Yaletown is an area of Downtown Vancouver approximately bordered by False Creek and by Robson and Homer Streets. Formerly a heavy industrial area dominated by warehouses and rail yards, since Expo 86 (the 1986 World's Fair) it has been transformed into one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in the city. The marinas, parks, high-rise apartment blocks, and converted heritage buildings constitute one of the most significant urban regeneration projects in North America.
From the start, the city planners imposed strict guidelines on the development, in particular requiring a substantial amount of development of the public realm, and sensitive preservation of existing heritage stock. In part, the city's adaption of new zoning plans in the Central Area Plan (1991) also aided in the process of rejuvenation by establishing objectives of improving livability and provision for office space within Yaletown, as well as preserving its heritage structures. Thus there are generous areas set aside for parks, waterfront access, community centres, and schools. Along the shore of False Creek, the Stanley Park Seawall linear park has been continued through the area, forming its southern boundary.
While little or no original housing from the 19th century survives, several older buildings from the industrial days still exist. Hamilton Street and Mainland Street are the most significant, comprising two intact streetscapes from that era. They are lined with handsome brick warehouses built on rail platforms, many with cantilevered canopies. These have been converted into loft style apartments and offices, with boutique stores, bars and restaurants at the ground level. During the latter years of the dot com boom, these streets housed Vancouver's multimedia gulch similar to the SOMA area of San Francisco.
The view from Yaletown, overlooking False Creek towards Vancouver City Hall.
Nearby, at the junction of Davie Street and Pacific Boulevard, an old brick Canadian Pacific roundhouse has been converted into the Roundhouse Community Centre which uses the old engine turntable as a small outdoor amphitheatre. In another tribute to the rail history of the area, it also houses Engine No. 374, which pulled the first passenger train into Vancouver in 1887.
Spilling around the central core of Hamilton and Mainland Streets, most other architecture in Yaletown is newly built on the old derelict yards, the vast majority in a uniform glass and concrete high-rise style. Most of these buildings are apartment blocks.

Vancouver STREET END-TO-END WALK: DAVIE STREET From Yaletown Dock to English Bay to Catch the Sunset
A long but pleasant end-to-end walk along Davie Street from False Creek at the Yaletown Dock, heading west to Beach Avenue and English Bay to watch the performers and enjoy the sunset.
From
Davie Village
Overview
Rainbow flags and sunburst banners adorn the lampposts in this lively neighbourhood in the heart of downtown's dense West End. Known internationally for its thriving community of gay and lesbian residents, Davie Village is offers a chilled-out vibe for people watching during the day, and thumping clubs, pubs and street life at night. “Davie Village” refers to the stretch of Davie Street between Burrard and Jervis Streets, but make sure you poke your head around the corner onto some of the side streets which are also home to some gems.
Seeing and Doing
It’s not just the characters that are colourful around here. The intersection of Davie and Bute is home to the much-photographed Rainbow Crosswalk, which made its debut during Vancouver’s Pride celebrations but has remained a year-round attraction. But Davie Village is less about “seeing the sights” and more about “living the lifestyle.” So grab a coffee and stroll – start at the busy, Burrard Street end, and head down the hill, towards the water. On your way, you’ll pass LGBT-friendly bookstores, boutiques and plenty of places to refuel.
In the evening, Davie Village comes to life as the real epicentre of Vancouver’s gay nightlife scene. What you might not expect is just how diverse that nightlife can be. Along with dance clubs hosting some of the world’s hottest DJs, you’ll also have no trouble finding LGBT-friendly sports bars, bingo games hosted by drag queens, and casual pubs with excellent craft beer selections.
Eating and Drinking
On a sunny day, there’s nothing like a Davie Village patio for brunch or a beer. Most of the restaurants in this area are real neighbourhood spots, so expect to find yourself sitting among the locals, perhaps including one or two of the community’s renowned drag queens.
You won’t find a lot of high-end restaurants in this area, but you will find a lot of range in the multicultural menus on offer, from Greek to Malaysian, Persian to classic American. It’s not unusual to see line-ups for the most popular spots, but fear not, the queue will move quickly!

Yaletown Vancouver BC CANADA - Life in Downtown - Historical Trendy & Laid-back Area
We are walking in that area that's got lots of bricks.
This is the place that you want to go to if you have time to kill during an afternoon. There are lots of patios with people who have called in sick to work (either that or they're having extended lunch breaks).
If you're interested in moving close to this area, I would recommend having a salary of... $100,000 a year. You might be able to afford a one-bedroom apartment.
The music was played by Free Jazz Vancouver, a group that is always willing to be as spontaneous as ever.

Walking in Downtown Vancouver BC Canada. City Life on Granville Street.
What do you like or not like about this city?
We start this video in Pink Alley.
After a left is taken, we're on Granville Street.
This area has shopping in the morning and afternoon. During the evening, it's a popular area to frequent as it has quite a few night clubs/pubs. From Hastings Street to Smithe Street, traffic is limited to buses, emergency vehicles and taxis.

Vancouver 10 MINUTE WALK: DOWNTOWN GRANVILLE (NIGHT) Heading North from Nelson to West Georgia St
Walking back the other way along downtown Granville Street on a busy Friday night. Exciting vibe and energy!
From Tourism Vancouver tourismvancouver.com
The Granville Street strip was once believed to have the highest concentration of neon in the world behind Shanghai, and you can still see evidence of this in the dazzling way the street comes to life after dark. This area is the city’s cultural hub, whether your definition of “culture” means concertos or clubbing. The art deco Commodore Ballroom has been hosting from Dizzy Gillespie to Snoop Dogg since it opened in 1929. Catch a live act there and experience the venue’s legendary sprung dancefloor. A little further south on Granville is the Orpheum Theatre, home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra among other companies. If you’re looking to hit the dancefloor, there’s nowhere in the city like Granville Street, with its popular clubs and bars, this is the place to be, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.
