Birds & More: South African Safari
A great trip through a fascinating first/third world country. Great infrastructure, scenery and terrific wildlife and birds. This trip included the most impressive Drakensburg Mountains over Sani Pass to independent Lesotho, the Karoo Desert north and east of Capetown with the best wildflowers in years, and a pelagic trip into the Southern Ocean past the Cape of Good Hope; 8/2006
Pelagic Birding - Cape Town, South Africa
Birding Ecotours offer a variety of pelagic birding trips around the world, but our pelagic trips off the west coast of South Africa (leaving from harbours around Cape Town) are by far the most popular and often most productive. As with all birding it's all about being in the right place at the right time and our aim on these pelagics are to find fishing trawlers that attract often thousands of pelagic birds, often allowing us to find over 15 pelagic species. It's quite a spectacle when we do manage to find a fishing trawler and we usually end up having a good couple of hours of fun.
On this particular day we spent time between 2x fishing trawlers! It truly was a spectacular day.
Have a look at our website for more info on these pelagic birding trips:

Squirrel Monkeys in Monkey Jungle - World of Birds, Cape Town
While I was in South Africa for dads film shoot Conquer The Cape I visited World of Birds in Cape Town, South Africa.
In the park there is a large walk through enclosure called Monkey Jungle where there are 38 Squirrel Monkeys freely running around that can have direct contact with us. They are fast, agile and cheeky.
Quick Facts
* Their natural habitat is thickets, mangrove swamps and the lower layers and edges of tall forests in South America.
* They feed mostly on fruit and insects, relying on their inquisitiveness and speed to catch the insects.
* Squirrel monkey fur is short and close, colored olive at the shoulders and yellowish orange on its back and extremities. Their throat and the ears are white and their mouths are black.
* Squirrel monkeys grow to 25 to 35 cm, plus a 35 to 42 cm tail.
* Male squirrel monkeys weigh 750 to 1100 g. Females weigh 500 to 750 g.
* Young infants ride on their mothers' backs for the first month of life, then begin venturing off to explore and play for increasing periods each day.
* They live to about 15 years old in the wild, about 20 years in captivity.
* Baker, an 'astronaut' squirrel monkey, rode into space as part of the United States space program, and returned safely.
