Salisbury Camping and Caravanning Club Site
Pitch up at our Salisbury Club campsite and you’re ideally situated to visit some of Wiltshire’s best known attractions.
Described as the city in the countryside, Salisbury is just a mile-and-a half riverside walk away. Justly famous for its cathedral, home to the famous Magna Carta, and its Close, this bustling market town also boasts attractive timbered buildings, a thriving market, museums and some of England’s finest historic houses.
Our campsite, at Hudson’s Fields great for kite-flying and walking – enjoys fantastic views over the hill fort of Old Sarum, which includes the remains of a pre-historic fortress, a Norman palace, a castle and a cathedral. The 150-pitch site is sloping and is split into two fields divided by hedging. It’s spacious and well laid out with good on site facilities and enjoys a truly rural feel.
The area is also well-known for the ancient monument at Stonehenge. Avebury, 19 miles to the north is another less crowded prehistoric site. Old Wardour Castle is also worth a visit.
Take a tour of Wilton House west of Salisbury, set in eight hectares of grounds, and the nearby Wilton Carpet Factory. Longleat, Beaulieu and the National Motor Museum and popular theme park Paultons are a great family days out from the campsite.
Local Tourist Attractions in Southern England presented by Sarah Kennedy, for British Gas - 1980s
Archive footage from the 1980s when Sarah Kennedy presented a short guide to local attractions in Southern England.
For more than ten years during the 1970s and 1980s Focus regularly produced video and presentation support material for British Gas Southern, a region of British Gas which disappeared when the organisation was privatised in 1986. Our clients were in the region’s PR and Marketing departments.
During that period in the early 1980s the Institution of Gas Engineers ran their annual national conference at the Bournemouth International Centre, and the Southern Region of British Gas hosted delegates from across the country together with their spouses.
This video was produced for Ladies Day to give them some background to each of the trips available. It was delightfully presented by Sarah Kennedy, the cameraman was Steve Hudson, and it was directed by Ian Ward.
Locations to choose from were:
Southampton Ocean Village
Southampton Hall of Aviation
Stourhead
Wilton House
Wilton Carpet Factory
Brights of Nettlebed at Wimborne
Kingston Lacy
Athelhampton House
Milton Abbey
Milton Abbas Village
Moreton Church
Arreton Manor, Isle of Wight
Osborne House, Isle of Wight
Broadlands, Romsey
Ford, Transit Van Factory, Southampton
Winchester Cathedral
New Forest Centre, Lyndhurst, (the New Forest Embroidery)
Gibbs Brewery, Salisbury
Salisbury Cathedral
Winfrith Laboratories
Portsmouth Dockyard – Mary Rose and HMS Warrior
Although the images and stories are twenty years old, the list still makes a great tourist guide to central southern England.
