LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT—The Golf Club at South River (E-2)
Periodically, we take a look at a local businesses to give you something more than a peek in the window or a glance during a drive-by. We will dig deep into the history, the people, and of course the product. This series of episodes is focused on The Golf Club at South River. Located just minutes from downtown Annapolis in Edgewater, it is a private club like no other. Believe me when I say it is NOT your father’s golf club…not by a long shot! This week we sit down with Lex Birney. Lex is the Chairman of The Brick Companies who built The Golf Club at South River. Way back when, Exxon (who owned the land) sought out a local partner to develop the course. Having run the Chesapeake Sailing School, being headquartered in Edgewater and being a great environmental steward--the choice was easy. I'd have to give this course a B. It's a little too easy and repetitive for a full B+ not to mention an A, with a little too much noise from the kids playing in the water on the backside just off the course, and, a sad late trend, from the kids playing on the course.
But still a nice cheap (even with a cart) basic muni course just outside of Baltimore in Essex Md. down by the Key bridge, though a cut above many. The layout resembles the East course at Andrews but without the aircraft and the military assholes :) A decent length, good for beginner to intermediate players, though cheap and good enough to be a credible course for advanced players to play regularly to sharpen their skills. With some nice views thrown in for good measure, and good food too. Remarkably free of bugs, houses on or even near the course, and definitely no groundskeeper-fouling, all of which raises it up a notch or two. But the rough is virtually nonexistent and the greens are spongy and slow. This course is nowhere near as challenging as the Gauntlet, Little Bennet, P.B. Dye or Generals' Ridge, but then it doesn't need to be nearly as challenging as any of those courses and still be a fun course to play. It just needs to have *some* real, realistic challenge. And it does. Not some kind of stupid challenge like the rough is insane, the greens are glacier-slow or the fairways are 50 yards wide with no rough and steep slopes on both sides running off into dense woods where you have zero chance of finding your ball. It's a decent, solid, easy-to-play yet fun course. With some interesting views. A good round but not great. I am glad that I played there, and I wouldn't mind playing it again, but I would be unlikely to pick this course out of a list of courses especially with some interesting courses on the list that I haven't played yet. I did pick this one out of a bunch of Baltimore-area courses which I haven't played, based on the length, course-rating, the fact that it's on the water, the, price and the fact that I was planning to go to Petes Cycle in Bel Air for a bike demo which I ended-up blowing-off anyway.
I would say that this is a good prototype of a golf course for people just getting into golf. Fairly wide fairways, benevolent grass, just two tabletop greens, just a few holes with water in play, really only a few tough approach-shots. Enough to give you a taste of a truly challenging course without overwhelming a beginner or frustrating an intermediate and certainly *really* easy on the wallet at least for twilight though I'd expect that it's probably another $10 in regular hours, still that's $32 for 18 holes with a cart. A decent deal. Many courses in the DC area will happily charge twice as much even 3 or 4x as much for a course that is just a little better than this. True they are not just outside Dundalk but still this course is not that hard to get to and is quite worth the trip and the price. As opposed to say Enterprise which wants twice the money for a course that isn't even this good and then they want to kick you off the course 2 hours before sundown. I got to the course at 5:30, walked up to the clubhouse, paid my $22, got some food and a cart and got on the course and a foursome on the first tee INVITED me to start ahead of them and I still passed two more twosomes, again by invitation, husbands and wives playing, I started to goof-off taking extra shots on the back 9 and still finished before it got too dark to see my ball in the air...there is no way that I could have done this at Enterprise. It would have been a battle to pass anyone ahead of me and they would have kicked me off halfway through the backside. And it would have cost more. As much as I regret not having taken any pictures at Lees' Hill and as much as I want to go back and do that, the idea of paying another $50 to play Lees' Hill again just to take pictures of it when I could play a course like this instead for half the price...is exactly why I played this course instead of doing that.
