The wadi Rum (Jordanie / Jordan / الأردن) in 1991
(EN) Wadi Rum (Arabic: وادي رم) also known as The Valley of the Moon (Arabic: وادي القمر) is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in south Jordan at 60 km (37 mi) to the east of Aqaba. It is the largest wadi in Jordan. The name Rum most likely comes from an Aramaic root meaning 'high' or 'elevated'. To reflect its proper Arabic pronunciation, archaeologists transcribe it as Wadi Ramm. The highest elevation in Wadi Rum is Mount Um Dami at more than 1,800 m (5,900 ft) above sea level. Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures--including the Nabateans--leaving their mark in the form of rock paintings, graffiti, and temples. As of 2007, several Bedouin tribes inhabit Rum and the surrounding area.
In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917--18. In the 1980s one of the rock formations in Wadi Rum was named The Seven Pillars of Wisdom in memory of Lawrence's book penned in the aftermath of the war, though the 'Seven Pillars' referred to in the book actually have no connection with Rum.
The area centred on Wadi Rum (the main valley) is home to the Zalabia Bedouin who, working with climbers and trekkers, have made a success of developing eco-adventure tourism, now their main source of income. The area around Disi to the NE, home to the Zuweida Bedouin and erroneously also thought to be part of Wadi Rum by visitors, caters more for Jordanian visitors from Amman, with campsites regularly used by party-goers. The area is now also one of Jordan's important tourist destinations, and attracts an increasing number of foreign tourists, particularly trekkers and climbers, but also for camel and horse safari or simply day-trippers from Aqaba or Petra. In contrast, there are almost no local or Arab tourists though nearby Disi (not actually part of Rum) attracts young people from Amman at weekends. Popular activities in the desert environment include camping under the stars, riding Arab horses, hiking and rock-climbing amongst the massive rock formations.
Jabal Rum (1,734 metres (5,689 ft) above sea level) is the second highest peak in Jordan and the highest peak in the central Rum, covered with snow and rising directly above Rum valley opposite Jebel um Ishrin, which is possibly one metre lower. The highest peak in Jordan is south of Rum close to the Saudi border. Named Jebel um Adaami it is 1,840 m (6,040 ft) high and was first located by Difallah Ateeg, a Zalabia Bedouin from Rum. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Red Sea and the Saudi border from the top. It is now a very popular trek from Rum village.
The influx of tourists to this once isolated area has substantially increased the financial fortunes of the Bedouin people, and it is not uncommon to see locals using mobile phones and driving expensive four-wheel drive vehicles; many also have wi-fi and computers to run their adventure tourism businesses.
The village of Wadi Rum consists of several hundred Bedouin inhabitants with their goat-hair tents and concrete houses and also their four wheel vehicles, one school for boys and one for girls, a few shops, and the headquarters of the Desert Patrol.

Wadi Rum also known as The Valley of the Moon is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan 60 km to the east of Aqaba; it is the largest wadi in Jordan. Wadi Rum is Arabic for Sand Valley, as Rum means sand, especially light sand that can be carried by wind.
Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures–including the Nabataeans–leaving their mark in the form of rock paintings, graffiti, and temples. In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who passed through several times during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18.
The area is centered on the main valley of Wadi Rum. The highest elevation in Jordan is Jabal Umm ad Dami at 1,840 m high (SRTM data states 1854 m), located 30 kilometres south of Wadi Rum village. Wadi Rum. Jordan. As Bedouins living in the desert
Project of the travel show “Big Bag. Acoustic journey with Troubadour*”

