A Deep Blue Dive in Key Colony Beach in Marathon IS CLOSED.
The dive shop suffered storm surge damage as did a lot of Key Colony Beach. I spoke with the owners of Key Colony Beach Marina who said they do not expect the dive shop to be in operation until season (December).
Sparkys restaurant is not expected to be open until December as well.
The marina store is open and has fuel but not bait currently.
The fishing charters that normally work right now are available for charters and the rest will be chartering in December.

This is the first video to be added to a new playlist entitled Where can I dive in the Florida Keys after Irma. I've called almost every dive shop in the Keys other than Key West (I will get to that). Most of the dive shops are closed in the middle and lower Keys. There are a couple open in Key Largo, 2 in Marathon and I think a couple in Key West. Check back in a couple days for the full scoop.
Halls starts taking dives out this Sunday, Oct. 15, 2017. Call them for more information: 1 800-331-4255

Florida Keys Divers Witness Sex on the Reef
Divers in the Florida Keys have become subsea voyeurs of sort, witnessing a fascinating yet fragile annual reproductive phenomenon on coral reefs.
Coral spawning occurs in August and September a few days after the full moon.
Continued survival of coral reefs aroudn the world is dependent upon the reproductive strategy among boulder corals like brain and star corals, as well as elkhorn and staghorn branching corals.
Millions of gametes, or reproductive cells, are released underwater in a synchronized mass-spawning exchange, enabling the eggs and sperm to enter the water over a broad geographic area to maximize the chances of fertilization.
When egg and sperm unite, newly formed larvae, or planulae, ascend to the surface to free-float in the current for days or sometimes weeks. Some planulae settle to the bottom to grow into polyps and potentially form coral colonies.
In the Keys, a number of dive shops stage special trips to view the spectacle that many describe as an upside-down underwater snowstorm.
