Nighttime INDIAN STREET FOOD Tour of Shobhabazar and Shyambazar | Kolkata, India
November of 2018 was an amazing month for me, as I spent most of it exploring the sights, sounds, and tastes of India for the second time in less than a year. After my 18-day adventure through seven different cities, I’ve found myself even more enthralled with this country’s culture, languages, people, and of course, its food. This place is absolutely magical. And I’m so glad I got to explore it all with my travel buddy Sam from Samuel & Audrey.

Our third day in Kolkata continued with an out-of-this-world nighttime street food tour of the city’s Shobhabazar and Shyambazar neighorhoods, led by my new friend Avik from A Chef’s Tour.
Check out the tour here:
Come and join the three of us as we sample even more incredible Indian food in Kolkata!
My Film Making Kit ►
Our adventure began at the New Market, where I met lots of friendly vendors along the tight, bustling lanes. Avik took us to a small stall where we received blessings to ensure that the forces were on our side for our food tour. This country is so spiritual and I love it!
We officially kicked off our food tour in Shyambazar, and right away, we started with a pomegranate lassi, a fruity version of the popular, yogurt-based drink at a spot that has been around for 50 years and 4 generations. It wasn’t as thick as a regular lassi and was like a refreshing cross between a lassi and a juice.
Our first food was mutton, or baby goat, which I had with a paratha and onions. The mutton had been cooking in its own juices for eight hours and was so tender, buttery, and flavorful. It wasn’t too spicy but had a nice tingle to it and I could taste a lot of pepper. One of the best goat dishes I’ve ever had in my life! It was finger-licking good!
Next, we stopped at Bhojohori Manna for some Bengali fine dining. There, we had a massive prawn, a fish in a mustard gravy, a coconut-based curry, and rice. The prawn was so buttery it fell apart in my mouth and the curry reminded me of a light version of the curry that comes with butter chicken. The fish was super light and I loved the skin!
After that, we made our way to Shobhabazar. On our way, I tried a chaat that was a fried mixture of peanuts, lentils, onions, coriander, and chutney. It was crunchy, spicy, and refreshing, and a fantastic palette cleanser!
Next was Puchka, or the Kolkatan name for one of my favorite Indian dishes, Pani Puri. This kind contained a soup-like sauce and a potato mash and was a flavor explosion in my mouth! I couldn’t stop eating them!
Our next stop was Allen Kitchen, which has been open for over 125 years. I dove right into their fried prawns with ghee and mustard, which was fantastic! The combination of the prawns, ghee, and mustard was delicious. It was crunchy on the outside, soft in the middle, and wasn’t greasy at all!
We walked through one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods, which felt almost like an ancient city, to find a stand selling a light, crunchy, and airy savory puffed rice mixture that was filled with spices. It was amazing!
Next, we hopped on a bus, which was a fun and interesting experience in itself, and rode it to College Street, which is where the largest second-hand open-air book market is located. But instead of revisiting the book market, which I’d seen the day before, we finished off our tour with a fatty, sugary, and delicious Jalebi!
This food tour was outstanding! I had so many mouthwatering dishes that blew my mind. I have to give a huge thanks to Avik and A Chef’s Tour for taking us on this unforgettable food tour of Kolkata!

Bengali Food - Incredible Seafood Feast at Bhojohori Manna in Kolkata, India
Amazing Bengali food in Kolkata, India!

When I was in Kolkata, India, one of my main motivations was to eat a proper Bengali seafood meal, so one evening I headed over to a restaurant known as Bhojohori Manna Restaurant to partake in what turned out to be one of my favorite meals in all of India. There are a number of different locations around India actually and throughout Kolkata, but the location I found was not far from the chaotic Esplanade intersections in the central part of the city.
Though I was eager to eat Bengali food, I really had no clue what I was going to order, so luckily the staff were all very friendly and made recommendations for dishes they thought I would enjoy. They chose some good dishes and soon a fleet of Bengali seafood dishes appeared on my table, all ready to be devoured. My hands washed I couldn't wait any longer and I started to dig into the Bhojohori Manna feast.
Bhetki Kalia is a fish curry paired with a potato and it was in a sweet coconut based curry. It was insanely flavorful and extremely delicious. The fish was soft yet it remained firm at the same time. Next there was Mochar Ghonto, a banana flower salad. Now at the time of eating it I honestly had no idea what it was until coming back to my computer and doing a little research to find out it was banana flower. It was creamy and super delicious - I thought it sort of tasted like jackfruit curry. It was spiced nicely and went well with my plate of rice. Next up was the Jumbo Chingri Malaikari, a huge prawn that was curried in a highly pleasant sauce. After removing the shell from the prawn, the meat just melted in my mouth and the sauce was beautiful. The Murgir Jhol was just a Bengali chicken curry, and while it wasn't seafood like the other dishes, it sure was wonderful too. But of all the Bengali food we order at Bhojohori Manna, the dish that stuck out the most to me was Medium Kankrajhai, the crab curry. I almost couldn't believe how good it was. It was basically all the flavors I could ever want all condensed onto pieces of succulent crab. It was indeed a heavenly dish that I won't ever forget!
There were 2 of us and our total bill came to 700 Rupees which is about $13 - but for the quality and the quantity, this was a wonderful deal. So while I had a few Bengali food meals, my favorite was the seafood feast I enjoyed at Bhojohori Manna. If you go to Kolkata, I would highly recommend this restaurant. It's a little cramped and small, but they serve top notch local style cuisine!
Thank you for watching!

Kolkata Egg Roll Recipe | Durga Pujo Special | Calcutta Style Egg Kathi Roll | Kolkata Street Food
Egg roll is not strictly a kathi roll (more on that later). Yet, it is Kolkata's most popular street food. Folks in Calcutta will happily eat egg rolls for lunch, snack, or dinner. In this recipe we show you the best way to make a dough for the kathi roll that yields a flaky yet soft paratha for the roll. We also give you a couple of variations on the filling.
Although the term kathi roll is indiscriminately used now for all edibles that have a wrap and a filling, it is not accurate. A kathi roll has a fried, flaky, paratha wrap, and a filling of meat skewered on a kathi (or stick). The egg roll, however delicious, doesn't have a filling cooked on a kathi. So, it is not a kathi roll.

WONTON NOODLES! Indian Chinese Street Food in CHINATOWN Kolkata India
Ever since arriving in India I was told that I must try some Indian Chinese food which is quite different than the typical Chinese food I've had all my life. So I went to Chinatown in Kolkata India to try some dumplings, noodles and spicy chicken.
The Chinatown in India was not what I expected, mainly because there were not that many Chinese people. Also the food does taste like a very unique mix of Indian and Chinese cuisine.
We first went to Territy Bazar which is in Chinatown and it's a market that is open very very early and closes soon as the food is sold out.
