Dead Mall UK - LONDON Whitgift Croydon
For nearly two decades the Whitgift shopping centre in Croydon has meant to have been modernised, extended, demolished and rebuilt as a Westfield. Resulting in business unlikely to move in not knowing if their investment was going to be there long enough.
In the late 1960's and early 1970's The Whitgift Centre opened in stages in what was then a major hub of retailing in London, Croydon. As the years past, technology progressed, shopping habits changed and it lead to many shops going bust or merging, this was not the main battle for Whitgift though...
In the mid 2000's as internet shopping was getting real traction in areas of retail such as entertainment and clothing, building work commenced on London's new largest shopping centre (and second biggest in the UK) that when opened would take the crown away from Whitgift, it was also far more better served by London Underground which even today has far smaller presence in south London.
Westfield London opened in 2008 but another Westfield even bigger opened even closer in London Stratford in 2011 absorbing customers and retailers to brand new covered shopping space. That despite huge job losses in retail (particularly in 2008 2009 2011 2012) when significant collapses and mergers shut shops, Westfield had excellent occupancy.
London now had three significant shopping meccas that seemed to be robust against recession and declining high street retailing...
The world renowned Oxford Street / Regent Street / Bond Street
Westfield London (Shepherds Bush)
Westfield Stratford
Croydons Whigift now trailing behind with its 75% leaseholder in administration it looked gloomy for Croydon because will Whitgift and its cousin across the road Centrale ever be refreshed, extended or redeveloped?
It looked as if after several letdowns that new Westfield Croydon would go ahead and all was going fine until Australian company Westfield was bought by French Unibail-Rodamco and despite the new owners promising a major roll out of the Westfield brand... the Croydon project has been delayed again. Westfield London also having opened its extension in the same year (2018) making it the largest shopping centre in EUROPE.
Above misses out lots of detail but is briefly explaining Croydon and it's Whitgift plight, but there is another issue with Westfield and this site. The area is not really suited to well healed shopping anymore. The locals have been let down by red tape, indecision, and false hope for so long that it has left the area a bit downbeat.
Although great for shopping and bustling atmosphere... the retailers there have let their shops go a bit as they waited for Whitgift and Centrale plans to be made reality, shops have shutdown, merged and recessions happened while nothing happened to Croydon's shopping centres.
People with money who are likely to shop in Gucci, Prada, De Beers etc are now attracted two one of two Westfields in London and are hardly going to go to Croydon now. The people who live in the area also unlikely to go to such shops.
Large shopping Centre Anchors like Debenhams Marks&Spencer House Of Fraser John Lewis department stores all in different stages of survival retailing and opening significantly fewer stores or closing them down.
The anchor stores for a new Westfield in London since the 2005 plans have changed DRASTICALLY with major department stores British Home Stores (BHS) and Allders gone and the remaining unlikely wanting to put any money into a third major store it is unlikely that Westfield Croydon will be what was expected and the plans will yet again be revised or cancelled.
The only supermarket you will see in a Westfield is Waitrose and it along with its rivals ASDA Sainsbury's Tesco and Morrisons have problems of their own with Waitrose dragging its owner John Lewis down and Sainsburs and ASDA planning a merger, even if Westfield allow supermakets in it might still not happen as Lidl and Aldi are chipping away at UK supermarkets.
With food retailing, clothing and department stores in change and decline it doesn't leave much to open in Westfield Croydon.

VIRTUAL TOUR: Walking From East to West Croydon | SUMMER 2017 | London, UK
From East Croydon station, down George Street and through the High Street all the way to West Croydon. At the time of filming, Surrey Street market is closed for 10 weeks of improvement works, so the stallholders have all moved to the High Street.
Croydon is a large town in south London, England, 9.5 miles (15.3 km) south of Charing Cross. The principal settlement in the London Borough of Croydon, it is one of the largest commercial districts outside Central London, with an extensive shopping district and night-time economy.
Croydon Rave in Whitgift Centre. Westfield London uk
This was filmed a few years ago for a tv advert. It’s not a real rave and most of the people dancing are professional dancers. There are also a lot of actors & actresses all around mixing with the crowds to make it look even more believable. I did not film this video.
Whitgift Shopping Centre, South London UK | SUMMER 2019 | Superdry Store | The Heart Of Gaming
Croydon is a large town in South LONDON, UK. Famous people from Croydon include supermodel KATE MOSS, horror legend PETER CUSHING and action movie star JASON STATHAM. A few days after this video was filmed, Croydon Village Outlet (the old Allders site) was closed down and no access was permitted to the public or the shop owners. This turned out to be a last look at the popular retro video games arcade The Heart of Gaming which had been there since 2017. Best wishes to The Heart of Gaming for an even brighter future as they have contributed a great deal to the community of Croydon!

