Waiheke Island is the most populated and second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. Its ferry terminal in Matiatia Bay at the western end is 21.5 km (13.4 mi) from the central-city terminal in Auckland.
Waiheke is the second-largest island in the gulf, after Great Barrier Island, and is the most populated island in the gulf, with 9,250 permanent residents; another estimated 3,400 have second or holiday homes on the island. It is New Zealand's most densely populated island, with nearly 100 people/km², and the third most populated after the North and South Islands. It is the most accessible island in the gulf, with regular passenger and car-ferry services, a helicopter operator based on the island, and other air links.

New Zealand! Waiheke Island (eileen's 30th) 2017
Heylo familee and bez fwens. This would be my first attempt at editing a video relating to travel, and it would also serve as some sort of a time capsule for us to remember some highlights from our adventures.
We'd love to share more of our celebrations and happy memories, so i guess i'll be uploading more of these, as much as i possibly can, and as much as my time-travel schedule allows.
2~3 December 2017:
Waiheke is the most populated and second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand.
('Gulf': noun; a deep and large area of sea, almost surrounded by land, with a narrow mouth; also known as an arm of the sea.)
At just a 40mins ferry ride from Auckland, Roy planned a surprise weekend trip for eileen's 30th birthday celebration, so she could eventually find out if Waiheke was worth the hype.
However, due to her strength in deductive reasoning, coupled with the fact that she is actually a very proficient time-traveller, she's figured out where they were headed just a day before the trip but still imagined it to be a surprise anyway.
很好 (thumbs-up memories):
- The convenience of walking to Wynyard Quarter/Wharf (ferry terminal), because we live in Auckland city (woohoooo!).
- Not driving, because we tend to bring heaps more stuff when using our own vehicle; which means, less stuff to carry.
- Arriving at Waiheke and meeting the guy from the car rental company immediately (forgot his name, oops) and having this inexplicable feeling of fear and excitement all at once, then realizing it was because this experience was very very similar to arriving in Bali for our honeymoon.
- An overall laid-back and relaxing vibe throughout the entire island. All i wanted to do was to lie down and to strum my ukulele, which we did.
- Seashells! A small bag full of Hearts of Te Fiti! :)
- The food from Mudbrick Bistro was so good that i refused to poop it out. But i did la eventually. And just for my information the cake was not free or anything; we ordered dessert and the waiter just added the candle and sang a very quick birthday song while struggling to light it in the wind. hahahaha that was funny.
- Ah yes and because of the return-ferry delay, i lived to see (and capture) one of the most amazing sunsets ever.
不怎么好可是还是很好 (thumbs-to-the-left memories):
- I am of the opinion that the good stuff would always triumph the bad, so... lesson learnt is to always use sunscreen waaay before exposure, because sunburns are no fun. But the skin-peeling was soo satisfying though.
- There aren't much free activities to do in Waiheke, so it could have been a smarter move to check if there were any ferry delays sooner. Then we might have had more time to get another awesome atas ice-cream hahahaha.
- We had zero alcohol on the 'island of wine', which actually should be up there with 很好 (thumbs-up)! Just perhaps some might say it would be a pity as we were right at the doorstep of plenty of vineyards.
More Facts:
1. Waiheke is accessible by regular seaplane services too! *faaancy (you could even book a private helicopter flight to the island if you're intending to be more fancy).
2. Instead of driving our car, Roy figured it was slightly more cost-effective to rent a car from the island, and he rented ours via Waiheke Island Motors at $70/day (Manual, Daihatsu Sirion), and we rented it for 2 days.
(Cheapest option would be to rent a scooter at $60/day.
Manual cars were $10/day cheaper than automatic cars and i love my husband because he can drive both and i can drive neither hahaha).
3. If you're intending to cover the extreme ends of the island, it is definitely a good idea to rent a car from the island (ours offered a free pick-up), or to drive your own vehicle and cross the sea via the same regularly-scheduled ferry services that we took. Competitive fares between Sealink and Fullers.
Alternatively there are bus services, but we haven't figured that out and were mostly told that they were not very frequent and wouldn't cover the entire island.
4. We stayed with a host via Airbnb (rented a room) and i feel that it wouldn't be appropriate to share videos of their private space so i didn't. Took heaps of pictures though, because their garden was superb and i wanted to tell Lauryn that her Liquorice was so happy! I have a feeling Xander and Arissa would love the little cottage and garden area too. :)
5. I have contemplated sharing further travel information and photos on a blog but have unfortunately not gotten around to it... yet. So... stay tuned?
See you (hopefully) soon then. Big hugs and farts,
Roy and eileen :3

Beautiful views of New Zealand 2017 part 1: Disney, Auckland, mount Eden and Waiheke island.
In this first part of our trip to New Zealand, we went from Amsterdam to Hong Kong, where we visited Disneyland. After that we flew to Auckland, where we picked up our rental car and explored Auckland: Mount Eden, an extinct volcano, the Auckland museum and we took the ferry to Waiheke Island. Next we traveled North to Paihia. Along the way we stopped at the Wangarei falls.

Scenic Coastal Trail Waiheke Island New Zealand
I mentioned in my previous video how Auckland was such a boring city. Well it still is, but if you do happen to be in Auckland, your best bet is to get away from the city and visit one of the many islands that surround the bay. I decided to check out Waiheke island which is a short ferry ride from Auckland harbor. I enjoy hiking, and Waiheke provided that opportunity for me. It was a good half a day trip to the island. Public transport is limited, but it is possible to hire a bicycle and bike the whole island on a full day if you push it. Renting a car is also possible but an expensive option. Or you can do the many scenic walks along the coastal trail which I did. The trails intersect from one part of the island to the other, criss-crossing roads, leading up to vineyards, rich island getaway houses by millionaires. I haven't been to Hawaii, but I can imagine Hawaii being like this place. Definitely worth a visit.
