World War I Centennial: U.S. in France, 1918
The U.S. entered World War I in April 1917, but it was a year later when American Army soldiers and Marines saw their first major combat on the Western Front. This Memorial Day on American History TV, we'll look back 100 years to key battles in northeastern France near the town of Chateau-Thierry and at Belleau Wood. More than 10,000 Americans died, were wounded, or went missing in this area.
France, US, Germany commemorate WWI Battle of Belleau Wood
(27 May 2018) High-ranking military officials from the U.S., France and Germany took part in Memorial Day ceremonies on Sunday to mark the centennial of the battle of Belleau Wood - a turning point in World War I and a key moment in Marine Corps history.
The ceremony at the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in the village of Belleau included speeches by military officials prayers, wreath laying, reading of poems and the national anthems of the three countries.
A crowd of more than 5,000 attended the event celebrating the fierce and deadly month-long battle considered as the first major engagement of U.S. troops in the war, especially Marines whose bravery helped the Allied Forces win in Belleau.
Among them was Mack Shively, 67, grandson of World War I Marine Corps Private Norman Alfred Roberts.
Roberts, wounded during the Battle of Belleau Wood in June of 1918, made it home to America before the war ended.
His unit commander Lt. Carleton Burr was killed in nearby Vierzy, France in July 1918 and buried in the America Cemetery of Belleau.
