The 921 earthquake occurred at 1:47am local time on Tuesday, September 21, 1999. 2,415 people were killed, 11,305 injured, and NT$300 billion worth of damage was done. It was the second-deadliest quake in recorded history in Taiwan, after the 1935 Hsinchu-Taichung earthquake.

921地震教育園區 / 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan
1999年9月21日清晨1時47分，台灣中部發生芮氏規模7.3的強烈地震，造成的傷亡及財物損失為近百年來臺灣最大的地震災害之一。
為提醒大眾重視防震及救災措施，九二一地震發生後，政府及學者專家認為霧峰鄉光復國中基地中的斷層錯動、校舍倒塌、河床隆起等地貌，在幾個候選地點中條件最好震後地貌保存完整。 便於光復國中現址，規劃改建「地震紀念博物館」，以保存地震原址、記錄地震史實，並提供社會大眾及學校有關地震教育之活教材，後於2001年2月13日正式定名為「九二一地震教育園區」，以彰顯其紀念及教育意義。

九二一地震教育園区は国立自然科学博物館により建設・運営が行なわれている。2004年9月21日に九二一地震5周年の記念日に活断層の遺跡を展示する車籠埔断層館が完成し、一般の民衆に開放されました。地震に関する資料の展示と住民への防災意識啓蒙を目的として建設された博物館です。
At 1:47 a.m. on September 21, 1999, Taiwan experienced one of its worst natural disasters of the past century-- a 7.3-magnitude earthquake that devastated the central part of the island. The 921 earthquake museum of Taiwan located in Wufeng County conserved the damage caused by Chi-Chi earthquake such as collapsed school buildings, fault rupture and elevation of riverbank. And thus the museum is a precious teaching material for natural science. All the construction of the museum was done by September 2007, and it included Chelungpu Fault Gallery, Earthquake Engineering Hall, Image Gallery, Disaster Prevention Hall, and Reconstruction Records Hall.
位于台中市雾峰区的「国立自然科学博物馆921地震教育园区」是全球难得一见的自然科学活教材，它完整地保存了1999年9月21日凌晨1点47分，芮氏规模7.3的强烈地震后所造成的断层错动、校舍倒塌、河床隆起等地震遗址。全区所有建设于2007年9月完成，共有车笼埔断层保留馆、地震工程教育馆、影像馆、防灾教育馆及重建记录馆等展馆。除了有遗址保存、自然科学、人文、历史记录等等不同面向展示，建筑更是园区一大特色。
为凸显断层经过所造成的地景与校舍毁坏，园区之建筑将展示馆与原毁损校舍整合为一，更一致的表达断层在线地层变动所造成的影响，用建筑的针、隐藏于大地的线，将此地震裂缝缝合。全区建筑利用视觉角度求取相对高层，并依断层落差值求取安全退缩距离，因此建筑原则随断层线走，再依地形地貌调整，自然形成独立却相互连结的空间，赋予观者不同空间的体验。