Croydon is a large town in south London, England, 9.5 miles south of Charing Cross. The principal settlement in the London Borough of Croydon, Croydon is one of the largest commercial districts outside Central London, with an extensive shopping district and night-time economy.
Croydon expanded in the Middle Ages as a market town and a centre for charcoal production, leather tanning and brewing. The Surrey Iron Railway from Croydon to Wandsworth opened in 1803 and was the world's first public railway. Later nineteenth century railway building facilitated Croydon's growth as a commuter town for London. By the early 20th century, Croydon was an important industrial area, known for car manufacture, metal working and Croydon Airport. In the mid 20th century these sectors were replaced by retailing and the service economy, brought about by massive redevelopment which saw the rise of office blocks and the Whitgift Centre, the largest shopping centre in London until 2008. Croydon was amalgamated into Greater London in 1965.
Croydon lies on a transport corridor between central London and the south coast of England, to the north of two gaps in the North Downs, one followed by the A23 Brighton Road through Purley and Merstham and the main railway line and the other by the A22 from Purley to the M25 Godstone interchange. Road traffic is diverted away from a largely pedestrianised town centre, mostly consisting of the North End. East Croydon is a major hub of the national railway transport system, with frequent fast services to central London, Brighton and the south coast. The town is unique in Greater London for its Tramlink light rail transport system.

HISTORICAL GEM in SOUTH LONDON: the WHITGIFT ALMSHOUSES, Croydon
#EXCLUSIVE# Tour around the Quadrangle and gardens, the Common Room, the Chapel and the Audience Chamber.
Step through the gates of the 400 year old Whitgift Almshouses and you will find yourself in a hidden oasis of peace and tranquillity.
The Whitgift Foundation was established by John Whitgift, Archbishop of Canterbury, to provide care for the elderly and education for the young.
As Archbishop, Whitgift spent much of his time travelling between Lambeth, Canterbury and Croydon, favouring the latter as an idyllic summer retreat and residing at the Palace in Croydon (now Old Palace School) - a convenient location near to London, the hive of royal and political activity. A few years after the defeat of the Spanish Armada and with the country plagued by bad harvest and wounded sailors, Whitgift decided to help the needier section of the population. He petitioned for and received permission from Queen Elizabeth I to establish a hospital and school in Croydon.
The two foundation stones of the Hospital of The Holy Trinity, now known as The Almshouses, were laid in March 1596. This philanthropic vision saw the birth of The Whitgift Foundation, leaving a lasting legacy to the people of Croydon through its mission of care for the elderly and education for the young and which lies at the heart of their charitable activity today.

----------------------------------------
Croydon is in the London Borough of Croydon spread across both London and Surrey. It's a large town directly to the south of central London in the midst of Bromley, Thornton Heath, Mitcham and Carshalton.
Originally a mediaeval market town, Croydon was the go-to place for the valuable Saffron spice and its place name is believed to be derived from this.
Croydon boasts a large shopping complex in the shape of the Centrale and the Whitgift Centre which was the largest shopping centre in London until 2008.
This Greater London town is distinctive for its TfL Tramlink light rail transport system. Croydon's version of the DLR. It began operating in 2000 as the first London tram system since 1952. All 17 miles of it are now included on the London Tube Map.
The council seems to have given tacit approval of an arts quarter over the last few years. Dozens of striking murals are emerging on walls, shutters and fences around the town centre as part of the 2015 Croydon Mural Project which has produced over 100 murals to date.
Croydon College is a further education college established in 1868 offering BTEC Diplomas, NVQs, A levels and entry level courses. For the last few years, it has maintained an Ofsted rating of 'good'. The BRIT School for performing arts and technology also lives in Croydon and has birthed a slew of notable actors and musicians.
Recently, the popular food, retail and club outlet, Boxpark, forged out of shipping containers, opened a venue in East Croydon. It has revitalised the night life and trendy image among younger punters.
The town is expected to see further changes through its Vision 2020 urban planning initiative which aims on promoting Croydon as a hub of living, retailing, culture and business with £3.5 billion committed to development projects.
The Shirley Windmill has had its fair share of life tribulations. Its been abandoned, set on fire, replaced, eaten by birds, struck by lightning, had limbs broken off and was listed for sale in the paper as an April fool's joke by school pupils in 1971.
In 1803, Croydon opened the worlds first public railway. The Surrey Iron Railway ran from Croydon to Wandsworth to facilitate the area into becoming a growing commuter town.
Today, East Croydon station is one of the U.K.’s busiest non-terminal train stations. Additionally, the large town has a West and South Croydon station but is absent of a North Croydon. There is an express train to Gatwick airport; just one replacement of the now defunct Croydon international airport, which was also the U.K.’s first. It introduced a control tower along with air-traffic control to the world after the first world war.
Neighbouring the station is the iconic 50p building, or as it is properly known, number One Croydon. Completed in 1970, it has 27 multi angular storeys stacked up to a height of 269 feet.
Saffron Square tower is currently Croydon's tallest building at 440 feet and recently won a unique architectural prize for the ugliest building in the UK. A new skyscraper is set to be built at nearly 800 feet. This will exceed the height of One Canada Square in Canary Wharf to become the U.K.’s second tallest building behind The Shard and the highest residential block.
The Fairfield halls arts, entertainment and conference centre opened in 1962. It has hosted The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Queen, Pink Floyd and was a setting in the Da Vinci Code film.
Aside from the modern development, Croydon preserves several older structures like the Croydon minster, Addington Palace to the south and Croydon Palace; traditionally the summer residence of the arch bishop of Canterbury for over 500 years.