Grab and share
* - Troubadours - composers and performers of poetry and songs during Middle Ages. They made their living in a variety of ways, lived and travelled in many different places. The classical period of troubadour activity lasted from about 1170 until about 1220, when the lyric art of the troubadours reached the height of its popularity.
SLOGAN OF THE PROJECT
“The world is a big bag!” – analogue of the phrase “The world is a small place!”, which is used to show your surprise when you meet familiar people in an unexpected place or another city.
UNIQUENESS OF THE PROJECT
1. Representation of a country/city/village by “sounds”, that is by all possible acoustic details, which are not noticed by common tourists.
2. The host of the project – Troubadour. A young musician, travelling around the world with his acoustic guitar. He stutters on the letter “F”, wears glasses, a bow-tie and a hat.
3. Alongside with the guitar the host always takes a vintage phone handset, connected to an up-to-date smartphone. He uses it to make calls to famous people, who have information about unique acoustic places in this or that city. Troubadour calls them to confirm the location of the sonorous places. In the Russian language the phone handset is “trouba” and thus there appears wordplay in the name “TROUBAdour”.
CONCEPT OF THE PROJECT
Troubadour – the host of the project – comes to a place, where he has never been. He doesn’t know the language, but he has to solve several tasks by all means:
1. To find in an unfamiliar country/city/village:
• the loudest place
• the quietest place
• a unique sound, which is specific for this very corner of the world. And it can be not only a sound of a national instrument! It can be roar of the streets, river or waterfall, striking of a clock on the main place of the city, hum of the market or warble of a rare bird, chiming of bells or shouts of children during a national outdoor game. National speech melody, in fact, can also refer here.
2. To find a compatriot in a foreign country, who will tell/show/prove why this place is a must to visit.
3. To learn the most famous folk song of the place in the native language with the help of the new friend and local people and to try to earn money by performing it. This also works as one of the image details of Troubadour, strolling young musician.
TRANSMEDIA COMPONENT
Simultaneously with the start of the TV project “Big Bag” there will be launched an internet project aimed at search of the most sonorous places on the planet. It is planned that people – internet users, who love their cities and countries – will start to record and upload videos showing the acoustic places on a special portal. Thus, in a certain time there will be formed an audio encyclopedia with the most interesting sounds – both artificial and natural and absolutely unique.
“SECOND LIFE” OF THE PROJECT
Creation of a website “Audioplanet” with an electronic map of the audioworld, where just by one click you will be able to find and listen how the world sounds. There are also such variants as publication of an audiobook, creation of a dance album with the help of the audioworld map, performance of festivals, etc.
MISSION OF THE PROJECT
“Only with the help of foreign culture and foreign language you get a more profound and finer understanding of your own culture and your native language”

Tribe members to return to ancient Petra caves
(17 Jun 2016) LEAD IN:
Members of a former cave dwelling tribe of Petra are returning to the homes of their forefathers.
Al-Bdoul is one of Jordan's oldest tribes. It used to inhabit the caves in the stone-carved city until about 30 years ago when the government moved them into housing blocs outside Petra.
Residents say crowding in the Bdoul tribe's government-built village has reached tipping point with zoning restricting the village's growth.
STORY-LINE:
The world-famous Petra draws thousands of tourists every year to its 2,300-year-old Nabataean ruins.
While admiring these massive stone temples, visitors to Petra might also notice hundreds of caves dug into the nearby pink rock.
And if they looked even closer, they'd see some of the caves aren't empty.
For the first time in 31 years, some people are moving back to Petra's caves.
Unable to expand their village adjacent to the site, dozens are moving back into the caves of their forefathers.
On the steep steps up to the iconic monastery of Petra perches Suleiman al-Bdoul's Halfway Shop.
Here, he sells trinkets, cold drinks, plus some free words of encouragement to passing visitors.
There are dozens of these shops around Petra run by members of the Bdoul tribe, traditional guardians of the site who brought the first westerner here 204 years ago.
Founded in the second century BC by the Nabataeans, an ancient civilisation of desert nomads turned urbanites, Petra was for nearly five centuries a highly-developed, agriculture-based society and crossroads for the silk and spice trade among Asia, Egypt, Greece and Rome.
Its importance waned after a devastating earthquake in 363 AD.
By 700 AD, it had all but vanished until it was rediscovered by a Swiss explorer in 1812.
Petra's unique desert ruins - buildings and tombs carved directly into red sandstone cliffs – have become a major tourist site in the last 50 years.
Most Bdoul work in the park during the day and spend nights in the nearby Umm Sayhoun village.
But now a growing number of people, like Suleiman al-Bdoul, have left the village and returned to Petra.
Every day, he locks up his shop and strolls down this ancient rock path to his family's cave.
His mother, Basma, waits with hot tea brewed on a small gas burner.
The inside is clean, with white walls covered with small decorative designs.
We've returned to the caves because us young guys have no place to stay in the village, says Suleiman.
So many of us have just a house with two rooms where 15 or 16 people live. One doesn't have the freedom to sleep or work. Thus we decided to return to the caves of our forefathers.
Suleiman's mother, Basma, was born in Petra and cherishes her memories of its nooks and crannies.
After the Jordanian government relocated the Bdoul tribe out of Petra to the village of Umm Sayhoun in 1985, Basma defied them and quickly returned.
We don't want Umm Sayhoun. We used to make the fire there on the sandstone plateau, she says.
We chatted around the fire the whole night. The village has too many cars and the noise lasts until morning.
Amidst concerns the tribe was damaging the site, authorities relocated them.
In 1985 the local authorities encouraged the Bdoul to move to this modern village called Bdoul Iskan (also known as 'Umm Sayhoun') in exchange for leaving the caves.
But tour operator, Raami Manaja, says authorities haven't held up their end of the bargain.
He claims zoning regulations haven't allowed the village to grow to match population growth.
Lately, because of the lack of land for the young generation to build on, which was promised by the government, a lot of the younger generation are going back into Petra, he says.
The chief of the Bdoul tribe is Salameh Eid Al-Fageer.

