The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve is comprised of four islands off Newfoundland's extreme eastern coast. The sheer cliffs and rocky outcrops of the tiny islands make them ideal landing and nesting sites for two million seabirds. The Witless Bay islands are the summer home of the largest Atlantic Puffin colony in North America, and the second-largest colony of Leach’s Storm Petrels in the world

We spent half a day in Witless Bay, NL.
We started the morning with breakfast at Irish Loop Coffee house. The food was great, and the bread pudding was tremendous.
We quickly explored the coast and trail starting at whale watch beach, before we went out on the water to find some whales with Ecotours Zodiac Adventures.
To our surprise, there was a baby beluga near the dock when we left.
Our guide was great and the coast line even better. We quickly found two humpback whales (a mother and calf) slowly moving out of Witless Bay.
We then went to Gull Island one of the islands apart of the Witless Bay Islands Park Reserve. The number of birds was surreal. From Puffins to Eagles, I have never been around so many birds at one time.
Once back on land we hiked Mickeleens Path, which we highly recommend. The coastline and views were spectacular. Make sure you don't get too close to the edge, as it's a long (rocky) way down.
We definitely recommend checking out Witless Bay for a half-day trip if you are staying in St. John's.

Puffins on the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, Newfoundland
While in Newfoundland I took a whale and bird tour out of Bay Bulls with O'Brien's Boat Tours and we went by the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve where there were tons of puffins hanging out on the rocks.

How Puffins Have Divided This Canadian Town
Off the coast of the picturesque town of Witless Bay in Newfoundland sits a four-island ecological reserve home to over 600,000 pairs of puffins. The locals love these seabirds—so much so that they run a Puffin Patrol to protect lost chicks who get stranded on shore. However, not everyone in town agrees on how to keep the puffins safe. The disagreement has spurred on a community-wide conflict that has pit neighbor against neighbor—with the puffins at the center of it all.
