The Rhodes University School of Journalism and Media Studies runs the Cue Media project during NAF every year. CueTube covers shows and events that will be of interest to Festinos. Albany, South Africa (also known as Cape Borders, Cape Frontier, Settler Country, and Western Region) was a district in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Grahamstown was traditionally the administrative capital, cultural centre and largest town of the Albany district.
The area was previously known as the 'Zuurveld' by migrating Boer farmers in the late 18th century, and it lay near the boundary between the Cape Colony and the traditional Xhosa lands to the east. The 1820 Settlers were instrumental in settling and farming the district and giving it some of its distinctive local culture. The ANC government merged the Albany area with the large Xhosa township of Alice as the municipal area of 'Cacadu' [1].

Viva Festival
As thousands descend on National Arts Festival, Africa's biggest cultural pilgrimage, performers ignited the stage at the opening in Grahamstown. Colourful costumes, energetic dance moves and authentic sounds filled The 1820 Settlers' Monument.
Dignitaries from across South Africa attended the opening, many addressing the importance of the National Arts Festival to the growth and sustainability of the arts. Mr Paul Mashatile the Minister of Arts and Culture of South Africa officially opened the festival

Dr Mkhize to present lecture on Citizenship and our Country
Former Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Dr Zweli Mkhize, will present a lecture titled, Citizenship in our Country on Thursday, 08 June 2017. The address is scheduled to start at 14h30 at the Barret Lecture Theatre.
Community engagement has always been central to the life and work of Dr Mkhize. In addition to being the former Premier of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Chancellor of the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, and current Treasurer of the African National Congress (ANC), Dr Mkhize is also the founder of the Ikusasa LeAfrika Foundation (ILAF) a community-based organisation that advances the social and economic development of marginalised communities nationally.
Dr Mkhize’s lecture comes at a time when staff and students in higher education are grappling with questions about their role as academics and citizens. Student movements have raised important questions about the accessibility and relevance of academic knowledge, as well as questions about how the academic space can engage more effectively with broader South African society.
Dr Mkhize believes that Universities in South Africa had been disconnected from the social concerns of local communities for most of their existence.
Recent student-led movements, in particular, the #RhodesMustFall and #FeesMustFall protests, have called for the decolonisation of South African higher education institutions, the democratisation of the knowledge production, as well as for social responsiveness of the sector.
