Winding Waters Natural Area
Winding Waters Natural Area
On February 15th 2018 we took a group of my students out to this amazing natural area to pick up trash and check out the progress of this reclaimed piece of Florida. It is over 500 acres of mixed habitats along with an excellent hiking trail and kayak loop. I highly recommend checking it out!

naturescope: Winding Waters, the making of a natural area
Join naturescope host Steve Bass on this fascinating and unique look at the making of a natural area in Palm Beach County. Winding Waters Natural Area was constructed from an old cow pasture that was slated for residential development and faced some unique challenges during the construction phase.
The natural area contains six native Florida ecosystems: mesic flatwoods, wet flatwoods, hydric hammock, depression marsh, wet prairie, and dome swamp. It was acquired by Palm Beach County in 2001.
Approximately 235 acres of agriculturally-altered land are being restored to shallow-water and deep-water marshes through removal of invasive nonnative vegetation, removal of canals, installation of three water control structures, and extensive excavation.
Native vegetation has been retained in five small islands within the excavated area to provide future rookery habitat, and a sandy/gravelly nesting island was created for terns. A moat was excavated around the islands to protect any nesting birds, and flats and a shallow pond were created as foraging areas for wildlife.
Nearly 1,650 native trees were removed from the areas being excavated and relocated on the upland portions of the site and another 500 were relocated to the site as part of a road widening project. There will be a 3.4-mile canoe/kayak trail when the site work is completed. It is part of the Northeast Everglades Natural Area.

Hungryland Boardwalk and Trail
The Hungryland Boardwalk and Trail is located far from the hunting area and is open year-round. Hiking along the 1.2-mile trail is most pleasant in the fall, winter, and spring. In the spring and fall, oak hammocks and cypress swamps along the trail are alive with songs of migratory warblers.

Winding Waters Natural Area. The fish don't like me.
Today I'm at Winding Waters Natural Area in Northern Palm Beach County, Florida. The whole area is over 500 acres of man-made natural habitat with a 165 acre wetland area in the middle. This area has a 3.4 mile kayak trail through it. It is pretty shallow and fish are spawning everywhere.

Beach Access - John D. MacArthur State Park, North Palm Beach, FL
Like all state parks, you pay a modest vehicle fee to enter. But it’s worth the cost. And as entrances go, this is grand. Past the parking lot, you encounter a fine, weathered sculpture of John D. himself, as well as a small, but interesting, nature center and gift shop. But the fun begins with a nearly mile-long boardwalk that crosses shallow Lake Worth Cove. Always something interesting to see here — from kayakers and student tours to teeming schools of fish and seabirds. Beyond the cove, a long, winding boardwalk takes you to an endless ribbon of beach, which seems miles away from civilization. Bonus: a beautiful grassy dune, the closest you’ll get to a seaside cliff in South Florida.

Grassy Waters Preserve | West Palm Beach, FL
Grassy Waters Preserve is our favorite nature park in Palm Beach County. There’s no general admission fee and the 23-square-mile park has much to offer. That includes drinking water for locals. The preserve’s fresh water supply provides for West Palm Beach and its surrounding communities.
If you want to experience the beauty of the everglades without heading further south, this park is for you. There are six main public trails with different levels of nature interaction. The Cypress Boardwalk weaving through the core area of the park is family-friendly. We love leisurely cruising the boardwalk with tall cypress and pine trees above as we look below for evidence of animal activity among the short palms and other native foliage. A wonderful surprise along the way are pairs of rocking chairs perfectly situated under small chickee huts, providing a shady reprieve from the Florida sun and calming views of forest or water.
Take in open vistas of sawgrass prairie and domed shaped oak hammocks. Keep your eyes peeled for swimming alligators. Wading through the sawgrass marsh you might see sandhill cranes or egrets while snail kites stalk their prey from above. I always get excited when we make it to the point in the boardwalk where the rails drop down completely. It’s the perfect way for everyone, especially those in a stroller or wheelchair, to become immersed in the ecosystem.
Paid activities to enhance your experience include sunset canoeing, kayak tours, dipnetting in the marsh for critters, a variety of guided hikes (including through the swamp itself) and airboat rides. And no visit is complete without stopping in the Nature Center to learn about 5,000 years of Native American history in the everglades. The exhibition spotlights the people of Pahayokee, this incredible park’s namesake.
