Warkworth Hermitage | While we were out at the Knights Tournament event at Warkworth Castle we realised that the Hermitage was actually open. We have visited Warkworth a few times but never had the chance to go and see the Hermitage, we made sure to take the chance this time.

Places to see in ( Warkworth - UK )
Warkworth is a village in Northumberland, England. It is probably best known for its well-preserved medieval castle, church and hermitage. The population of Warkworth was 1,493 in 2001, increasing to 1,574 at the 2011 Census.
The village is situated in a loop of the River Coquet, about 1 mile (1.6 km) from the Northumberland coast and lies on the main A1068 road. It is 30 miles (48 km) north of Newcastle, and about 40 miles (64 km) south of the Scottish border. An ancient bridge of two arches crosses the river at Warkworth, with a fortified gateway on the road mounting to the castle.
Warkworth is popular with visitors for its old buildings, its walks by the River Coquet, and its proximity to the Northumberland Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is twinned with Warkworth, New Zealand.
A church has existed on the riverside site in the village for around 1,200 years. St Lawrence church is a large and almost completely Norman building, which is unique in Northumberland. The first record of the village dates from 737AD when King Ceolwulf of Northumbria gave the church and village to the Abbot and monks of Lindisfarne. In 1174, the church was the scene of a massacre when some 300 people were brutally butchered by Duncan, Earl of Fife during a Scottish raid. John Law, was vicar of Warkworth in the 1770s.
Warkworth Castle was founded at an uncertain date; traditionally its construction has been ascribed to Prince Henry of Scotland in the mid-12th century, but it may have been built by King Henry II of England when he took control of England's northern counties. A timber castle was first documented in a charter of 1157–1164 when Henry II granted it to Roger fitz Richard. However it was considered feeble, and was left undefended when the Scots invaded in 1173.
In the 20th century Nikolaus Pevsner said of the imposing castle that the military engineer happened also to be a great architect. He went on: Warkworth must be approached from the north. With its bridge, its bridge-tower, then Bridge Street at an angle, joining the main street up a hill to the towering, sharply cut block of the keep, it is one of the most exciting sequences of views one can have in England. Warkworth once had a railway station, located approximately 1 mile west of the village. It was designed by Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and Berwick Railway. The station closed to passengers in 1958 and to goods traffic in 1962.

Warkworth Castle | Knights Tournament Day
Warkworth Castle on Knights Tournament Day | A wonderful event put on fairly regularly by #EnglishHeritage we saw one last year at a different EH location. As we really love #WarkworthCastle we really wanted to see the Knights Tournament event again but at our favourite castle.
Watch as we learn about life in the 15th and 13th centuries. We learned what they ate and how it was cooked, the different needle crafts and what they were used for also we saw many different arrow heads and what they were designed to do. We also go to see an archery competition and a demonstration of a troop drill. Including some medieval music played on Bagpipes and a Hurdy Gurdy.
A fantastic day, highly recommended.

S1 Ep13 - 3 Castles in 1 Day - Part 2 of 3 - Warkworth Castle
The 2nd castle on our visit to Northumberland for some medieval photo opportunities.
Warkworth Castle and Hermitage is run by English Heritage and is situated between Amble and Alnwick in the beautiful county of Northumberland UK.
It was built in the 12th century and is a Grade 1 listed building and a scheduled ancient monument.
Once again this video is not just aimed at the casual tourist but at photographers and artists.
If the stunning views of the castle from all angles weren't enough, what makes this castle extra special is the scenic views and photo opportunities from the riverside walks. On a good day, with no leaves on the trees, you will be able to shoot the castle from the riverside and get a beautiful reflection in the water as well.
There is plenty of parking and it costs just £3 to park all day.
The town is just a 5 minute walk from the castle and has a great selection of shops, pubs and eating places.
All in all, this place is highly recommended for anyone looking for either a family day out or a photography/painting/sketching trip.
Warkworth, Northumberland
A short tour of Warkworth, Northumberland, UK in February 2008
The magnificent cross-shaped keep of Warkworth Castle, crowning a hilltop rising steeply above the River Coquet, dominates one of the largest, strongest and most impressive fortresses in northern England. The castle's most famous owners were the Percy family, whose lion badge can be seen carved on many parts of their stronghold. Wielding almost kingly power in the north, their influence reached its apogee under the first Earl of Northumberland and his son 'Harry Hotspur', hero of many Border ballads as the bane of Scots raiders and a dominant character in Shakespeare's Henry IV. Having helped to depose Richard II, these turbulent 'kingmakers' both fell victim to Henry IV: the next three Percy Earls likewise died violent deaths.
Still roofed and almost complete, the uniquely-planned keep dates mainly from the end of the 14th century. It presides over the extensive remains of a great hall, chapel, fine gatehouse and a virtually intact circuit of towered walls.
Half a mile from the castle, tucked away by the Coquet and accessible only by boat, stands a much more peaceful building: the late medieval cave Hermitage and chapel of a solitary holy man.
Honours!! No27 top rated video this week!!
Thanks Folks!
