WHITBY | A walk around the streets of Whitby ????
WHITBY | A walk around the streets of Whitby
We take a walk through the streets of the North Yorkshire seaside town of WHITBY, famous for it's Abbey, it's Harbour and it's shopping.
Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts.
Whitby is famous for many things: it's a traditional seaside resort with Blue Flag beaches, and has some of the best fish and chips around. But there's so much more to discover here...
Fish and chips and ice cream; history and culture; vampires and Goths: it’s all on offer at Whitby, one of the North East coast’s best-loved seaside towns.
With Blue Flag beaches and many attractions, including the world-famous steam North Yorkshire Moors Railway, Whitby is the perfect base for a family holiday. But it doesn’t end there. Whitby wallows in history, including fishing, the jet industry (did you know that it’s still the best place in the world to find the gleaming black gemstone so beloved by the Victorians?), Captain Cook (who was born nearby, and whose famous ship the Endeavour was Whitby-built) and whaling. And its literary connections – Bram Stoker’s famous Dracula features the town, with the vampire first coming ashore here from Transylvania in the guise of a black dog – have inspired the world famous Goth Festival, which now takes place twice a year, in the spring and around Hallowe’en

Whitby Walking Tour
On Friday morning I went to my favourite cafe at the end of the pier in Whitby and other baked potato, and then decided I would go for a nice long walk around Whitby as part of my get fit campaign and on the spur of the moment I suddenly felt why not film it on my new Samsung videophone.
The thing is that there be no planning and when I watched a film back you can actually see the phone me jumping up and down and huffing and puffing around Whitby, but am putting it online I just hope it doesn't look so horrendously unprofessional. At the time I thought I will bother try to keep the phone steady I'll just make it look like an authentic walked a bit different to the usual polished type of film you tend to see good at the end of the day it was just a case of me legging it up and down the health of Whitby whilst spouting a little bit of information that I have gleaned about the place.
I did a film about Whitby in 2010 and it's been actually quite well received, it's usually positioned at the top of you tube is listing for the single word Whitby and it's about 5000 hits just over this year, but I did put more effort into that one :-) here is the link.
Sometimes people take things too seriously they spent ages polishing all aspects of their production but I just thought I'd go for the amateur look, which suits my technical abilities but awfully some people will find this of interest and skim through the film to see bits of the town that they're interested in and it does give you some idea if you've never been to Whitby or have not been there for a long time etc.
The only nice thing was that when I use the software because the film is almost one hour long I tried a few times and it kept defaulting the leaving sections of the film silent so I ended up having to mess about just get it to work with sound all the way through!
My god technology sometimes drives one around the bend.

Hawsker Whitby Walks In North Yorkshire Moors Walks, England, UK
Hawsker Whitby Walks was about 10 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of a disused railway track; coastal and field paths; bridleway track, road sections and a quayside. The walking was mostly on level ground or gradual slopes except for two steep ascents and one steep descent. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. We took care whilst walking on exposed cliff tops. There were 7 stiles to negotiate.

Whitby in Yorkshire is the perfect example of a traditional British seaside town. Our UK travel series is coming to an end and it lead us to Whitby famous for inspiring Bram Stokers Dracula and where Captain Cook set sail. It has everything you expect from a seaside town like fish and chips, arcades and rock. But the added bonus of potentially finding fossils (ammonites, reptiles and dinosaur) really makes this a special place. The style of the buildings gives it a quintessential European feel making this a must visit on your trip to the UK.

WHITBY | Walk from Whitby Harbour to Whitby Pier ????????????
WHITBY | Walk from Whitby Harbour to Whitby Pier ????????????
We start this walk at the beautiful Whitby Harbour which is home to many yachts, pleasure boats and fishing boats.
As we walk through the streets towards Whitby pier we can see Whitby Abbey overlooking us as we pass the many shops, pubs, and restaurants as well as the fishing harbour where the fishing boats arrive with their load.
Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Borough of Scarborough and English county of North Yorkshire. It is located within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk,
Whitby has an established maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port developed during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was (along with the nearby fishing village of Staithes) where Captain Cook learned seamanship.
Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed further on the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by its proximity to the high ground of the North York Moors National Park, its Heritage Coastline and by its association with the horror novel Dracula.
Jet and alum were mined locally. Whitby Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.
Whitby is situated on the east coast of Yorkshire facing the North Sea in a deep valley at the mouth of the River Esk. It has been a bridging point since at least medieval times and several bridges have spanned the river.
The current bridge, built in 1908, is a swing bridge with a 75-foot (23 m) span that separates the upper and lower harbours which have a total area of around 80.1 acres. The houses are built of brick or stone, often with red pantiled roofs, in narrow, steep streets, on both sides of the river.
The town is surrounded on its landward sides by the moorland of the North York Moors National Park and the North Sea abuts it on the seaward side.
The coastal areas are designated part of the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast. This stretch of coast, known as the 'Dinosaur Coast', the 'Fossil Coast' or the 'Jurassic Coast', is around 35 miles (56 km) long, stretching from Staithes in the north, to Flamborough in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
At Whitby dinosaur footprints are visible on the beach
