Özkonak Underground city
Özkonak Underground City is an ancient city built on the northern slopes of Mt. Idis about 14 km northeast of Avanos in Turkey. The city has many strata made up of volcanic granite its larger areas are connected to each other by tunnels. Özkonak had a built in communication system of pipes to each of its levels, unlike Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu which have no such communication systems. Each carved out room had ventilation provided by holes when the city was closed against enemies.
Özkonak Underground City was discovered in 1972 by a local farmer named Latif Acar, who was curious about where his excess crop water was disappearing to. Latif discovered an underground room which, when later excavated, revealed a whole city which could house 60,000 people for up to three months. Although only four floors are now open, the complex contains a total of ten floors, to a depth of 40m.
Unlike the other underground cities in this area, there were holes above the tunnels used for dumping hot oil on the enemy. Just like Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu, Özkonak has a water well, ventilation system, winery and moving stone doors.

Cappadocia has one of the largest underground cities in history, and thanks to its tuff structure, it was easy for the people of that period to create them. There are important underground cities such as Derinkuyu underground city, Kaymaklı Underground City, Özkonak Underground City, Tatlarin (Acıgöl) Underground City, Mazı Underground City, but I have organized 5 underground cities which are important in this video. 1.Derinkuyu Underground City
The first of the deepest, widest and most amazing underground cities of Cappadocia is Derinkuyu Underground City.Nevşehir - Niğde road and 30 km away from Nevşehir is located in the underground city of Derinkuyu.
Derinkuyu Underground City was discovered in 1963 and some of it was cleaned and opened to visitors in 1967. Although it is now 8 floors open down to 50 meters, if it is cleared at all, the actual depth can reach 85 meters, and 12 -13. is estimated to go down to the floor. The underground city of Cappadocia, whose clean and accessible area spans a total of 2.5 km, takes its name from the 52 water wells in it. These water wells go down to 60 - 70 meters and meet both the water demand and the ventilation chimney.
2. Kaymaklı Underground City
One of the largest underground cities in Cappadocia is Kaymaklı Underground City. Almost half the size of the Derinkuyu Underground City, this underground city is located in Kaymakli Town, 20 km from Nevsehir and has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site since 1984. Although the original depth goes down to 8 times, Kaymaklı Underground City is currently open to visit 4 times.
3. Özkonak Underground City
Özkonak Underground City, which is 14 km from Nevşehir Avanos, is built on the northern slope where the tuff layer of Mount İdiş is the most dense. Visiting this underground city of Cappadocia, which was opened to visitors in 1972, you will feel as if you are leaving an apartment. 4.Tatlarin (Acıgöl) Underground City

5.Mazi Underground City

The main meaning of Mazı is ‘Ancient City’ and there are many rock tombs belonging to Early Roman and Byzantine periods in the valley where the village was founded.
The 8-storey underground city has 4 entrances and is closed with sliding stones with spear holes in the middle to protect against enemies. The difference of the stables at the entrance from the other examples is the width of the troughs and areas carved into the rocks.

