BILL BAGGS CAPE FLORIDA STATE PARK| KEY BISCAYNE FL
In this video I take you on a short walking and biking trip around the historical Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. In conducting some research on this park I was truly amazed at some of the events that took place during the 19th century. (FYI) William Calhoun Baggs was an American journalist and editor of The Miami News (1957 to 1969). He was one of a small group of Southern newspaper editors who campaigned for civil rights for African Americans in the 1950s and 1960s. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Beach is located on the tip of Key Biscayne. It is home to an historic lighthouse, the oldest standing building in Miami-Dade County, which offers scheduled tours Thursday-Monday 10am and 1pm.
The beach offers plenty of activities such as walking and bicycle trails winding through native vegetation. Amenities include restrooms, picnic tables, food concessions and shower facilities. Fishing enthusiasts can fish from the seawall along Biscayne Bay. If you are visiting Miami I would highly recommend taking a short trip over to Key Biscayne and check out the Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. I hope you enjoy the video. Of course, as in any coastal Florida city, the beaches are preternaturally beautiful here. But don't neglect the other aspects of nature or things to do, which include preserves, swamps and state parks where you can canoe, kayak or stroll on undeveloped beaches such as Barefoot Preserve Park and visit with tropical animals at the Naples Zoo. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a must for bird and wildlife lovers.

Sights and Sounds of Keewaydin Island, Naples Bay and Port Royal.
Learn more about Naples, Florida by joining our Facebook group page at
Keewaydin Island is a primary barrier island located off the coast of Naples, in Collier County, Florida, United States. Keewaydin Island is monitored nightly for Loggerhead turtle nesting activity by The Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
Keeywadin's Public Beach
The Keewaydin Island shoreline has been mapped annually since 1997 in an effort to document shoreline change. The shoreline is also mapped after significant storm events. Mapping is done by collecting Global Positioning System locations along the dune-line and then downloaded using Geographic information system software.
Keewaydin Island was once a part of the Keewaydin Camps Ltd. corporation. Originally, the island was named Key Island, and once the Keewaydin Camps had a presence here, it became known as Keewaydin Island. The island is currently about 85% public property and 15% private. Approximately 50 private lots and 15 private homes dot the island, mostly on the south side of the island.
Keewaydin Island is a unique barrier island in Florida that has no cars, roads, or bridges. It had a history of being the next developable barrier island, after Marco Island to the south was developed in the 50's and 60's and onward. During the late 50's and early 60's when the government was planning a road and bridge out to the island, 1,000 local residents signed a petition to stop the road and any future commercial development. They wanted to avoid the pattern on barrier islands at the time, such as Fort Myers Beach, where local residents were 85% against dense development, but zoning laws and large property owners held sway. In fact, high density high rise structures line the shores on most barrier islands in Florida, except notable places like Keewaydin, where the environmentalist movement finally got enough momentum to stop the bridge to the island. So locals and visitors can relish the experience of a visit to a pristine barrier island and its ecosystem. Wildlife abounds and the island protects one of the largest and most important reserves called Rookery Bay.
Most commonly known for the south tip of the island, where local boaters congregate at the end of the 8 mile long isthmus, where they can park their boat on the shore and enjoy people watching and the beach and scenery. Since you can't drive to the Island, you will have to rent a boat, go on a tourist boat, visit with a private individual who has a boat, or call the Keewaydin Express water taxi service.
