Echos from the Past Getzendaner Park, Waxahachie, Texas
I met David and Charles at Getzendaner Memorial Park in Waxahachie, Texas while video taping for this blog. They were out enjoying the beautiful day in the Park with their guitar and voices. Nobody, around just the fresh air, trees, birds, and squirrels. Go to sellcasa.com/waxahachie to hear the interview I did with them.
Waxahachie Chautauqua Building Some 25 years after Chautauqua Cultural Programs originated in New York state, annual Chautauqua Assemblies in Waxhachie began in 1899.[1]
Chautauqua is an adult education movement in the United States, highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chautauqua assemblies expanded and spread throughout rural America until the mid-1920s. The Chautauqua brought entertainment and culture for the whole community, with speakers, teachers, musicians, entertainers, preachers and specialists of the day. Former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt was quoted as saying that Chautauqua is the most American thing in America.[2]

Old City Cemetery (1881-present): Joseph K. Klepper obtained his Peters Colony
land grant and designated a portion of the property as a cemetery prior to 1848.
Over the years, the Klepper family first gave cemetery plots to individuals, but
late sold them. However, the first cemetery plot was not sold until 1882. Part of the reason for the lack of deed records may be the marriages of the Kleppers with other early Plano families.
Klepper and his wife, Nancy, deeded a portion of their land adjacent to the cemetery to the Methodist Episcopal Church, the earliest Methodist church in Plano, in 1874. The church building is no longer present but was in use until 1894.
The earliest death dates recorded on a marker in the cemetery are June 20, 1873,
The earliest death
date on gravestones of individuals known is 1881. The region where the cemetery is
located grew into an African American neighborhood after the Methodist church moved, and the cemetery has accepted African American interments since the 1925 burial of Judith Sherrill.
The cemetery has since been utilized by the African American community and it is said that this was the only cemetery available to the black community for many years
Early pioneers and their descendants are buried in this cemetery. Peters Colonists
R.H. Brown, Joseph K. Klepper, William Beverly, and Fountain J. Vance are interred in the Old City Cemetery, as are early settlers Alexander M Lyles, and Pembroke Lyles. Two of Plano’s first physicians, W.R. Stansell and Henry M. Beaty, are also buried here.
Other notable interments include R.H. Crawford, who was mayor of Plano 1914-1915, and Claude Mayes, who was a city alderman 1921-1922.
In addition, African American community leaders, their relatives, and descendants of pioneers are interred in the cemetery. Members of the Drake family, as well as the Sanders, Stimpson and Thomas families are represented.

Wanderings in Texas Cemeteries, and What We Might Learn From Them.
Enrich your next visit to a historic Texas cemetery with this illustrated tour from Dr. Kenneth Hafertepe. He will explain how these cultural landscapes have evolved over time by examining the materials and craftsmanship behind markers and the placement of graves. Hafertepe will discuss simple hand-made markers of wood, stone or cement and chart the rise of professional Marble Men in Texas who eventually offered customers imported stone as an option. Along the way, he will point out the culturally distinctive features of German, Hispanic and African-American gravestones.
Dr. Kenneth Hafertepe is chair of the Department of Museum Studies at Baylor University. He studies American material culture, decorative arts, and historic preservation. He is the author of numerous books and articles on historic buildings including the Smithsonian Castle, the French Legation in Austin, and the Spanish Governor's Palace in San Antonio.