MyInspireProject EP2 – Jordan, a Spectacular Oasis in the Middle East
Welcome to the second episode of My Inspire Project. This time, we would like to share with you our journey to #Jordan as Middle East has been a completely strange territory for us. After a last minute change of our schedule and a long flight from New York, we arrived in Jordan, starting the unexpected journey in this raw gem and cultural hub in the Middle East. This amazing adventure turned out to be a trip of our lifetime...
From the innovative modern lifestyle to the impressive ancient civilization, we started our journey in the capital #Amman to explore the modern Muslim living city. After the urban city life, we visited an ancient Madaba town for the magnificent mosaics and historical sites that has been existed over centuries and generations. We headed north to Pella area and Jordan Valley for an artistic retreat at House of the Artist. While driving along the main King's Highway towards south, we witnessed the advanced infrastructure and initiative for the renewable and green energy in the country. We experienced the sand storm during our road trip just like in the movie scene before we arrived at Feynan Ecolodge to embrace and nature and be part of the sustainability program. After, we arrived in #Petra, one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, to explore this incredible lost city from 400 BC, from day to the night. Then we followed the ancient Bedouin route to Wadi Rum for a out-of-space glamping experience along with desert safari in the Red Valley. Later on, we stopped by Wadi Mujib for a challenging canyon and river tracing before we arrived in #DeadSea resort area to wrap up our journey in Jordan.
There was definitely no single ordinary moment during our trip and we could rewind the entire travel story over and over!

