YUSUPOV PALACE (MOYKA PALACE), St. Petersburg, Russian Federation
The Yusupov Palace is also known by Moyka (or Moika) Palace, because it was built in a bank of the river Moyka (Мо́йка, in Russian). The river is small but surrounds the central area of St. Petersburg turning it into an island. The Palace is one of the most beautiful palaces throughout the Russian Federation. Firstly built in 1770, from 1830 to 1917 it belonged to the House of Yusupov. It was famous not only by its architectural design, but also by the frequent and sumptuous receptions, including dancing soirées and masquerades. In its cellar, the mad monk Grigory Rasputin was poisoned, shot and beaten by Prince Felix Yusupov and others, in December 1916. In this slideshow some aspects of the exterior and of the interior of the Palace are presented. Some additional bibliographical notes on Yusupov and Rasputin are also forwarded, with a surprise climax at the end of the show (HDV 1440 x 1080).
Music score: Candlelight Sonata (Wedding Reception) provided by Pinnacle Studio HD, version 15.0. Photographed in September 8, 2010.

For centuries the Yusupovs had been tsars’ trustworthy and favorite associates.
The Palace on Moika became the Yusupovs' family residence in 1820 and until Bolshevik Revolution remained the richest aristocratic house of Russia. The Yusupov Palace acquired its present appearance in the course of palace’s constructions from 1760 till 1850 done by the famous architects of the time. The staterooms in neoclassical style are remarkable for their rich and elegant decoration. The unique West European works of art as well as musical instruments of the 19th century adorn the palace interior. The germ of the palace is the unique Domestic Theatre built in the Rococo style as a miniature of the world-known Marinsky Theatre.
Yusupovs' palace on Moika is notoriously famous for Rasputin's murder that took place in one of the cell rooms on 16-17 December 1916. The exhibition dedicated to Grigory Rasputin is set up in the original rooms where the tragedy took place.

Yusupov Palace (where Rasputin was murdered) St. Petersburg,
Rasputin, labelled Mad Monk by historians, was born in 1869 in Siberia and arrived in St. Petersburg in 1911. Within a few years he had become one of the most influential men in government circles. His rise to prominence was due to his close relationship with Nicholas 11 and his wife Alexandra. The heir to the throne, Alexis, suffered from haemophilia and only Rasputin could stop the boy's bleeding. Because of this Nicholas 11 and Alexandra believed he was a holy man sent to protect the boy.
The Yusupov Palace, where his life ended, Rasputin is as famous in death as he was in life. At the end of 1916, a group of aristocrats in league with the Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich , a cousin of Nicholas 11 and Prince felix Yusupov married to Nicholas's niece - decided that Rasputin's influence was too great, and that he had to be killed to save Russia. They lured him into the Yusupov Palace where he was assassinated.
The Yusupov Palace, located on the Moika Embankment, is an impressive historic and architectural monument. It is a fine example of Russian classicism and reserves the memory of its noble owners, the Yusupov Princes, whose wealth could only be compared to that of the Romanovs. The Yusupovs were great collectors of art, and while most of their collection was moved to the Hermitage after the Revolution, traces of the incredible wealth still remain: sitting rooms decorated in various architectural styles, intricate chandeliers and candelabras, sculptures and paintings.

Yusupov Palace on the Moika River in St. Petersburg, Russia
Traveling with Viking Homelands Ocean Cruise, May 26 - June 9, 2018. From Bergen to Stockholm.
One of two surviving St. Petersburg residences of the monumentally wealthy Yusupov family, the Yusupov Palace on the Moika River is perhaps most famous as the scene of the assassination of Grigory Rasputin, and is one of the few aristocratic homes in the city to have retained many of its original interiors.
Grigori Yefimovich Rasputin was a Russian mystic and self-proclaimed holy man who befriended the family of Tsar Nicholas II, the last monarch of Russia, and gained considerable influence in late imperial Russia.

Waltz in A flat major by Anton Arensky
The Yusupov Palace on the Moika River in St. Petersburg is one of two St. Petersburg residences surviving in the city...The land on which the palace stands, in the south of the historic centre close to the Mariinsky Theatre, was originally the site of a wooden palace belonging to Tsarevna Praskovia Ivanovna, niece of Peter the Great. In the mid-18th century it was bought by Count Peter Shuvalov. In 1770, his heir Andrei Shuvalov commissioned the French architect Jean-Baptiste Vallin de la Mothe, designer of the Small Hermitage, Gostiny Dvor and the Academy of Sciences, to build a new palace on the site....
In 1830, the palace was purchased by Prince Nikolay Borisovich Yusupov, and it remained in the ownership of the family until seized by the Bolsheviks in 1917. The palace, nowadays is remembered chiefly for its association with the murder of Rasputin in 1916....
After the October Revolution, the palace was handed to the educational authorities, which fortunately opted to preserve many of the original interiors and used the building as a type of clubhouse for the city's teachers.
