GOOD MORNING AMERICA'S HOMEPAGE:
Inside Juvenile Detention
As recently as 2005, the state of Virginia had eight centers like Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Facility, housing more than 1,300 delinquent youth. But by 2017, after a series of reforms, that number had shrunk to one.
“It's not that you can't do good work here,” said Andy Block, who, since 2014, has served as the juvenile-justice department’s director. “But the place itself and the design and the size and the location are barriers to doing good work.” Block and others are working to close Bon Air and replace it with something that reflects the juvenile justice reforms that have taken hold in Virginia and across the country—a system that once focused on confinement is now dedicated to rehabilitation. In recent years, more than 70 percent of Virginia's juvenile inmates were rearrested within three years of their release.*
Read more on The Atlantic:
*This documentary originally stated that Virginia has one of the highest recidivism rates in the country. This characterization was based on incomplete data. The documentary also stated that the three-year rearrest rate for current Bon Air inmates would be 74 percent. This was the rate for former juvenile inmates in Virginia in 2014. We regret the errors.

IMPEACHMENT TRIAL LIVE: White House legal team mounts Trump defense in Senate – 1/27/2020
U.S. Senate: Impeachment Trial (Day 7)
The Senate impeachment trial of President Trump continues with opening arguments by the President’s defense team.
Impeachment trial of President Trump | Jan. 27, 2020 (FULL LIVE STREAM)
The House managers wrapped up their arguments against President Trump on Jan. 24. Trump’s team, including lawyers Pat Cipollone and Jay Sekulow, now has 24 hours to present their case. After Trump’s lawyers conclude their presentation, senators will have an opportunity to submit questions to both sides in writing. Following that, debate will turn to whether to call witnesses and subpoena documents.
Trump was impeached by the House of Representatives in December for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Impeachment does not mean that the president has been removed from office. In the next phase, the Senate must hold a trial to make that determination. A Senate impeachment trial has happened only two other times in American history and once in the modern era. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son.

Cleveland County-The Epic History
Cleveland County -The Epic History is a segment of Carl White's Life in the Carolinas TV Show, which first aired in syndication on January 24, 2015.
Carl first provides an enthralling history lesson about the namesake of the county, Col. Benjamin Cleveland, a militia leader of the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780. Using his rich skills of storytelling and the accompanying video battle reenactments, Carl brings Col. Cleveland's leadership and heroism to life with realism and charm.
Next, Carl takes us to the Webbley House located in the county seat of Shelby. This was the home of O Max Gardner, former governor of NC. Gardner's wife Fay Lamar Webb was the daughter of James L Webb and niece of Congressman Edwin Y Webb. Carl discusses several of the prestigious state and national political leaders from Cleveland County NC, including Congressman, Governor, and Senator Clyde Hoey and Tim Moore of King's Mountain, recently appointed Speaker of the NC General Assembly.
Finally, we get a fly-on-the-wall insider's view of the textile industry when Carl takes us with him on his visit to STI, a leader of furniture upholstery located in King's Mountain. He interviews John Kay, president of STI on the floor of the factory, and asks all the questions we'd ask if we were with him. It is an informative and very entertaining look behind the scenes of a fascinating industry.

SPECIAL REPORT: Fallen Firefighter Lives on as Animated Hero - Eric Alvarez
Fallen Hendersonville firefighter Ronnie Dowell died in 2010 but lives on today as Rescue Ronnie, an animated hero that teaches kids about fire safety, and his department hasn't stopped fighting for the family he left behind.Rescue Ronnie is a Midstate hero.Rescue Ronnie says remember to play safe and practice fire safety every
day, reads the first page of the Rescue Ronnie coloring and activity
book. He's based on beloved firefighter Ronnie Dowell, who battled flames for the Hendersonville fire department for 25 years. He was a great big guy, this guy is like a big football player, unbelievable physical strength, said Jamie Steele, Hendersonville fire chief. His fellow firefighters say Dowell was the perfect guy for this learn not to burn coloring book...designed to teach kids about fire safetyI think immortalized is probably the best word because Ronnie was all about kids, said Randy Porter, captain. He loved doing the classes with the kids he loved interacting with them.Inside the pages of the coloring book, Rescue Ronnie, is the ideal hero, he's strong, smart and fearless. Out in the real-world, Ronnie Dowell was also a hero, but unfortunately, wasn't unstoppable...Losing a child, there's nothing like it, said Beulah Dowell, Ronnie Dowell's mother.Christmas day 2010, Ronnie left work feeling sick...and what started as pain and nausea ended in a deadly heart attack two days later...It's like there's an empty place within my heart, Beulah Dowell said. I haven't got over it and i don't think i ever will.As a firefighter Dowell was exposed to smoke and toxins for years, and his family still believes the job may have caused his death. When they told me he had passed I was like...'I knew it.' said Nita Dowell, Ronnie's sister,Because Dowell didn't technically die on the job, his family received only $50,000 from his life insurance policy.Had Ronnie been deemed line of duty benefit, then his family would have collected the federal line of duty death which would have been approximately $4000,000, Steele said.Chief Steele says other states would have classified Dowell as a line of duty death and he's working with other fire chiefs to bring similar legislation to Tennessee, so families like Dowell's are taken care of.It is something that we've got to work on state-wide, Steele said. It's something that the chief's association has been working on. It's just something we need to change. And while those that knew him best to fight on behalf of the real Ronnies family, Rescue Ronnie continues to prevent fires, teaching one child at a time.I'm sorry about his passing,Porter said. We're all terribly saddened by it but if we had to have a character to live on through our fire prevention program you couldn't have a better one than Ronnie.