WADI RUM JORDAN Space Mistress JAZZ
MIE FOTO Wadi Rum (Arabic: وادي رم) also known as The Valley of the Moon (Arabic: وادي القمر) is a valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southern Jordan 60 km (37 mi) to the east of Aqaba; it is the largest wadi in Jordan. The name Rum most likely comes from an Aramaic root meaning 'high' or 'elevated'. To reflect its proper Arabic pronunciation, archaeologists transcribe it as Wadi Ramm. Wadi Rum has been inhabited by many human cultures since prehistoric times, with many cultures–including the Nabateans–leaving their mark in the form of rock paintings, graffiti, and temples.
In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who passed through several times during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. In the 1980s one of the rock formations in Wadi Rum was named The Seven Pillars of Wisdom after Lawrence's book penned in the aftermath of the war, though the 'Seven Pillars' referred to in the book have no connection with Rum. The area is centered on the main valley of Wadi Rum. The highest elevation in Jordan is Jabal Umm ad Dami at 1,840 m (6,040 ft) high, located 30 kilometers to the south of Wadi Rum village. It was first located by Difallah Ateeg, a Zalabia Bedouin from Rum. On a clear day, it is possible to see the Red Sea and the Saudi border from the top.
Jabal Ram or Jebel Rum (1,734 metres (5,689 ft) above sea level) is the second highest peak in Jordan and the highest peak in the central Rum, rising directly above Rum valley, opposite Jebel um Ishrin, which is possibly one metre lower.
Khaz'ali Canyon in Wadi Rum is the site of petroglyphs etched into the cave walls depicting humans and antelopes dating back to the Thamudic times. The village of Wadi Rum itself consists of several hundred Bedouin inhabitants with their goat-hair tents and concrete houses and also their four wheel vehicles, one school for boys and one for girls, a few shops, and the headquarters of the Desert Patrol.
A Travel Guide to Jordan
A Travel Guide to Jordan
Jordan is an extraordinary country. Although small in size and young in terms of nation state, it is blessed with some of the regions most revered historical treasures, some of its most spectacular scenery and some of its kindest and most hospitable people. It has a delicious cuisine, a good tourist infrastructure – with some great accommodation and knowledgeable guides – and under the much respected royal family, a stable government. Throughout its short history, Jordan has bucked the trends of its neighbours; by welcoming the foreign traveller with open arms, and gallons of sweet mint tea, in many ways it continues to do so.
Amman is a lively, liberal city, modern in character, yet with one foot rooted firmly in the past. With a history dating back to Neolithic times, its journey travels through the Greeks and Romans – when it was known as Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love’ – before being abandoned for almost a thousand years only to rise again in 1921 as the country’s modern capital. Today it carries an air of dynamic self-assurance, and is an easy place to hang out for a day or two. Things not to be missed are the downtown area, the fruit and vegetable market, the Roman theatre, and the citadel with the capital’s most famous monument, the Temple of Hercules.
From Amman the first thing you might like to do is take a day trip to visit the country’s most famous Roman town, Jaresh. Although Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlements can be found nearby, the town came to prominence during in the 1st century AD. Sites to check out here are the Temple of Zeus, the South Theatre and its impressive, and renovated, Hippodrome – which has seen a revival of the Roman sport of chariot racing.
Travelling south you’ll pass Mount Nebo, the site from which Moses showed his people the Promised Land and take a look around Madaba, where, among other things, on the floor of St George’s church you can see the first map of the Holy Land in the form of a wonderful mural.
But Jordan isn’t just about sites of antiquity, it also has some stunning natural wonders to experience. Just to the east of Madaba you can go for a float in the Dead Sea – and, if you so desire, cover yourself in the rejuvenating mud, or treat yourself to a spa or swim at one of the regions smart 5 star hotels – before enjoying remote, offbeat locations like the tiny village of Dana, which has recently been reinvented as an eco-village for travellers looking to explore the nearby reserve.
While most people enter Petra from the town of Wadi Musa, through the famous Siq, or narrow gorge, emerging at the Treasury, there is another route in. Taking the rarely used back entrance not only offers a spectacular walk, through the regions beautifully rugged terrain, it also means you avoid the crowds and start your tour of the amazing Pink City at the impressive Monastery, and thus save the Treasury till last.
And what a site Petra is – truly one of the wonders of the world. Covering some 250 square kilometres, the former capital of the Nabateans simply astounds. The beautiful pink rock, carved into magnificent facades showcasing the noble family’s temples and tombs, divided by mighty canyons and gorges, really does leave you speechless. At one time the city was home to some 30,000 inhabitants and the scale of the place is mind-blowing.
And finally you come to the most impressive of all the Petra sites, the famous Treasury, which simply has to be one of the most magnificent monuments ever created.
This is simply one of the most majestic desert landscapes you are ever likely to witness, a place where orange sands drift against towering red cliffs and immense vistas ride out under vast desert skies. This is a great place to stay for the night, either sleeping wild under the stars or in one of the impressive camps, the best of which is almost certainly Discover Circle, Bedu Camp.
And as dramatic as it is, Wadi Rum has been used as a location in a numerous famous movies.
And finally right in the south is the Red Sea town of Aqaba, which as well as being an important port and modern beach resort for locals, also has its place in history.
With plenty of good walks to be had, horse riding holidays to experience, even great diving in the Red Sea, Jordan also has its fair share of activities to enjoy. At the Feynan Eco Resort it has an award winning ethical hotel, at Karak and Shobak it has Crusader castles and in the Azraq Wetlands it offers some amazing birdwatching.

Drive to WADI MUSA + PETRA by Night (part 1)
SUBSCRIBE to get notified of our next video!!
This was our first full day in Jordan. We rented a car, opened our google maps app and just started driving south towards Wadi Musa which was our base for the night to visit one of the seven wonders of the world - Petra!
This is the first part of our visit to the ancient city built by the Nabateans. We visited Petra at night, walked into the canyon in pitch darkness with the path lit only by candles! It was absolutely magical and a bit unnerving! We also did it with like 500 other people, it felt more like a pilgrimage to Petra!

ABOUT US
We have been traveling together for the last 10 years. It all started when we applied to the Amazing Race show and they called us for an interview. We interviewed but didn’t make the final cut because we didn’t have enough ‘drama’ in our relationship. But that didn’t stop us from doing our OWN amazing race of traveling the world but at our own pace! We have just hit our 50th country and thought it would be fun to document our journey!
We are looking forward to hitting all 215 countries. Subscribe to our channel and join us on the adventure!!
