Drew Hale performing his song Armageddon live
By Allison Quatrini
As we focus this issue on our country's freedoms and honoring those who defend them, it seems only fitting that we came across Drew Hale. A Traverse City local singer/songwriter and the director of music at Bay Pointe church in Traverse City, Drew is a true patriot who draws his inspiration from our military and public servants. Living in Michigan a mere four years, Drew claims that he (and wife Emily) found a love and home here unlike anywhere else and many of his songs impart that sense of pride on his listeners.
Drew has been communicating through music for as long as he can remember. He started playing piano at age five, and sought out choirs and ensembles to sing with throughout grade school. In 7th grade, it was love at first sight when he picked up a guitar and started writing. His Latino family with rhythm in their souls, taught him how to find inspiration in the seemingly mundane, like sleeping in on a Saturday morning. Music is a language that Drew speaks perhaps more fluently than his own native Spanish and one through which he tells his stories.
Drew's song choices both originals and covers, seem to share themes of family, love and gratitude. He sings about Michigan sunsets, feeling small, and his wife Emily, who he cites as his primary muse. His ability to indulge in a feeling, whether joy, sorrow or appreciation, create a richness in his messages and make them easily relatable. He seems to love and feel love easily, and his music is very much about the simplicity of letting go. His style, he claims envelopes acoustic folk rock and bluegrass with hints of reggae, blues, and sometimes country. He revers James Taylor as the ultimate authority and directs aspiring guitarists to study him and his near perfection.
When Drew isn't rocking out on stage at Bay Pointe church, you can find him alongside John Pomeroy at Seven Monks Taproom, drawing a consistent crowd of followers, myself included. Their covers range from John Mayer to Jeff Buckley, but Drew's favorite place to perform is Crystal Mountain where you realize how small you are, how big the world is, and how great the one who must be who made it all. He is also busy promoting his latest album titled Eyes Closed Tight, which again illustrates the freedom of 'throwing caution to the wind'. He is making his mark on the Traverse City music lovers through both worship and watering hole, and I speak for all of the Traverse Citians when I say, We are as lucky to have you as you are to have us. We wish Drew the best of luck and will continue to support and applaud his very positive message.