Christmas lights (also known informally as fairy lights) are lights used for decoration in preparation for Christmas and for display throughout Christmastide. The custom goes back to the use of candles to decorate the Christmas tree in Christian homes in early modern Germany.[1][2] Christmas trees displayed publicly and illuminated with electric lights became popular in the early 20th century. By the mid-20th century, it became customary to display strings of electric lights as along streets and on buildings Christmas decorations detached from the Christmas tree itself. In the United States, it became popular to outline private homes with such Christmas lights in tract housing beginning in the 1960s. By the late 20th century, the custom had also been adopted in non-western countries, notably in Japan and Hong Kong.
In many countries, such as Sweden, people start to set up their Christmas lights, as well as other Christmas decorations, on the first day of Advent.[3][4] In the Western Christian world, the two traditional days when Christmas lights are removed are Twelfth Night and Candlemas, the latter of which ends the Christmas-Epiphany season in some denominations.[5] Leaving the decorations up beyond Candlemas is historically considered to be inauspicious.
The Christmas tree was adopted in upper-class homes in 18th-century Germany, where it was occasionally decorated with candles, which at the time was a comparatively expensive light source. Candles for the tree were glued with melted wax to a tree branch or attached by pins. Around 1890, candleholders were first used for Christmas candles. Between 1902 and 1914, small lanterns and glass balls to hold the candles started to be used. Early electric Christmas lights were introduced with electrification, beginning in the 1880s.
The illuminated Christmas tree became established in the United Kingdom during Queen Victoria's reign, and through emigration spread to North America and Australia. In her journal for Christmas Eve 1832, the delighted 13-year-old princess wrote, After dinner.. we then went into the drawing-room near the dining-room. There were two large round tables on which were placed two trees hung with lights and sugar ornaments. All the presents being placed round the trees.[7] Until the availability of inexpensive electrical power in the early twentieth century, miniature candles were commonly (and in some cultures still are) used.
In the United Kingdom, electrically powered Christmas lights are generally known as fairy lights. In 1881, the Savoy Theatre, London was the first building in the world to be lit entirely by electricity.[8] Sir Joseph Swan, inventor of the incandescent light bulb, supplied about 1,200 Swan incandescent lamps, and a year later, the Savoy owner Richard D'Oyly Carte equipped the principal fairies with miniature lighting supplied by the Swan United Electric Lamp Company, for the opening night of the Gilbert and Sullivan opera Iolanthe on 25 November 1882.[9] The term 'fairy lights', describing 'a small coloured light used in illuminations' had already entered English:[10] its usage for a string of electrically powered Christmas lights has been common in the UK ever since.[11]
The first known electrically illuminated Christmas tree was the creation of Edward H. Johnson, an associate of inventor Thomas Edison. While he was vice president of the Edison Electric Light Company, a predecessor of today's Con Edison electric utility, he had Christmas tree light bulbs especially made for him. He proudly displayed his Christmas tree, which was hand-wired with 80 red, white and blue electric incandescent light bulbs the size of walnuts, on December 22, 1882 at his home on Fifth Avenue in New York City. Local newspapers ignored the story, seeing it as a publicity stunt. However, it was published by a Detroit newspaper reporter, and Johnson has become widely regarded as the Father of Electric Christmas Tree Lights. By 1900, businesses started stringing up Christmas lights behind their windows.[12] Christmas lights were too expensive for the average person; as such, electric Christmas lights did not become the majority replacement for candles until 1930.[13]
In 1895, U.S. President Grover Cleveland proudly sponsored the first electrically lit Christmas tree in the White House. It was a huge specimen, featuring more than a hundred multicolored lights. The first commercially produced Christmas tree lamps were manufactured in strings of multiples of eight sockets by the General Electric Co. of Harrison, New Jersey. Each socket took a miniature two-candela carbon-filament lamp.
