Zanzibar Life: ZALA Park. Mangrove Forest Tour in dugout canoe
Description
Zanzibar Land Animal Park (ZALA Park)
ZALA Park is the initiative of Mr. Mohammed, an enthusiastic teacher from the village for Muungoni in the south of Zanzibar, opposite of Uzi Island. On his plot, Mohammed features a collection of several protected land animals, with a focus on reptiles. The idea is to familiarize the local population about the endangered species and to sensitize them about conservation. Local school classes are regularly visiting the park. Also tourists can visit, paying an entrance fee, which is the only source of income for ZALA Park.
At ZALA Park's vivaria, it is possible to observe the animals from close and to get scientific explanations that prove many superstitious beliefs wrong.
Some of the Zanzibarian species being shown at ZALA Park include tree hyrax, monitor lizards, plated lizards, suni antelopes, land crabs, terrapins, tortoises, chameleons and various types of snakes.
Besides the vivaria, ZALA Park also features a nature trail through the mangrove forest. Further, Mohammed offers a boat trip along the coast where visitors can learn about the importance of corals and mangroves.
20 percent of the ticket sales are being used to pay the villagers for not killing protected species of animals.

Scuba Diving in Zanzibar - Tanzania
Zanzibar’s allure is legendary. One of East Africa’s great trading centers, the archipelago has been for centuries a crossroads of culture, a melting pot of influences where Africa, India and Arabia meet, a complete change of pace from the mainland, a place where life’s rhythms are set by the monsoon winds and the cycles of the moon. Zanzibar is an island about 23 miles off the East African Coast. Its very name evokes romantic associations – smell of spices, images of narrow streets, Arab chests, carved doors, coral reefs. It is a tourist’s paradise, with tranquil, warm tropical waters, many miles of beautiful sandy beaches on the Indian Ocean. Zanzibar has a rich and ancient past, having been the center for travelers sailing from distant lands of the Middle East by dhows.Due to the generally slower pace of life, its tranquility has survived Zanzibar’s lasting mystique has attracted travelers from around the world for centuries. In past generations ivory, slaves and spices were transported on large wooden sailing Dhows across the world. Although spices remain a main export, Zanzibar’s main attraction is its beauty and the contrasting coasts of this magical Spice Island.
The dive sites off the coast of Zanzibar are many, varied and suitable for all levels of experience. The most famous is Mnemba Atoll Marine Park, a reserve where net fishing is banned to help stop the destruction of the reef and increase fish stock levels. Marine park fees are paid for each guest that enters and the money goes back into the local communities of the fisherman who would normally fish the waters and now fish else where. This scheme is extremely effective, the reef is teaming with shoals of fish and the coral is re-growing at an impressive pace. One of the reefs is home to a green turtle cleaning station – the current record of turtles seen on one dive sits at twenty one!
Leven Banks is an example of a more advanced site, situated in the Pemba channel, this huge dive site with some strong currents comes up from the deep to within around fourteen metres from the surface and is where you are most likely to see big fish. Schooling barracudas, big sting rays and the occasional shark can often be seen passing in the blue. Even if the big guys don’t appear this is still an excellent site with large fan corals, schools of snapper and Moorish idols floating motionless as you are pushed along by the currents. A very good dive for advanced divers.
The local reefs closer to the dive centre are also well worth a visit. Ranging from ten to forty five minutes away they can easily be reached in a morning or afternoon and still give you plenty of time to relax on a beach afterwards and work on your sun tan. These reefs are stunning, with a large array of coral to be found and lots of smaller creatures such as nudibranches and mantis shrimp hiding in all the nooks and crannies.

A mangrove forest, a happy story and the world's greatest seafood!
Nhangau, Mozambique: Fish and shrimp are back. Nets laid out with small boats and pulled ashore. A few years ago there were hardly any fish to get, now it is abundant.
20 years of war went badly affected throughout Mozambique. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost and the country went from being among the richest in Africa to become one of the poorest in the world. During the war it was difficult to get access to the forests of the interior, but the need for biofuels was still there. Along the coast of Mozambique the people started cutting down the mangrove forests. Completely unaware that the importance of these forests was for life along the coast.
In 1994 there were no more mangroves left in Nhangau, a fishing village north of Beira. The result was dramatic. Fish, crabs and shrimp were gone. The local fishermen had lost their livelihood. The village was also more prone to erosion, land areas were washed out to sea during the rainy season. The altered ecosystem also caused a strong increase of snakes, since the natural enemies of snakes disappeared along with the forest. Without the protective forest were major problems with frequent and stronger winds that hit the village. This caused great destruction of houses, but also made it difficult to pursue agriculture. With all these problems accomplishing a group of dedicated villagers to seek advice from ADEL Sofala in Beira. They had heard that this organization could help them solve the problems that had come after the forest had disappeared.
In 2000, the project to rebuild the Mangrove Forest started. There have been many challenges along the way. The 14 local activists have since planted 3,750 acres of forest, or more than 4 million trees. Now is the breeding sites in Mangrove forest back and village fishermen can again fill their nets with delightful seafood to enjoy for the whole village.
