Wild river rafting and swimming with Piranha in San Jose, Costa Rica
For the first time on our show, you - our Peeta Pilots - hand-picked three of our twelve destinations in a viewers choice competition and we couldn't have been more excited to pack our bags for San José, the capital city of Costa Rica.
Nestled in the Central Valley between rolling green hills and brimming rivers, it's no wonder that San José has long been a magnet for bohemians, adventurers, and wayfarers.
But the lure of this city - and of the country in general - runs much deeper than just its striking location. Locals here live by a philosophy they call Pura Vida. An eternal optimism. A celebration of life. A gratitude for the little things that bring us happiness.
Is it a coincidence that Costa Rica is listed as one of the happiest places on earth? For a country that decided to replace its army of soldiers for teachers and their guns and barracks for textbooks and classrooms, we think not.
San José - or Chepe - is certainly riding a wave very different from any other city we've seen. And the Chepeños we met were not going to let us leave without showing us just how they go about crafting their own happiness.
Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Costa Rica Motorcycle Adventure 2015
GoPro footage of my trip to Costa Rica. Rented a motorcycle from WildRider in San Jose (highly recommended) and rode for 7 days around the country. I wish I had more time because I feel like a barely scratched the surface. But from what I saw, Costa Rica is a fantastic destination and I highly recommend going to visit.
Costa Rica Dual Sport Adventure Ride
A few of us from Indiana rented bikes (Suzuki DR650 and 2 Honda Falcon's) from Wild Rider in San Jose, Costa Rica. We then went north to Arenal volcano and then around to the West and down to Mal Pais and Santa Teresa. On our return to San Jose we took the ferry across the Pacific between the Nicoya Peninsula and the mainland of Costa Rica.
It was an incredible trip. We met nice people and had great weather and scenery. If you are looking for a fun motorycycle adventure trip I'd recommend giving Torsten a call at Wild Rider.

3 in 1 Rainforest Tour - Costa Rica
What a day!
While staying at Selina San Jose, I am going adventuring through some tour partnerships they have. For the life of me, I can't remember the tour name, so if anyone watching this knows the answer, please chime in through the comments!
This is just a snippet of what I saw, compiled by the handy Google Assistant.
To give you a better idea of what you're seeing....
We drove to the Sarapiquí area, through the rainforest of Braulio Carrillo National Park. Our guide gave us the most extraordinary details on the area - he was truly knowledgeable about everything we saw!
When we got to Sarapiqui, we hopped on a boat for a glorious, casual ride down the river. There was so much wildlife!
Howler monkeys, a crocodile, so many amazing birds, the teeny tiniest bats you ever did see...it was incredible :-)
After the boat ride, we walked through Selva Verde Eco Lodge’s private trails which are a heaven for nature enthusiasts. Our guide showed off even more incredible knowledge, identifying all sorts of lizards - basalisks! - bugs and, his specialty, all the trees and beautiful flora of the area. We also had a delicious lunch here.
On our way back towards San Jose, we stopped at the famous Rainforest Aerial Tram for a gondola ride through the tree canopy with a brilliant and super friendly naturalist guide. I spotted a wild boar and a collection of large spiders, though I didn't see any of the Tapirs the reserve is famous for.
We also got to see a collection of snakes, frogs, butterflies and the most beautiful orchids you ever did see.
According to the tour information, The Rain Forest Aerial Tram – Atlantic is a 475-hectares (1,200-acre) private reserve that shares a 10 km border with Braulio Carrillo National Park, constituting a buffer zone between the park and farming lands.
Nica Sail & Surf Catamaran Ride San Juan del Sur Nicaragua
Nica Sail & Surf is a company that offers wonderful tours on a beautiful catamaran called Must Be Crazy in San Juan del Sur Nicaragua on the Pacific! Beautiful San Juan del Sur, a very touristed town by foreigners and nationals alike is a must see if you are in Nicaragua or travelling through Costa Rica. This tour was 1/2 day excursion, we stopped for some beach and swim fun at Playa Blanca (white beach) and then returned at Sunset. The crew was fantastic, the food and drinks were excellent, and the boat ride was so enjoyable!