In a spectacular landscape, entirely sculpted by erosion, the Göreme valley and its surroundings contain rock-hewn sanctuaries that provide unique evidence of Byzantine art in the post-Iconoclastic period. Dwellings, troglodyte villages and underground towns -- the remains of a traditional human habitat dating back to the 4th century -- can also be seen there.The rupestral sanctuaries of Cappadocia constitute an unique artistic achievement in a region of superlative natural features, providing irreplaceable testimony to post-iconoclast Byzantium. The dwellings, village convents and churches retain the fossilized images of a province of the Byzantine Empire between the 4th century and the Turkish invasion.
The eroded plateau of the Göreme valley is a spectacular example of the effects of differential erosion of the volcanic tuff sediments by wind and water. Typical features are pillars, columns, towers, obelisks and needles that reach heights of 40 m. The major remnant of erosion, Akdağ (1,325 m), is the dominant feature in the valley. The nearby Erciyas volcano is still active with occasional minor eruptions. Its outstanding example represents the Earth's evolutionary history. Within these rock formations people have excavated a network of caves which served as refuges, residences, storage and places of worship dating from the 4th century. The surrounding landscape is agricultural with a number of small scattered rural villages.The historical setting, the rock-hewn churches and the unusual eroded landforms combine to produce a mixed cultural/natural landscape of unusual appearance. Architectural styles are based on the local stone and the valley has changed little over the centuries.Although the area has been extensively used and modified by man for centuries the resulting landscape is one of harmony and consideration of the intrinsic values of the natural landforms. After 842, however, many rupestral churches were dug in Cappadocia. These churches were richly decorated with brightly coloured figurative painting. Among them were those in the Göreme valley: Tokalı Kilise, El Nazar Kilise (10th century), Barbara Kilise, Saklı Kilise (11th century), Elmalı Kilise and Karanlık Kilise (end of the 12th to beginning of the 13th centuries), etc.
Göreme, located among the fairy chimney rock formations, is a town in Cappadocia, a historical region of Turkey. It is in the Nevşehir Province in Central Anatolia and has a population of around 2,500 people.Former names of the town have been Korama, Matiana, Maccan or Machan, and Avcilar. When Göreme Valley nearby was designated an important tourist destination, a center for all tourism in Cappadocia, the name of the town was changed to Göreme for practical reasons.
The Göreme National Park (Göreme Milli Parklar in Turkish) was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
The location of Göreme was first settled back in the Roman period. Christianity was then the prevailing religion in the region, which is evident from many rock churches that can still be seen today.

Massive ancient underground city discovered in Turkey's Nevşehir
With 2014 soon coming to an end, potentially the year’s biggest archeological discovery of an underground city has come from Turkey’s Central Anatolian province of Nevşehir, which is known world-wide for its Fairy Chimneys rock formation.
The city was discovered by means of Turkey’s Housing Development Administration’s (TOKİ) urban transformation project. Some 1,500 buildings were destructed located in and around the Nevşehir fortress, and the underground city was discovered when the earthmoving to construct new buildings had started.
TOKİ Head Mehmet Ergün Turan said the area where the discovery was made was announced as an archeological area to be preserved.
“It is not a known underground city. Tunnel passages of seven kilometers are being discussed. We stopped the construction we were planning to do on these areas when an underground city was discovered,” said Turan.
The city is thought to date back 5,000 years and is located around the Nevşehir fortress. Escape galleries and hidden churches were discovered inside the underground city.
Stating that they were going to move the urban transformation project to the outskirts of the city, Turan said they had paid 90 million Turkish Liras for the project already, but did not see this as a loss, as this discovery may be the world’s largest underground city.
Hasan Ünver, mayor of Nevşehir, said other underground cities in Nevşehir’s various districts do not even amount to the “kitchen” of this new underground city.
“The underground city [was found] in the 45 hectares of the total 75 hectare area that is within the [urban] transformation project. We started working in 2012 with the project. We have taken 44 historical objects under preservation. The underground city was discovered when we began the destruction in line with the protocol. The first galleries were spotted in 2013. We applied to the [Cultural and Natural Heritage] Preservation Board and the area was officially registered,” said Ünver.
The newly discovered underground city will be the biggest among the other underground cities in Nevşehir that have been discovered so far.

Huge Underground City Discovered In Turkey
Of all the famed underground cities pockmarking the landscape in Turkey’s Cappadocia region, perhaps the most remarkable is the underground network called Derinkuyu. When swelled to capacity, it could house 20,000 people in its 18 stories of living quarters, shops and escape routes. Today, it’s recognized as one of the jewels of this Turkish archaeological wonderland.
But as amazing as Derinkuyu may be, a recently discovered underground city buried deep inside a hilltop may put it to shame. And this one was discovered completely by accident.
“This new discovery will be added as a new pearl, a new diamond, a new gold” to the wonders of the region, the mayor of nearby Nevsehir, Hasan Unver, told National Geographic. “When the underground city beneath Nevsehir Castle is completely revealed, it is almost certain to change the destination of Cappadocia dramatically.”
The complex dates back about 5,000 years, and is all the more incredible for being found by mere happenstance. Years ago, the government issued an edict to demolish about 1,500 buildings in the area as part of an urban renewal project, according to the Hurriyet Daily News. Then, while workers were shifting around piles of earth in 2012 to start building, they stumbled across a vast labyrinthine network that early estimates say could be one-third larger than Derinkuyu.
