The Battle of the Somme started on the 1st July 1916 at 7.30am and ended on the 18th November 1916. On the first day alone the British had 57,470 casualties

Canadian Memorial Ceremony in Worthing
The Canadian Memorial Ceremony was held on Sunday August 18th 2013 at Grand Avenue Promenade, Worthing, Sussex, Great Britain. A Canadian Flag and a Monument will be in place to celebrate the Comradeship & Loyalty shown by the Canadian Armed Forces in Worthing when they helped to defend the South Coast of Great Britain during the conflict of WW1 & WW2.
Those in attendance were :-
Organisers Chris Vowles & Pam Wilson of Canadian Roots UK, Pauline Barton who donated the Canadian Flag, 1940s Music performed by The Worthing Silver Band, Lieutenant Colonel Jean Trudel military attache to the Canadian High Commission, The Mayor [Bob Smytherman] & Mayoress of Worthing, The Royal Winnipeg Rifles [Living History Group], Members of the Canadian Veterans Association, The Chair of Adur District Council and The Reverend David S Farrant Chaplain to the Combined Ex-Services Association [CESA] & Tim Loughton MP.
Mr Peter Teichman performed a flyby in his Curtiss P-40 Kittyhawk which drew great applause from the 300 strong crowd.
People from as far as Canada, Spain and the far corners of Great Britain thoroughly enjoyed the well organised Ceremony.
Congratulations therefore should go to Chris Vowles & Pam Wilson for a well organised and fitting tribute to our Allies from Canada which should put credence to the phrase

WWI Centenary: Thank You
Worthing Museum & Art Gallery will be marking the centenary of the end of World War I with mixed displays and a talk on Worthing during the war. Our displays will look at the training of soldiers at Shoreham Army Camp, the fighting conducted by the Royal Sussex Regiment, and of course the Home Front and the effects of the war on the people of Worthing. We will also have a talk, “Home Front & Front Line”, which will include extracts from diaries in our collection.

Scottish Soldiers Memorial
This is a service in memory of 3 young Scottish Soldiers murdered by Sinn Fein IRA in 10,3,1971.They were Brothers John & Joseph McCaig 17 yrs & 18 yrs old & comrade Fusilier Dougald McCaughey 23 yrs old.

Royal Sussex Regiment Memorial Service Richebourg France
On the 25th June 2011 the Royal Sussex Regiment who fought at the Battle of Boar's Head were remembered at Richebourg France. Those who died in action or of their wounds during the battle in WW1 were so great that following the battle it was said that this was the day that Sussex Died.
