Located on the banks of one of Amsterdam's many canals is a building site with a difference. Architects are hoping to build Europe's first 3D-printed house: using a 3D printer ten times bigger than an ordinary one.
The structure is made of a bio-plastic heavily based on plant oil and reinforced with microfibres, which the project's founders say is waste-free and eco-friendly:

Hundreds of years after wealthy merchants began building the tall, narrow brick houses that have come to define Amsterdam's skyline, Dutch architects are updating the process for the 21st century: fabricating pieces of a canal house out of plastic with a giant 3-D printer and slotting them together like oversized Lego blocks. Rather, it is to discover and share the potential uses of 3-D printing in construction by creating new materials, trying out designs and testing building techniques to see what works.

Printing 3D houses in the Netherlands
Coming to a neighbourhood near you - a house built using 3D printing. Architects in Amsterdam are using this latest technology to build a full-sized home. Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba reports from Amsterdam.
DUS Architects builds 3D-printed micro home in Amsterdam
Dutch studio DUS Architects has 3D printed an eight-square-metre cabin and accompanying bathtub in Amsterdam, and is now inviting guests to stay overnight (+ slideshow).
DUS Architects used sustainable bio-plastic to create the 3D Print Urban Cabin, which is intended to demonstrate how additive manufacturing can offer solutions for temporary housing or disaster relief.
When the cabin is no longer needed, it can be destroyed and almost all the materials can be reused.
The building is a research into compact and sustainable dwelling solutions in urban environments, said the team.
3D printing techniques can be used particularly well for small temporary dwellings or in disaster areas, they said.
After use, the bio print material can be shredded entirely and re-printed into new designs.
The Amsterdam-based architecture studio is currently in the final stages of a project to build a full-size 3D-printed canal house. This smaller project offers an insight into what that structure will look like
A window punctures one end, while the other integrates both an entrance and a stepped porch seating area. Its walls are patterned with angular protrusions that create a three-dimensional surface, giving the building extra structural stability.
All of these surfaces are black, thanks to the bio-based 3D-printing filament – a product with linseed oil as its main component, which the architects have been developing with major consumer manufacturing company Henkel.
A small amount of concrete was also used, to provide a durable flooring surface. It infills a patterned grid, which extends out from the cabin to form a pebbled pathway across a small garden.
Entirely 3D printed with black coloured bio-based material, it showcases different types of facade ornament, form-optimisation techniques, and smart solutions for insulation and material consumption, said the team.

Netherlands to build world's first commercial 3D printed houses
Five houses will be 3D printed in Meerhoven, a residential area of Eindhoven in the Netherlands. The homes will be made to different sizes, specifications and look like large boulders. To complete the printing, developers created stable shape concrete, and injected wire reinforcements into each layer, making the final structure safe and sturdy. The project is the world's first commercial housing initiative to use 3D printed concrete.

Angels Canal House in Amsterdam
This recently renovated original canal house combined with a studio is situated in the Canal Belt and lies between the Herengracht and the Singel, two of the most central canals in Amsterdam. Experience an exquisite blend of seventeenth century Amsterdam and a light modern style in this wonderful house.
The 100m2 apartment covers the whole building and counts four floors. It is fully furnished in a mixture between the warm classic style of seventeenth century Amsterdam and a light modern style. It has three small, but cosy bedrooms with the original wooden ceilings and two bathrooms.
The seventeenth century style does mean that the stairs are quite steep and narrow, but walking up those tiny stairs is a completely Dutch experience in itself. Please be aware that the height on the second floor is only 1.85 cm! So be careful not to bump your head!

AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS — Dutch startup company MX3D has announced plans to build the world's first 3-D printed bridge across an Amsterdam canal. The company hopes the technique could become standard on future construction projects.
The company has invented robotic printers that weld steel structures using 3-D technology. The process involves robotic arm printers walking across the canal as it slides along the bridge's edges, allowing the structure that has already been printed to support the weight of the robots.
The robotic arms work by heating metal to 1,500 degrees Celsius (around 2,700 degrees Fahrenheit) and welding the structure drop-by-drop, according to MX3D. A computer program plots the design of the structure.
Company representatives hope the bridge in Amsterdam will pave the way for using the same technique on construction sites, especially those involving dangerous processes such as construction on high buildings.

A Dutch startup has unveiled plans to build the world’s first 3D-printed bridge across an Amsterdam canal. It will be the first use of a technique that could become standard on future construction sites. Engineering startup company MX3D said in a statement that the company will use robotic printers “that can ‘draw’ steel structures in 3D to print a pedestrian bridge over water in the center of Amsterdam. The company hopes to kick off the project by September. Amsterdam is world-famous for its seemingly countless canals and bridges.
