Most kiteboarders that make the trek south to the sun-filled, sandy beaches of Mexico head to the usual hotspots like La Ventana or Playa del Carmen. However, the best sessions often happen off the beaten path. If you’re ready to explore a more authentic side of Mexico, you’ll love the quiet beaches, steady breeze, and local vibes in Progreso.
This hidden gem in the Yucatan is skimpy on all-inclusive resorts and wild parties, but chock-full of friendly locals, rich history, and incredible nature – both above the ground and below. It's easy to forget just how big Mexico is… But to give you a sense of the vastness of this country, we're way out east on the Yucatan peninsula, about 1,800 miles east of La Ventana and a few hours west of Cancun.
As a kiteboarder, Progreso may not have made it across your radar. We had no clue what to expect from this spot until we began planning our trip to visit Angel and the team at Yuckite - the local kiteboarding school. That said, we went and collected as much intel as we could to share with you!
Here’s everything you need to know to get you started on your trip to Progreso – starting with the kite spot details followed by some travel tips to help you make the most of your trip.

Cancún’s ISLA BLANCA - Why this “kitesurfing paradise” is a beach you should go to
Isla Blanca is known as the best place to kitesurf in Cancún because of its flat surface, shallow water and constant breeze... But a lot of people don't know how great this beach is for ANYONE, even if you’re not into kitesurfing! I spent an afternoon there with some friends and was pleasantly surprised. The side of the beach that faces the ocean (the opposite side from where you kitesurf) is beautiful! (And I have to admit, watching those kitesurfers do their thing WAS pretty cool...!)
Check out my video to see what this beach looks like, and find out everything you need to know about going there.

Is there anything quite like the feeling of cresting a hill and catching a glimpse of kites in the air as you approach a kite spot for the first time? That first thought… “It’s windy!!!” and the building excitement as you get closer and closer to the kite beach? This is a kite spot most of us have heard of and one many of us dream of one day riding… it’s the kiteboarding mecha of Europe: Tarifa, Spain.
For those of us who have only experienced kite spots in North America or the Caribbean, this is a completely new world. Tarifa has a rich and colourful history that will enchant both kiteboarders and non-kiteboarders. This city got its name nearly a thousand years before America was even settled… and it’s been a wild ride ever since! In modern day, it’s ripping winds make this spot a wind lovers dream.

When it comes to kiteboarding, Hood River is most definitely a hot spot. But it's unique - you're riding in a river, surrounded by rocky mountains, lush green forest, and a rainbow of kites on the windy summer days.
Hood River is home base to many American pro kiteboarders including Colleen Carroll, Craig Cunningham, and Brandon Scheid. The American head offices of several kite brands like North, Slingshot, and Liquid Force are all here!
In summer, this spot brings kiters from around the world to have a go in the slider park, participate in one of the many summer events like Bridge of the Gods and Kiteboard 4 Cancer, and enjoy lit sessions with this incredible backdrop.

Foilboarding: Will my kite work? - Foil Fridays Ep 06 MACkiteboarding.com
A popular question is, “How will my kite(s) work for foiling?”. A legitimate question and a simple answer is, Yes. However, the kite you have or choose will have certain advantages and disadvantages for your riding and styles of foiling.
To keep this simple, let's break kites down into their respective categories since those kites have similar designs. The majority of kites on the market can be broken down into four categories.
- Freeride
- Freestyle
- Wave,
- Ram Air foils.
If you have questions about how your specific kite will work for foiling or what size kite may be most appropriate for your situation, feel free to reach out via 800.622.4655, live chat, or email at Kiteboarder@mackite.com
