ZANIS LIPKE MEMORIAL - RIGA (LETTONIA)

Žanis Lipke, īstajā vārdā Jānis, Otrā pasaules kara laikā no dažādiem Rīgas geto izglāba no nāves daudzas ebreju ģimenes. View of the City of Riga, Latvia from the Academy of Sciences
Come and Join ''TheCelotajs'' and his view of the City of Riga, Latvia from Academy of Sciences Observation Deck. As we look out across the city, we will see another great view of the south section of the City of Riga. Looking northwest we can see the far rear of the Central Market and its many warehouses. As we move left we can see the Daugava River and Salu ''Islands'' Bridge. In this part of the city you can see modern buildings as well as buildings that date back to post World War I. This is also a very poor and depressed area of the city, as one can see when walking through the area. Also further south is the former location of the 1941 Jewish Ghetto area. Also found in this area you will find the Memorial to the Great Choral Synagogue that was burned down by the Nazis on July 4, 1941 with hundreds of Jews locked inside and who died in the flames. The monument dedicated to Zanis Lipke 1941-1945, who saved a large number of Jewish people during this period of time. You can see this in the video City of Riga, Latvia South Section of City. As I walked through the different parts of the area, it ended up making me quite depressed, with people still living in buildings that by all standards should have be condemned and torn down. Moving on, is a view of the Daugava Rives and its west bank. Looking right, we can see the rear if Central Market, Saint Peters Church, Doma Cathedral. We can also see the rear of Central Market and the tent area of the market. Looking left you can see the Iron Bridge Rigas Railway Bridge. Looking down you can see an example of some of the depressed area, with people living in some of these buildings. As we look south, we can see more depressed buildings with modern building mixed among them. Looking southwest, we can see the Salu ''Islands'' Bridge and Rigas Radio and Television Tower. Looking southeast we can see another part of the city and the railway with a passenger train entering the station. Looking down, we can see the Doms of Vissvetas Dievmates Russian Orthodox Cathedral. Still looking down and located on the corner we can see one of Riga Police Station. Looking east, we can see the center city. Looking down again, we can see the railway overpass of Gogola iela and the Latvia Minister of Transportation building. Looking west, we can see the Riga Television Station. I hope you enjoyed the view of the City of Riga from Academy of Sciences Observation Deck. Please feel free to return as many times as you like.

Building on the Past: Zaiga and Maris Gaili at TEDxRiga
Zaiga is head of the Zaigas Gailes birojs architecture company and the author of several books related to architecture along with her husband Māris. The list of government posts previously held by Māris includes State Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Reform, Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development. Their story leads you through development process how Ķīpsala, the island in Riga, from an old fisherman's village became most coveted and perhaps the most expensive residential area in Riga.Together they converted the old fabrics, fishermen's wooden houses into prestigious living space, school, impressive museum, restaurant.
Architectural theorists still seem to be uncertain how to define the combination of modern functionalism and historical renovation. Zaiga as an architect has defined it as the renaissance of the change of the 20th/21st centuries.
