude component, but what makes different the Baru Volcano is that the 1775 meters of elevation gain are distributed in only 6.5k, that makes it very difficult in a short period of time. Therefore, some customers conclude that the Baru Volcano (ascending by Paso Ancho) is extremely hard in terrain compared to the Kilimanjaro and Mount Chirripó for its short distance and distribution of altitude.
There are two ways to summit the Baru Volcano: Paso Ancho 6.5k (trail), and Boquete 13.5k (route for modified cars 4×4). By Boquete route it is easier since its altitude distribution is 13.5k.
Take note of this information and prepare physically and mentally.
We stay up all night hiking in the dark, to reach the highest point in Panama to experience the most amazing sunrise we have ever seen! this sunrise is incredible to keep to ourselves! The views are spectacular, of staying up and hiking all night.

The roof of Panama (Volcan Baru Adventure E6)
After shivering all night I manage to pull myself out of the sleeping bag and hike the rest of the way up the volcano. I was a bit too tired to enjoy myself up there. The only thing I could think about was being out of water and dreading the ride down.
