We search for and find an old site of bridge ruins under Elk City Lake. The lake has been dry for a long time now which presents a unique opportunity to explore. Before the lake was built, original Route 66 ran right through the middle of it. We uncover some of the secrets.
Route 66 Missouri Road Trip RV Living On The Road In A GMC Motorhome
RV living on the road in 2016 brings us to Springfield, MO where we begin our route 66 road trip through Missouri enjoying GMC motorhome living. In this full time RV living on the road video we start off the morning with our wake me up green tea, prior to driving the car into Springfield, MO.
Once in Springfield our first route 66 stop is at the original Steak & Shake that is on the National List of Historical Places. When we got there to place was packed, so we sat at the front bar that looked over into the kitchen like the old time 1950s diners. Carolina had a sandwich specially made for her with a fried egg instead of meat. I ordered the ground sirlon foot long chili Cheese dog paired with an old school style milk shake.
After leaving the historical Steak & Shake we headed to Park Central Square to see the rock fountain and the other building listed on the National List of Historical Places, such as the Gillioz Theatre and the Mosque found along historical route 66 bypass.
After getting done sight seeing in downtown we headed to link back up to old route 66 on our way to Carthage, Missouri. On our way to Carthage we passed through the ghost town of Avilla, MO before arriving at the Gay Parita Station sporting a Sinclair gas sign about 3 miles past Halltown. While at the old cottage style petro station I popped into the gift shop and bought myself a new route 66 hat.
Then we got back into the car to complete the rest of the journey to Carthage along the well preserved section of old route 66 that runs along side I-44. Once in Carthage we stopped to check out the court house square where I pulled out the phantom 3 drone to shoot some video of the elaborate court house. Before leaving we grabbed a bite to eat in the route 66 deli.
We then headed out the remainder of old route 66 left in Missouri to stop off in Webb City where the giant praying hands are located. While there I took it as a chance to do my second ever Point of Interest video shoot with the Phantom 3 drone. Before hoping back on the highway for Joplin, MO.
So far we are really enjoying the road trip along route 66 living in an RV that is just as vintage as the highway itself. There is nothing like doing the route 66 tourist thing in a classic GMC motorhome.

Abandoned Railroad Station in Joplin, Missouri 3/24/18
While on a road trip down Route 66 last week, I stumbled across an amazing find just outside downtown Joplin, Missouri. Driving towards downtown, I looked to my left and saw what appeared to be a huge abandoned structure behind the post office. Knowing there were railroad tracks nearby, I wondered if it was a train station. Sure enough, I was right! The building is Joplin's Union Depot, completed in 1911, and served trains on the Kansas City Southern and Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroads. When the last passenger train left Joplin in 1969, the station closed and has been empty ever since. For the last 20 years, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources has owned the building, looking for a buyer. As things stand today, the DNR won't sell the building to anyone who would tear it down - they'd like to have someone restore and revitalize it - providing the group purchasing it has the funds to follow through. So far, that hasn't happened, but hopefully it does soon, otherwise the building will be too far gone to save.
My video begins at what looks to be one of the original entrances to the station, at street level just off Route 66. The overgrown driveway curves down and around to the station. I believe there was another driveway that led away from the north side as well. I walked around the station, and stood on one of the old station platforms where the tracks once ran. Today just one track remains, Kansas City Southern's mainline between Kansas City to the south, and is far away from the station complex itself.
I hope you enjoyed this video. I have many more train-related videos, including railfanning compilations from other Midwest towns, available to watch on my YouTube channel. Subscribe here:

SUMMARY
=======
Jackson, officially the City of Jackson, is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is one of two county seats of Hinds County, along with Raymond, Mississippi. The city of Jackson also includes around 3,000 acres comprising Jackson-Medgar Evers International Airport in Rankin County and a small portion of Madison County. The city's population was estimated to be 165,072 in 2017, a decline from 173,514 in 2010. The city sits on the Pearl River and is located in the greater Jackson Prairie region of Mississippi.
Founded in 1821 as the site for a new state capital, the city is named after General Andrew Jackson, who was honored for his role in the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812 and would later serve as U.S. president. Following the nearby Battle of Vicksburg in 1863 during the American Civil War, Union forces under the command of General William Tecumseh Sherman began the Siege of Jackson and the city was subsequently burned.During the 1920s, Jackson surpassed Meridian to become the most populous city in the state following a speculative natural gas boom in the region. The current slogan for the city is The City with Soul. It has had numerous musicians prominent in blues, gospel, folk, and jazz.
Jackson is the anchor for the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is the state's largest metropolitan area with a 2016 population of 579,332, about one-fifth of Mississippi's population.