Costa Rica Riding
This video cronicles some of my riding adventures through the muds, pot holes, tarmac, and fogs of a wonderfully beautiful country!
Riding a Rental bike in Costa Rica was a blast and I got to do many firsts on this trip...
My first moto rental in another country
My first river crossing
My first 2 hour ride freezing in a downpour
non-bike first events in this trip also included
grinding cocoa to chocolate
petting a sloth
seeing first lion fish in the wild while snorkeling in Cahuita National park
Scuba dive with white tip reef sharks
...
it was a trip filled with adventure and the rental and riding solo with just a map through Costa Rica added to it all. The zip lining, white water rafting, hiking through rainforest, humanitarian work with the BriBri tribe...all in all it was a hell of an adventure!
Costa Rica Day 7: Tortuguero arrival (Evergreen Lodge)
After a 4 hour bus ride and a 45-minute boat ride up the river, we finally made it to Tortuguero National Park!

I’m ending the bike tour and moving to Costa Rica...SURPRISE
In 10 days marks two years living and traveling on my bicycle starting from Alaska and making my way south here to Costa Rica. I’ve ridden through 9 countries, 7 with Maggie @veganheeler, and it’s been around 15,000 miles (I’ll do an official updated count soon)....BUT surprise...I’m shutting down the bike tour. The intention has always been to 1) bike from Alaska to Argentina. 2) look for a place to build my future homestead farm/ yoga retreat center. 3) have fun seeing the world and it’s people. The past 6 months has felt different than the first 18. The loneliness, lugging around a heavy ass bike, constant daily scary dog attacks, and finding and sleeping in weird wet places have all worn me down. The obstacles are great to grow stronger, until they aren’t anymore and they become old and monotonous. The past 6 months has been less me living in the present moment and more day dreaming about my next chapter in life building a farm and finally being able to have relationships instead of living as a nomad alone. That’s what fuels my current passion. I decided a few months ago I’d bike fast for the next 7 months and fly through my next 6 countries to finish up quick! A few days ago when I arrived to the high mountains of San Isidro Costa Rica it hit me harder than ANY place I’ve been all trip that HERE is where I will call home and build my life. It felt so amazing...and that knowing allowed me to reflect on how DUMB it would be to “rush” all of SA because I’m kinda sick of living on a bicycle alone, just to say I did it. I don’t live to say I did stuff, I live and travel to have the best experiences, enjoy life and learn. Thus, after much reflection, it became abundantly clear that I needed to surrender my ego and expectations and live in the now and the heart. So I’ve decided to do that, and my plans have evolved. Here’s what happening. I’m flying home with Maggie to Los Angeles in 2 weeks where I’ll visit friends and fam for a month before returning here in October...permanently. I’ll start building my epic vision and hopefully start a family sometime. I’ll finish biking to Argentina once I have a wife and kids and we’ll do it together in 5 or 10 years so I don’t have to do it alone. I’ll enjoy it more that way. Get excited for this journey my friends it’s going to be a wild ride. I’m very very grateful and happy about this.
Tortuga Island (Day tripping) Costa Rica
This dreamy island paradise fringed with tall swaying coconut palms, sugary white sand beaches and emerald waters invites absolute tranquility and luxury. There are numerous tour operators that will whisk you by boat to Tortuga Island most commonly departing from Jaco or Puntarenas and is about a 90 minute ride with plenty of amazing scenic views.
Once you’ve arrived spend the glorious day swimming, playing volleyball, hiking the forested hills, or simply sun bathing in the warmth of the sun and beauty of the area. For those seeking adventure take part in the canopy tour and zip line that will fly you through the tree tops giving you a birds eye view of the forest. For some aquatic fun get on a water bike, kayak the coast line or venture out on a glass bottom boat.
A huge attraction to this exotic island is its outstanding scuba diving sites and excellent snorkeling opportunities to view marine life such as sting rays, angel fish, sharks, Spinner dolphins and octopus. Unique and exclusive to the vecinity and all of Central America is the dive site with three sunken boats and diving outfitters that will take you there up close and personal. It’s easy to make this destination an unforgettable part of your Costa Rican adventure.
