Whitehorse, Yukon (Klondike & Fishladder)
A few days including the tourist visit to the Klondike boat that is grounded in Whitehorse, it is beautifully restored and shows how people travelled in the early 1900's to the 1930's along the Yukon River. Very interesting and educational.
There is a dam on the Yukon River outside Whitehorse and to assist the Salmon migration each year they have built a Fish Ladder for the Salmon to get around the Dam, this assists conservationist to count salmon as the go through the ladder system and educational as you can see them moving through the ladder, by way of glass panels.
Klondike is free of charge
Fishladder is a gold coin donation
Very enjoyable and educational visits.

Alaska Tour - Whitehorse, Yukon Terr - Stop #8
Today we traveled north out of Skagway to Whitehorse heading for Dawson City and the Klondike Gold Rush!
In Whitehorse we visited the Whitehorse Rapids Fishway which features the longest wooden fish ladder in the World, then went to see the suspension bridge over the Yukon River where the Miles Canyon Rapids capsized many a gold rushers hopes! After that we took a tour of the SS Klondike which was a retired sternwheeler which ran up and down the Yukon River back in the day; then toured the Yukon Beringia center and learned about the land bridge that brought many animals to the Yukon. We also had a chance to throw an Atlatl which was a stick that catapulted a spear extra distance, and at night we went to the Frantic Follies for a great Can Can Show!
The following evening we had a chance to meet Michelle Phillips and her family. She is an active musher in the Alaskan Iditarod which our tour group sponsors! We personally sponsored one of her dogs, Phantom, based on the name of my quadcopter! Let's hope he pulls her to victory this year!

The Historic Riverboat - Whitehorse, Yukon
What is the most iconic landmark in all of Whitehorse? ... The S.S. Klondike of course!
Dry-docked beside the mighty Yukon River is where you will find the S.S. Klondike National Historic Site, and no visit to Whitehorse is complete until you've set your eyes on this piece of history. The GCAT crew did more than just look at this beauty, we were given the royal tour by Dan Verhalle whose job it is to look after the SS Klondike.
The SS Klondike is a history lesson on the development of the Yukon River and the riverboat industry during the Klondike Gold Rush era of the Yukon. It was the largest vessel of the British Yukon Navigation (BYN) Company which was a fleet of sternwheel paddle boats that plied the upper Yukon River between Whitehorse and Dawson City.
Originally built in 1929, she sank in 1936, then was rebuilt and launched in the spring of 1937. Restored to her original 1937-40 appearance, the S.S. Klondike pays tribute to an era of riverboat transportation and the inland water transportation system that linked the Yukon to the outside world before the advent of roads.
As we made our way around the decks, passenger quarters, and bridge we were transported back in time to the late 1930's. We could tell that the S.S. Klondike was more than just a transport vessel and offered a select group of passenger's complete comfort.
Next time you visit Whitehorse, make sure you pay a visit to this Northern Canadian piece of heritage and take a tour on the SS Klondike! You'll be glad you did.
Thanks for the tour Dan!

Story goes she was damaged on the last trip of the season, abandoned here on Hootalinqua Island.
