Wolves v Arsenal, 20th November 1971
In tribute to Wolves legend Dave Wagstaffe, who sadly passed away on 6th August 2013 aged 70, are the full highlights of the First Division match between Wolves and Arsenal at a wintry Molineux, 20th November 1971.
Originally broadcast in colour on BBC Match of the Day, with commentary provided by Barry Davies, the uploaded footage is of Sky TV's Bobby Charlton's Football Scrapbook, presented by Dickie Davies with contributions from Bobby Charlton and studio guest Kenny Hibbitt. The former Wolves midfielder begins the programme by mentioning that, before every match, Dave Wagstaffe disappeared into the solitude of the dressing room toilets to smoke a cigarette in order to settle his pre-match nerves!
The match itself was both testament to the formidable attacking prowess of Wolves and the brilliance of Wagstaffe who, in a stunning second-half performance from manager Bill McGarry's team, played a prominent role with a superb crossfield pass to help set up Wolves' second goal (15:47), preceded by an equally superb long-range goal from 'Waggy' himself (12:28) - a strike that he considered as the favourite of his 32 league and cup goals scored for Wolves.
Wolves were considered to be one of the finest teams in the First Division during the early-mid 1970s, with two top five finishes in the league during that period offering proof of their capabilities. The 1971-72 season saw a memorable UEFA Cup run from Wolves that ended with a narrow defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the final. There was further disappointment for Wolves the following season, with FA Cup and League Cup semi-final defeats against Leeds United and Tottenham Hotspur respectively. Victory in the finals of the Texaco Cup in 1971 and League Cup in 1974 provided a measure of success for Wolves but it was arguably scant reward for such an excellent team.
According to former Leeds United manager Don Revie Wolves possessed the ability to swamp opponents like a tidal wave and this was perfectly evident at Molineux against reigning league champions Arsenal. Their natural attacking flair was led by the formidable strike partnership of Derek Dougan and John Richards and supported by a richly talented Wolves midfield of Mike Bailey, Kenny Hibbitt, Jim McCalliog and, of course, Dave Wagstaffe.
Also remembered with great fondness and respect by Wolves fans, are two teammates of Waggy's who were equally integral to the success of the Wolves team of that period and who've sadly passed away in recent years; the charismatic 'Doog' and cultured centre-half Frank Munro.
Approximate time of goals on YouTube footage:
07:36 Wolves 0 Arsenal 1 (Ray Kennedy)
12:28 Wolves 1 Arsenal 1 (Dave Wagstaffe)
15:47 Wolves 2 Arsenal 1 (Kenny Hibbitt)
17:20 Wolves 3 Arsenal 1 (Derek Dougan)
21:34 Wolves 4 Arsenal 1 (Jim McCalliog - Penalty)
25:16 Wolves 5 Arsenal 1 (Derek Dougan)

Guide to Wrexham | Visiting the Largest Town in North Wales
Guide to Wrexham - Visiting the Largest Town in North Wales - My good friend Gaz is celebrating his birthday today so I made him a birthday video message. He has featured on two LOCH videos, Turner and Hooch and Royal Rumble 93, Links below. But even if you don't know Gaz you can still watch and may get some enjoyment out of learning all about Welsh people. :)
Wrexham (/ˈrɛksəm/ REKS-əm; Welsh: Wrecsam; Welsh pronunciation: [ˈwrɛksam]) is a large town in north Wales, between the Welsh mountains and the lower Dee Valley alongside the border with England. In Wrexham County Borough, it is the largest town in north Wales and an administrative, commercial, retail and educational centre. At the 2011 Census, Wrexham had a population of 61,603, the fourth largest urban area in Wales.
By 1913, the North East Wales coal field was producing up to three million tonnes a year and employed over ten thousand people, dominating the economic and cultural life of the area. However the industry went into decline after the First World War, and of the seven large-scale collieries operating in the Wrexham area in 1946, only two functional collieries remained by 1968. The last pit to close in the Borough was Bersham Colliery in 1986. One of the worst mining disasters in British history occurred at Gresford Colliery in 1934 when underground explosions and a subsequent fire cost the lives of 266 men.
The leatherworks in Pentrefelin and Tuttle Street, the many coal mines in the area, the brickworks in Abenbury, Brymbo Steelworks and the breweries all closed in the latter half of the 20th century. Wrexham suffered from the same problems as much of industrialised Britain and saw little investment in the 1970s.
In the 1980s and 1990s, the Welsh Development Agency (WDA) funded a major dual carriageway[citation needed] (the A483) bypassing Wrexham town centre and connecting it with nearby Chester and with England's trunk road network. New shopping areas have been created within the town at Henblas Square, Island Green and Eagles Meadow and the Wrexham Industrial Estate, previously used in the Second World War, has become home to many manufacturing businesses.
Wrexham A.F.C.
Wrexham Association Football Club (Welsh: Clwb Pêl-droed Wrecsam) is a professional association football club based in Wrexham, Wales. Based on the club's recorded formation date of 1864, they are the oldest club in Wales and the third oldest professional football team in the world. Since August 2011 Wrexham have been a supporter-owned football club. As of May 2015, the club has 4,129 adult members and joint owners.
The club will spend their ninth season in the National League in 2016–17, the fifth tier of English football – the lowest level of competition that they have played in, since they were first elected to the football league in 1921- following their relegation from Football League Two at the end of the 2007–08 season, after 87 years of consecutive membership of The Football League. Wrexham are perhaps most notable for an FA Cup upset over reigning English Champions Arsenal in 1992 and a 1–0 victory over FC Porto in 1984 in the European Cup Winners' Cup. Wrexham were eligible for the Cup Winners' Cup due to winning the Welsh Cup, their first European tie was against FC Zürich of Switzerland in 1972 and their final European fixture was played in Romania against Petrolul Ploiești in 1995.
Wrexham's honours include winning the Third Division title in 1977-78, the Welsh Cup a record 23 times, the Football League Trophy in 2005 at the Millennium Stadium and the FA Trophy in 2013 at Wembley Stadium. Wrexham are also record winners of the short-lived FAW Premier Cup, winning it five times out of the 11 years of its tenure, participating against fellow Welsh clubs such as; Cardiff City, Swansea City and Newport County.
Wrexham's home stadium, the Racecourse Ground, is the world's oldest international stadium that still continues to host international games. The record attendance at the ground was set in 1957, when Wrexham hosted a match against Manchester United in front of 36,445 spectators.
