In attesa del suo nuovo curatore capo, il museo si è gettato nella mischia della Vienna Art Week 2013 con alcune mostre, tra cui una raccolta di opere recenti del Belvedere, e una personale di Ursula Meyer, sensuale e senz'altro coinvolgente. Però è tempo di cambiare ritmo.
Das 21er Haus / The 21er Haus
Der für die Weltausstellung 1958 in Brüssel entstandene Österreich-Pavillon von Karl Schwanzer wurde 1962 als Museum für die Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts in Wien eröffnet - 2011 erhielt das sanierte Architekturjuwel unter der Leitung des Belvedere ein neues Profil.
Mit seinen lichten, klar gegliederten Ausstellungs- und Veranstaltungsräumen sowie einem Kino entspricht das Gebäude in seiner Struktur allen Anforderungen zeitgemäßer interdisziplinärer Produktionsbedingungen. Zur Gewährleistung eines modernen Museumsbetriebs wurde das 21er Haus von Adolf Krischanitz, einem Schüler Karl Schwanzers, adaptiert und erweitert.
Das neue Café-Restaurant mit Terrasse im Skulpturenhof gestaltete Adolf Krischanitz gemeinsam mit Hermann Czech. Für das neue Buchhandlungskonzept konnte Bernhard Cella mit dem Salon für Kunstbuch gewonnen werden. Seit seiner Eröffnung im November 2011 wird das Gebäude als Plattform für die österreichische Kunst von 1945 bis heute im internationalen Kontext genutzt.
Im 21er Haus sind sowohl die Schausammlung der Wotruba-Stiftung als auch die Artothek des Bundes untergebracht.

Austria’s Pavilion for the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels was designed by Karl Schwanzer and then converted into a Museum of Twentieth Century Art, opening in Vienna in 1962. 2011 this redeveloped architectural gem was given a new profile by the Belvedere.
As a structure the building meets all the interdisciplinary requirements of the contemporary museum with light, clearly organized exhibition and event spaces and a cinema. The 21er Haus has been adapted and extended by Adolf Krischanitz, a student of Karl Schwanzer, to ensure that all the facilities of a modern museum are provided.
Since November 2011 the building is serving as a platform for Austrian art in an international context from 1945 to today. The new museum is also housing the Wotruba Foundation’s permanent collection and the government’s Artothek (contemporary art collection).

The 21er Haus. Museum of Contemporary Art presents four Austrian artists: Marc Adrian, Richard Kriesche, Helga Philipp, and Gerwald Rockenschaub. The foundations for post-war Austrian constructive, concrete art had been laid by the radical ideas of modernism (Vienna Circle, twelve-tone music), the rejection of Austrian Expressionism’s figurative tendencies, and the general notion of a new beginning after the Second World War. In 1967 Werner Hofmann curated a groundbreaking international exhibition Kinetika at today’s 21er Haus. At the heart of this exhibition, the work of Adrian, Kriesche and Philipp reveals the beginnings of constructive, concrete art or op art in Austria. They focus on a (new) role for viewers and their perception, and explore the surface qualities and structures of artworks. The four austrian positions are put an international context with individual works by the following artists: Josef Albers, Getulio Alviani, Marina Apollonio, Hartmut Böhm, Dadamaino, Kurt Kren, Richard Paul Lohse, Gerold Miller, François Morellet, Uli Pohl , Jorrit Tornquist, and Ludwig Wilding. Preview of the Oswald Oberhuber retrospective at the 21er Haus, that shows his prolific output from the late 1940s to the present through approximately 300 works, including informal sculpture, drawings and paintings, collages, assemblages, language and number pictures, big fabric works, and many more. Oswald Oberhuber (b. 1931) – artist, exhibition maker, gallery owner, professor and rector of the University of Applied Arts Vienna – is one of the most influential living Austrian artists: “People shouldn’t develop a style; really, every image should be new. At some point, you get into a routine and know how things will turn out. As soon as I feel like that, I’m bored.” The exhibition Oswald Oberhuber is being compiled in close collaboration with the artist, and is curated by Luisa Ziaja and Alfred Weidinger. March 9th - June 26th, 2016.

