WANDERING AROUND IRELAND - Dublin, Malahide, Howth, Wicklow Mountains
Green fields, castles, ancient celtic ruins and heather moorlands: this is what Ireland is made of. We wandered around Dublin, having the best pints of Guinness ever and we discovered the rugged wilderness of inland County Wicklow. We ventured though the east coast, taking pictures of the tiny fishing village of Howth and having a stroll in downtown Malahide.
Now get ready & enjoy the tour!

Wild Mountain Thyme
Goode Company performs Wild Mountain Thyme at the 48th Las Cruces Renaissance Faire at Young Park. Abby Green - Lead Vocal and Irish Bouzouki, Bill Harris - Marimba and Stephanie Gudeman - Alto Vocal and Soprano Renaissance Recorder. Wild Mountain Thyme is an early melody, the oldest reference to it I can find at the moment is as early 1700's as a dance tune, but it could be a bit earlier. There are Irish, American and Scottish versions of the lyrics (maybe more) which most likely were written after the dance tune. These various versions can make this well known tune tricky to sing with others, but lovely none-the-less.

“Go Lassie Go” is a song that I first heard as a young boy. It was Tommy Maken (an Irish traditional folk singer) whom I first heard singing this powerful ballad. Some of my favorite musicians have covered this song from James Taylor to Bob Dylan. Here is my take on this beautiful Scottish ballad.

Wild Mountain Thyme
Wild Mountain Thyme is an Celtic folk song based on The Braes of Balquhidder written by Robbert Tannahill (1774-1810). Francis McPeake of Northern Ireland made an arrangement of Wild Mountain Thyme and was the first to record this song in 1957, a good year, Ha!
My daughter spent her senior year of undergrad at Trinity College in Dublin and it gave me and my darling wife a good reason to visit Ireland. We had a chance to get out into the country and many of the pictures used in this slide show are from that trip. The rest of the pictures are from our garden, except for the heather and the bower, which I lifted off the web.
I learned this song as a member of the Cambridge/Boston Revels. There is a tradition to end the spring and summer Revels shows with this song. This is kind of a goofy arrangement, but; I had a lot of fun putting it together and I hope you like it.
The Wild Mountain Thyme
O, the summer time is coming
and the trees are sweetly blooming
and the wild mountain thyme
grows around the purple heather
will you go, lassie go?
(chorus)
and we'll all go together
to pull wild mountain thyme
all around the blooming heather
will you go, lassie go?
I will build my love a bower
by yon clear crystal fountain
and on it I will pile
all the flowers of the mountain
will you go, lassie go?
(chorus)
If my true love she were gone,
I would surely find another
to pull wild mountain thyme
all around the purple heather
will you go, lassie go?
(chorus)
Wild Moutain Thyme - Emmet Cahill Unplugged at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall
Ireland’s most exciting young tenor Emmet Cahill sings Wild Mountain Thyme with guitar, solo and unplugged in the acoustically world famous Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy, N.Y.
Best-known for his work as lead singer of Celtic Thunder, a world-touring Irish singing group and stage show, Cahill will be touring nationwide in the United States this spring to debut his solo album, Emmet Cahill's Ireland (order here:
On Feb. 1, 2017, the Dublin native performed three classic songs for the Troy Cultural Alliance: “The Parting Glass,” (a cappella), “Wild Mountain Thyme,” (with guitar) and “Danny Boy” (on piano). Cahill took the stage solo and “unplugged,” without any amplification, before just a handful of friends.
In these beautiful renditions, captured with only a simple Olympus LS10 recorder, one can feel the singer's sound dance through and fill this landmark space.

Skyline Sessions: Emmet Cahill - Will Ye Go, Lassie Go? (or Wild Mountain Thyme)
Emmet Cahill, Irish tenor singer and former member of the group Celtic Thunder, visited Houston Public Media's Geary Studio to record a couple songs while in Houston for an August concert. With Seamus Brett on piano, Cahill performed the Academy Award-winning song Moon River, by Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer, famously featured in the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's; and the Scottish folk song Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?, by Francis McPeake, another song (like Moon River) that has been covered prolifically by many artists over the years.
