CITYLIFT Cape Town Foreshore Freeway Plan
How can the Cape Town city centre be reconnected with the water, overcoming the barriers of the freeways?
CITYLIFT is a vision for Cape Town which proposes to remove the elevated freeways, replacing it with at grade road, and lifting the city grid over and above it towards the harbour.
CITYLIFT would created a dense, vibrant, green new city district at the harbour’s edge, to act as a ‘grand urban balcony’ providing the public with views of the ocean as well as Table Mountain.
CITYLIFT comprises three parts: the city extended to the harbour (at upper levels), sub-surface strategic movement systems, and a new linear park that connects the city and movement levels.
The first step involves demolishing the Foreshore Freeway Bridge, dropping the working freeway to the ground and then gradually lifting the city up over this, creating a raised ground that extends the grid of the city at a height of approximately 7 to 10 metres above the existing ground level - lifting it over the public transport and cars moving below. This would allow the CBD to expand, providing more mixed-use space for commercial, residential and cultural facilities and deliver a brand-new city district. A four-lane road in both directions, including dedicated BRT bus lanes, along with parking and other services infrastructure to support the developments above, and a future interface with the harbour, would be built beneath the raised city ground.

Few can return to Cape Town's District 6 - 13 Dec 08
In the 1970s, South Africa's apartheid government declared Cape Town's District 6 whites only and removed 70,000 of its inhabitants by force.
As it is being rebuilt, only a few of the original residents have moved back. A political squabble is keeping thousands more away.

We loved the accomodation, if I could, I would live in an apartment like this! Richard responded very quickly when needed. We really enjoyed waking up to such a beautiful view, so close to restaurants, the beach, the centre and the road to things like chapmans peak, cape of good hope, Houtbay etc. And Jerry's around the corner is another lovely coincidence.

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway in Cape Town Central, South Africa
Table Mountain Aerial Cableway in Cape Town Central, South Africa
A visit to Cape Town would be incomplete without a trip up the famous Table Mountain which reaches a height of 1085 m at its highest point and had a broad flat surface allowing it to appear as a 'table' from certain angles, inspiring its name.
The glorious views over the Mother City starts the minute you step into the state of the art cableway (one of only three in the world). The floor of the 65 passenger cablecar rotates 360 degrees on the ascent/descent which takes 5-10 minutes to reach the summit/base travelling at a speed of up to 10m per second. Undeniably the best views over the Cape are to be taken in from this natural landmark mountain which allows all parts of Cape Town to be seen at once in all magnificence.
The mountain itself serves as a nature reserve home to many indigenous plants and animals. On the top there are a selection of viewpoints over the peninsula and the paths suitable for all ranges of the explorer from the handicapped to the avid hiker, maps are available on site. There is a curio shop and full cafe for refreshments and meals on the top. The weather can change without notice so be sure to have sunscreen and hats as well as warm clothing and of course remember to take your camera.
The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is a cable car transportation system offering visitors a five-minute ride to the top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. It is one of Cape Town's most popular tourist attractions with approximately 900,000 people a year using the Cableway. In February 2016, the Cableway welcomed its 25 millionth visitor.
The upper cable station is on the westernmost end of the Table Mountain plateau, at an elevation of 1,067 metres. The upper cable station offers views over Cape Town, Table Bay and Robben Island to the north, and the Atlantic seaboard to the west and south. Amenities at the upper station include free guided walking tours, an audio tour, meal options at a café and a wi-fi lounge.
The Rotair cableway was installed by Garaventa (Doppelmayr Garaventa Group) from Switzerland in 1997, the design being based on the Titlis Rotair cableway in Engelberg, Switzerland. Each car carries 65 passengers (compared to 25 for the old cars), and runs on a double cable making them more stable in high winds, giving a faster journey of 4–5 minutes to the summit. The floors of the cars rotate through 360 degrees during the ascent or descent, giving passengers a panoramic view.

Gilloolys Interchange (Johannesburg Ring Road)
Over the years, as Johannesburg has grown, the Ring Road has become frequently used by local residents for commuting between home and work. It is composed of three freeways that converge on the city, and form an 80-kilometre (50 mi) loop around it: the N3 Eastern Bypass, which links Johannesburg with Durban; the N1 Western Bypass, which links Johannesburg with Pretoria and Cape Town; and the N12 Southern Bypass, which links Johannesburg with Witbank, Klerksdorp and Kimberley. The N3 was built exclusively with asphalt, while the N12 and N1 sections were made with concrete, hence the nickname given to the N1 Western Bypass: The Concrete Highway. In spite of being up to 12 lanes wide in some areas (six lanes in either direction), the Johannesburg Ring Road is frequently clogged with traffic. The Gillooly's Interchange, built on an old farm and the point at which the N3 Eastern Bypass and the R24 Airport Freeway intersect, is purported to be the busiest interchange in the Southern Hemisphere. The N12 Southern Bypass, which cuts a concrete swath through the rocky hills of southern Johannesburg, is apparently very reminiscent of the freeways of Los Angeles, and together with Johannesburg's sunshine, renders a real Southern California feel to that part of the city.
