Slow motion of the tide at Whitby lighthouse
Having a short break at Whitby, North Yorkshire at the weekend and I have to say, I had a fabulous time amongst the Goths, fishermen and the Stone Island boys pub crawling looking for a fight or two.
I have to say there’s nothing like a seaside jaunt to remind you of the omnipresence of death. Goths, ghosts, vampires, ruins: Whitby has them all. Even its local stone, behind spectral shop fronts, is literally jet black.
Visitors flock year round to the most atmospheric town along the Yorkshire coast. The famous abbey ruins on the clifftop, and cobbled Georgian old town below, form a beautiful backdrop to days on the sandy beach or strolls around the vibrant harbour.
Bram Stokers novel Dracula was written in Whitby and was based on the story surrounding the Russian ship ‘Demeter’ which ran aground, with the only apparent survivor a mysterious dog that disappeared up the 199 steps to the Abbey.
Here is one of my favourites videos from the weekend
Top of Whitby Lighthouse
a vertigo inducing view from the top of the Lighthouse on Whitby's West Pier. At least worth it for the view... next to seaside, clear sky, 82ºF temperatures.

Places to see in ( Whitby - UK ) Whitby Harbour
Places to see in ( Whitby - UK ) Whitby Harbour
Whitby Harbour is sheltered by the grade II listed east and west piers each with a lighthouse and beacon. The west lighthouse, of 1831, is the taller at 84 feet (25.5 m) and the east lighthouse, built in 1855, is 54 feet (16.5 m) high. On the west pier extension is a foghorn that sounds a blast every 30 seconds during fog. New lights were fitted to both the lighthouse towers and the beacons in 2011. Whitby Lighthouse, operated by Trinity House, is located outside the town, to the south east, on Ling Hill.
Whitby Harbour you see today is the result of many centuries of man-made improvements to the original natural harbour formed by the estuary of the River Esk. Contrary to most people’s instincts the piers lie to the East and West of the harbour mouth, which actually faces due North. Whitby is one of the few places in the UK where you can watch the sun rise and set over the sea in summer.
The West Pier is easier to access and an excursion along the pier and pier extensions makes a fine evening stroll. From the land side, you approach through the fine ornamental gate, erected and dedicated in 2005 to Whitby’s generations of seafarers. On the way to the 80 foot-high lighthouse you pass the capstans and mooring posts, recalling the days when ships were ‘warped’ (hauled) in and out of the harbour by sheer manpower.
Leaving the pier, the bandstand at Scotch Head, hosts visiting musicians and performances through the summer. Across the road, at the foot of the Khyber Pass, lies the Lifeboat Museum recalling the many heroic rescues since the first lifeboat was stationed here in 1826. The current lifeboat station lies directly opposite, on the East Side of the harbour.
Continuing on the West Side, the shellfish house, ice house, and fish market occupy the rest of the waterfront along Pier Road. The harbour is still a busy working environment with the dredger waging constant battle against silt and mud. A small vibrant fishing fleet and a host of yachts and pleasure craft fill the upper and lower harbours, separated by the swing-bridge. Non-sailors can take a trip to sea on a variety of boats, whether for a day’s sea-angling or simply a short trip to enjoy the views and experience the sea spray.
The swing-bridge offers a great opportunity to watch the many craft on the move, particularly during bridge openings which take place in the 2-hour period either side of high tide and are marked by the ringing of a handbell by the bridge-men. Quite a sight to see 75 feet of roadway on the move – complete with its street lights

Whitby is a seaside town in Yorkshire, northern England, split by the River Esk. On the East Cliff, overlooking the North Sea, the ruined Gothic Whitby Abbey was Bram Stoker’s inspiration for “Dracula”. Nearby is the Church of St. Mary, reached by 199 steps. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, in the house where Cook once lived, displays paintings and maps. West of town is West Cliff Beach, lined with beach huts.

Hawsker Whitby Walks In North Yorkshire Moors Walks, England, UK
Hawsker Whitby Walks was about 10 miles in distance. The terrain of the route was a combination of a disused railway track; coastal and field paths; bridleway track, road sections and a quayside. The walking was mostly on level ground or gradual slopes except for two steep ascents and one steep descent. Route finding was easy with obvious paths, good waymarking and good landmarks. We took care whilst walking on exposed cliff tops. There were 7 stiles to negotiate.

WHITBY | Walk from Whitby Harbour to Whitby Pier ????????????
WHITBY | Walk from Whitby Harbour to Whitby Pier ????????????
We start this walk at the beautiful Whitby Harbour which is home to many yachts, pleasure boats and fishing boats.
As we walk through the streets towards Whitby pier we can see Whitby Abbey overlooking us as we pass the many shops, pubs, and restaurants as well as the fishing harbour where the fishing boats arrive with their load.
Whitby is a seaside town, port and civil parish in the Borough of Scarborough and English county of North Yorkshire. It is located within the historic boundaries of the North Riding of Yorkshire. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk,
Whitby has an established maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port developed during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was (along with the nearby fishing village of Staithes) where Captain Cook learned seamanship.
Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed further on the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by its proximity to the high ground of the North York Moors National Park, its Heritage Coastline and by its association with the horror novel Dracula.
Jet and alum were mined locally. Whitby Jet, which was mined by the Romans and Victorians, became fashionable during the 19th century.
Whitby is situated on the east coast of Yorkshire facing the North Sea in a deep valley at the mouth of the River Esk. It has been a bridging point since at least medieval times and several bridges have spanned the river.
The current bridge, built in 1908, is a swing bridge with a 75-foot (23 m) span that separates the upper and lower harbours which have a total area of around 80.1 acres. The houses are built of brick or stone, often with red pantiled roofs, in narrow, steep streets, on both sides of the river.
The town is surrounded on its landward sides by the moorland of the North York Moors National Park and the North Sea abuts it on the seaward side.
The coastal areas are designated part of the North Yorkshire and Cleveland Heritage Coast. This stretch of coast, known as the 'Dinosaur Coast', the 'Fossil Coast' or the 'Jurassic Coast', is around 35 miles (56 km) long, stretching from Staithes in the north, to Flamborough in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
