Home-Made Playground (1967)
Crawley, West Sussex.
Several shots of the new town centre in Crawley. We then see various shots of children putting together an adventure playground. It looks like great fun as they come down slides in little go-carts / go-karts, climb over bits of wrecked aeroplanes and sit in the wrecked cockpit of the plane, working the controls.
Some children stand around a small fire and cook sausages on bits of wire; the adult 'play leader' puts the fire out later with a bucket of water. More playing on improvised swings and rides and climbing up trees.
This playground would probably be considered highly dangerous today.

Imagination = innovation -- the role of Adventure Playgrounds: Ann Grabler at TEDxUofW
Ann attended Central Washington University, where she received her Bachelor's of Science in Recreation and Tourism Management, and it was through her studies that she was first introduced to the marvels of Adventure Playgrounds. Her amazing feat was opening Washington State's first Adventure Playground and only the fourth Adventure Playground in the United States. In fact, her work and the Adventure Playground garnered national attention, leading to a fantastic award: KaBOOM's Playmaker of the Month (check out KaBOOM for more information). In the fall of 2009, while employed with the City of Mercer Island Parks and Recreation Department, Ann set out to open the best playground on Mercer Island. Countless hours of research leading up to the implementation and opening of the playground painted a very scary reality of modern play - it is declining and the long term effects are huge. Ann's TEDx talk will explore the wonders of Adventure Playgrounds and the important role they have on inspiring future innovators who could create anything from inventions that curb climate change to the stories we love to get lost in. Ann promises to make you: laugh, pause to think about the role we all have in an innovative future, and instill that our imagination gives us wings even beyond childhood.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Sam Appleby: Crawley
An audio-visual tape-slide work
Though over forty years old, Crawley is, and will always remain a New Town. The spectre of the New Town has become ingrained in the popular imagination of post-war Britain. Widely seen as a particular kind of utopian town planning gone wrong, New Towns are seemingly places without identity that have come to signify a unique form of highly rational but soulless urban space.
For Sam Appleby the nature of this kind of space is more complex and, in turn, its representation is more problematic. In fact his approach in this work is not to 'represent' Crawley as such, certainly not in any conventional social documentary sense, but to simulate 'the elusiveness of space in general'. The images were made through long exposures of up to four minutes, compressing time but elaborating and energising space. The environment is deliberately transformed from something stable and utilitarian into something shifting, alive with immanent change - a highly charged electric drama, directed by the surveillant glare of artificial light.
The accompanying texts were drawn from a variety of sources: from the English anti-urban writings of the last century and from the Garden City movement which they spawned; from the British New Town movement and its ideals of design and community; from cultural theory and the discourses of space and geography; and from the popular press. They are intended as counterpoints to the pictures, suggesting meanings but not unravelling the wider cultural and political questions that lie behind the gleaming surface of the image.
David Chandler, The Photographers' Gallery, 1990
Sam Appleby was born in London in 1960. His family then moved to Crawley where he lived until he was 19. He studied urban geography in the early 1980s and later began a serious interest in photography. The print version of Crawley was first shown at The Photographers' Gallery, London in 1990 and subsequently toured. The audio-visual tape-slide version was also shown at The Photographers' Gallery and at Cambridge Darkroom.
