Fishing In The Bahamas - April 2018
Fishing Nassau Bahamas - April 2018. We deep-sea fished for 'big-game' then tried some reef fishing. We caught 6-7 species in total and had a blast. Definitely a different type of fishing for me but there is always knowledge crossover between different types of fishing no matter how different they may seem.

Sailing Out To Sombrero Reef & Snorkeling!
This video is about Sailing Out To Sombrero Reef & Snorkeling! We encountered a mass of pink Moon Jellies at the reef! The coral, while the bleaching is obvious, there are some areas of new growth! There are still lots of pretty tropicals.

Ft Lauderdale to Bimini Bahamas 2019
We completed our second trip to Bimini from Ft Lauderdale for a quick 4 day getaway and it was spectacular. The ocean was flat calm on the way there and the seas were 2-3 feet on the way back home (didn't include that in the video). We explored Honeymoon Harbour in Bimini, Sapona shipwreck, fished for yellowtail, and snorkeled Bimini Road. We had a great time and will be back soon!

Alissa diving with sharks in the Bahamas
This video is of me experiencing sharks in their natural environment. For those of you who believe that I am crazy for diving with sharks and that my father is crazy for letting me do this, it is possible that you are basing your opinion on the popular ideas that came out of a 1970’s novel by Peter Benchley and later made into the most successful-yet damaging-horror movie in the history of filmmaking, namely “Jaws.”
Unfortunately, because of this, sharks have been targeted and irrationally feared and this has led to the the wholesale destruction of entire species of sharks. Over 100 MILLION sharks are killed each year as a result of the shark fin trade, an industry that completely destroys the ecosystem. Sharks are caught, have their fins cut off, and then their bodies are thrown back into the water to drown. The irrational far that the public has of sharks has led to their being no incentive to protect them. However, 95% of all shark species are virtually harmless to humans. Globally, 6 people on average are killed by sharks every year. That compares to the 30 people killed by dogs, 20 people killed by cows, 113 people killed by ladder related incidents, and selfies these days result in an increasing number of deaths. You are statistically significantly more likely to die from a family ride in the country. Currently, there are at least 20 species of sharks endangered or critically endangered, with many more vulnerable sharks to follow along the way if something doesn’t change.
Interactions between sharks and humans are more common than you would ever believe and if you have swum in any named sea or ocean, you have been anywhere from 10-200 feet from a shark without you even knowing it. Sharks have little interest in humans, and except for a couple of high risk activities like spearfishing, swimming in seas immediately adjacent to great white hunting areas, and aggressively chumming the waters for tiger sharks, the odds of you having a negative interaction with a shark are exceptionally minute to almost nonexistent.
As a scuba diver, the bubbles that I blow, the smell of my neoprene, and the fact that I look nothing like a distressed fish means that the sharks that I come across and will come across have nothing more than a passing interest in me. Even the high profile news stories of divers being attacked by great whites on the barrier reef or while spear fishing by tiger sharks account for no more than a couple of incidents per year and yet snorkelers, swimmers and divers are seen my sharks (even if the swimmers don't see them) millions of times a year. From my point of view, being in the mere presence of these wonderful, graceful animals is a humbling, powerful experience. As a diver interacting with these sharks, my risk of getting hurt is infinitely less than my risk of getting hurt on a Sunday ride through the country or a supervised activity at a summer day camp.
If you look at my video you will see that the sharks show no aggression (they do not have down turned pectoral fins, arched backs, or jerky movements) but rather like me are relaxed and curious.
So how can you help? Don’t buy shark products, don’t be a participator in the shark fin trade. Boycott airlines or industries in any way connected to finning. But most importantly, do not let an old movie and years of irrational fears stop you from protecting these beautiful creatures or enjoying the ocean with them. Without sharks, the ecosystem would fall into disarray and the reefs would be decimated. Sharks are necessary not only for the survival of other animals, but for our survival.
Not everyone needs to get up close and personal with a shark, but always be aware of the integral roles sharks have in our world, that they do not deserve to be destroyed, and let’s all educate ourselves about sharks and do not buy into the hysteria of Shark Week or new movies like “The Shallows.” Please also remember that for the most part, the sharks that are somewhat aggressive to humans exist well offshore and in the deep oceans, and so the odds of you being attacked while swimming, snorkeling, or diving, are infinitesimally low even if you are in the presence of these beautiful fish
