Canadian Rockies Walking Tour - Yamnuska Mountain Adventures
The Canadian Rockies surrounding Canmore and Banff contain a lifetime of walking. Eight National and Provincial Mountain Parks are within easy driving distance. The scenery is classically magnificent, steely grey limestone peaks are clothed in forests, waterfalls, craggy cliffs and, not far west of Canmore, glaciers! The forest cover of the valley floors is broken by frequent lakes and beaver ponds. Towards treeline the forest thins, alpine larches appear as forests give way to alpine meadows.
Banff Highline - Yamnuska Mountain Adventures
The Banff Highline Trail is a wonderful journey through the Canadian Rockies during which we encounter much of the diversity to be found in these beautiful mountains. Day after day we cross spectacular passes interspersed with alpine lakes. Craggy peaks constructed of multi-hued quartzite give way to the massive gun-metal grey limestone slabs typical of the Front Ranges. Different elevations feature different flowers and vegetation from the delicate moss campions of the alpine zone to the flowering shrubs and berries of the forest floor. A daily constant will be Mount Assiniboine's massive pyramid, first seen from Arnica ridge on Day 2, gradually getting closer until we reach its base three days later then to be last seen as we drive back to Canmore with more than 100 km of trail behind us.

GAP PEAK - Mountain Scramble video (HD) near Canmore. Explore Alberta Canada
Here is our trip report of #GapPeak in Canmore October 6th. Great day minus some wind. No snow whatsoever made the climb easy. Very fun ridge walk and a really cool Rock Window. When hiking up the scree slope we noticed that every kickstep we made stirred up the rock and smelled like rotten eggs. Must be some sulfur in the rock content up there. Get outside and be healthy! #thenorthface @thenorthface

Yamnuska - A classic Calgary area peak.
Elevation Gain: 900 m (2,953 ft).
A Bow Valley classic for hikers and climbers. Its sheer 500' face can be seen from the TransCanada highway just before Canmore, and the peak is often in the clouds. It gets an A for accessibility.
Officially named Mount John Laurie in 1961, it is also known as Mount Laurie, or by the Nakoda name Mount Yamnuska, or simply Yamnuska. The word Yamnuska translates to wall of stone.
Yamnuska is derived from the Stoney Nakoda word Iyamnathka that describes steep cliffs or the flat faced mountain.
There are many routes up this limestone mountain to the 2,240 m summit. Hikers can make it to the summit without special equipment. The first 3 km is through mixed forest with a wide variety of wild life and birds to see. Above the trees is a fair amount of skree and careful footing is required.
A loop can be made around the mountain and if so, do it CCW. There is a narrow ledge 30 m long that must be traversed about 300m from the summit. There is a cable to hang on to but it isn't for the faint of heart as you will see in the video. We call it The chain section.
Hiking Mount Yamnuska | Canada Travel Vlog
Hiking Mount Yamnuska has been on my travel bucket list for Alberta for a really long time. It is such a cool hike, and some of the best views of the Rockies, but also back into the Prairies.
To see my images from Canada check out my instagram at @brendanvanson.
The Yamnuska hike isn't the hardest hike in the Canadian Rockies, but it is a bit of a challenge. There's about a 900m elevation gain and the total trail length is 11km. Most people are told that it'll take 6 hours to do the entire hike. However, we did the hike in about 4 hours. And, if you're fit you should be able to do the same.
Even though the hike up Mount Yamnuska is fairly easy doesn't mean you shouldn't be prepared. There are some fairly sketchy parts of the trail.
There's the Yamnuska chain, which is actually a quick little via ferrata. It's not too terrifying, but it does take a bit of nerve.
Also, you really need to be prepared for weather on this hike. The conditions can change really quickly. There are also people that say you should take bear spray with you on the hike. And, it depends on the day. On a busy hiking day, it's probably not necessary. On a quiet day, definitely bring your bear spray.
There's also a section of skree on Yamnuska if you do the loop. You can avoid the skree by going back the same way you come up. But, I kind of had fun with the skree slide.
Hiking Mount Yamnuska was so good. It was so good to be back in the mountains, and back into my stomping grounds here in Alberta. I've been itching for some hikes like this, and it was so good.
When we hit the summit of Mount Yamnuska, we stopped for a bit of a picnic, I took some photos, and then we headed down.
My brother was excited to do some skree skiing down the scramble route of the mountain. I was just stoked to not break my arm by the end of it all.
Then, after we were done our decent down the mountain, we headed to my parent's house which is fairly nearby. I haven't seen my parents for about 8 months, so it was good to see them and it was great to raid their fridge for beer and ice cream.
For those who follow this channel for the photography, you should know that there is loads of photography coming from Alberta. I'll be shooting the mountains as well as Calgary over the next couple days. Stay tuned for those episodes of the travel vlog.
Tomorrow, the Canada travel vlog continues as I'm going to shoot sunrise at the Peace Bridge in Calgary. Stay tuned!

Hiking In Alberta - Ha Ling Peak in the Canadian Rockies - Canmore, Alberta
In this video, we show a fairly simple, although strenuous, hike up to Ha Ling Peak in the Canadian Rockies around Canmore, Alberta. It’s rated as difficult, but if you’re in decent shape, you should be fine. The views from the top are simply stunning. This hike is free and is not within the national park system so no park pass is needed.
Hiking in Alberta is one of the best things to do in Alberta. That's because it's home to the Canadian Rockies, which includes both Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. However, this hike is around Canmore, Alberta, which is just outside the national park (about 15 minutes from Banff). It's called Kananaskis country and it's somewhat of a local secret. Not this hike but the Kananaskis in general.

Scrambling Grotto Mountain - Direct Route - Canmore Alberta
Began the day with the intention of simply exploring the canyon, but decided to scramble the peak as section of the canyon seemed blocked by ice. I took the direct route as it's known which is shorter but slightly more difficult - still an easy, or easy-medium scramble (probably depending on your path finding skills - as there are more difficult sections of scree mixed in with easier sections).

Canmore Adventures: Hiking Heart Creek Trail
Heart Creek Trail is a beautiful walk through dense forest and over a rocky creek bed. Reaching the hidden waterfall deep in the canyon at the end of the trail provides an added challenge if you think you have the balance to cross the natural obstacle course of floating logs.

HIKING in the CANADIAN ROCKIES: YAMNUSKA TRAVERSE
SKIP INTRO: 0:35
Yamnuska or Mount Laurie is one of the first mountains you can see when entering the Rocky Mountains from Calgary. It stands dominant with a sheer cliff face making it unique to its surroundings. It offers hikers a stellar traverse from either west to east or east to west depending on which you prefer.
I've created this video with the intent to aid others with knowledge of the traverse from east to west including both routes near the chains.

HIKING in the CANADIAN ROCKIES: LADY MACDONALD
SKIP INTRO: 0:35
Lady MacDonald was perhaps one of the most challenging scrambles this summer due to the final ridge connecting the false summit to the true summit. With some hefty exposure and probable death just a slip away, this one is not for the faint of heart.
This is the final episode as I complete the Triple Crown of Canmore. The Triple Crown consists of Ha Ling Peak, East End of Rundle and Lady MacDonald. The three summits mentioned must be completed within a 72 hour time period in order to have your name registered.
I've created this video with the intent to aid others with knowledge of the hike from the parking lot along Cougar Creek up to the summit of Lady MacDonald.
