Shipwreck at Big Brook (19JUL2011)
The wreck of the Empire Energy lies on the shores of Newfoundland near the evacuated community of Big Brook. Word has it that this boat with her load of corn was intentionally run aground on 05NOV1941 after being damaged by a German U-Boat during WW2.
Big Brook, a remote community, was evacuated as of October 15, 2004. The road in has not been maintained and was a fairly rough ride in my little car.
On our tour of the northern part of the island I met Norman Young in Griget, a local fisherman who began carving in the off-season in 1969. I purchased one of his more modest soapstone carvings to add to my collection. If you can afford one of his whale bone carvings, they are completely amazing and worth every cent.

The overnight ferry ride back to the mainland was enhanced by a very foggy morning.

Newfoundland
Newfoundland and Labrador form the most easterly province of Canada. On Newfoundland island, the Norse archaeological site L'Anse aux Meadows is the reputed settlement of Viking explorer Leif Erikson. Gros Morne National Park, on the Gulf of St Lawrence, has cliffs, waterfalls and glacial fjords. Southeastern capital city St. John’s is known for the 17th-century Signal Hill citadel, with a hillside walking trail.