With the exhibition Out of the Unknown the 21er HAUS presents a cross-section of key periods by Austrian artist Kurt Hüpfner (born 1930 in Vienna), who is still active to this day. The works shown include his graphic beginnings, his drawings, his distinctive assemblage works from the 1970s, as well as the small sculptures that characterize his work from the mid-1980s onward. In these twelve bronze heads from the Chinese zodiac Ai Weiwei addresses the ransacking of the fountain at the summer palace Yuanming Yuan in Beijing by French and British troops in 1860. This wanton act of destruction and pillaging was a bitter humiliation for the people of China and marked the end of the Second Opium War. With military force the British and French had coerced China to accept their opium import which was crucial for their sourcing of money to buy tea, porcelain and silk. Built in 1749 the imperial retreat had been inspired by European baroque architecture making Prince Eugene’s Palace an even more intriguing backdrop to Weiwei’s work.
Between 2000 and 2007 China bought back five of the looted animal heads (the original sculptures were of the whole body). In 2009 two further heads that had entered Yves Saint Laurent’s private collection came up for sale at an auction. The rest are still missing. All of the Chinese government’s efforts to repatriate the two bronzes have failed. Ai Weiwei responded by recreating the series in bronzes that are not exact replicas but an artistic interpretation and as such, both physically and conceptually, are a product of the twenty-first century. The artist deliberately placed the heads, which were literally decapitated by the looters, onto posts and places them around the Upper Belvedere’s main water feature as a prelude to the exhibition at the 21er Haus.

Das 21er Haus realisiert gemeinsam mit der TU Wien eine experimentelles Wohninstallation, die in den Sommermonaten im Tiefhof des Museums aufgestellt wird. Nach The Art of ReCreation (2014) über Freizeit wird heuer das Wohnen der Zukunft thematisiert.
Wie kann Wohnraum optimal genutzt werden? Welche räumlichen Voraussetzungen sind heute maßgeblich, um günstig und angenehm zu wohnen? Wie wirken sich neue Grundbedürfnisse der Menschen in Krisenzeiten auf die Architektur von temporären Behausungen wie Notunterkünften, den sozialen Wohnbau oder auf die Revitalisierung von Altbau in den Städten aus? Braucht es einen Paradigmenwechsel in der Wohnbauauffassung?
All diesen Fragen geht das diesjährige Pavillon-Projekt Leben in der Wand nach. Die Wand als konstruktives und funktionales Element soll im finalen Entwurf innovativ und neu interpretiert werden.
Das Projekt wird von Architektur-Studierenden der TU Wien unter der Leitung von Christine Hohenbüchler (Leiterin des Instituts für Kunst und Gestaltung, Zeichnen und visuelle Sprachen) und Architekt David Calas (Lektor in der Abteilung Wohnbau und Entwerfen) umgesetzt. Das 1:1 Modell soll zudem in den Sommermonaten auch von den Studierenden als aktiver Ort der Auseinandersetzung genutzt werden. Leben in der Wand, ein Ort der Begegnung.

Together with the Vienna University of Technology, the 21er Haus is realizing an experimental housing installation, which will be located in the lower-level courtyard of the museum during the summer months. After leisure with The Art of ReCreation (2014), this year’s subject will be living in the future.
How can we ensure the optimum use of living spaces? Which spatial requirements are essential in order to live cheaply and comfortably today? In times of crisis, what influence do people’s new basic needs have on the architecture of temporary housing, such as emergency shelters, on social housing or on the renovation of old urban buildings? Do we need a paradigm shift in our approach to housing?
All of these questions will be addressed by this year’s pavilion project Living in the Wall. The wall as a constructive and functional element will be innovatively reinterpreted by the final design.
The project will be realized by students of architecture from the Vienna University of Technology under the direction of Christine Hohenbüchler (Head of the Institute of Art and Design, Drawing and Visual Languages) and architect David Calas (Lecturer in the Institute of Housing Construction and Design). Furthermore, the 1:1 model will also be used by the students as an active site for debate during the summer months. Living in the Wall, a meeting place.

Fritz Wotruba's works have found a new home in the 21er Haus. Only a few of the more then 500 sculptures belonging to the Fritz Wotruba Privat Foundation are now on display downstairs. Besides permanent and temporary exhibitions there is room for storage, archival and office facilities.

The 21er Haus celebrates Peter Weibel´s 70th birthday with the huge retrospective „Peter Weibel - Media Rebel Warning! This exposition can change your life.“ Peter Weibel, media artist, actor, theorist, musician and museum director and awarded with the Oskar Kokoschka Prize 2014 ranked in the 1960s and 1970s among Austria’s ‘rebels’. The exhibition at the 21er Haus conveys the individual chapters of Weibel’s wide spanned artistic œuvre.
Das 21er Haus zeigt zu Peter Weibels 70stem Geburtstag die große Retrospektive „Peter Weibel - Medienrebell. Warnung! Diese Ausstellung kann Ihr Leben verändern.“ Der Medienkünstler, Schauspieler, Theoretiker, Musiker, Museumsleiter und Oskar-Kokoschka-Preisträger 2014 zählte in den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren zu den österreichischen „Rebellen“. Die Ausstellung im 21er Haus veranschaulicht die einzelnen Kapitel Weibels künstlerischen Schaffens.
