Cambridge students get professional theatre training
Actors such as Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton and Sir Ian McKellen earned some of their first professional acting experiences with the Marlowe Society. This year, William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing will brought to the Cambridge Arts Theatre by the students with the help of professional director Richard Beecham.

Arcadia is without a doubt one of the finest works of twentieth century British theatre, and this May the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatics Club is pleased to present Tom Stoppard's undisputed masterpiece at the ADC theatre.
Effortlessly weaving back and forth across two time periods, Arcadia follows the lives of an aristocratic family and the guests of Sidley Park as they grapple with the birth of Romanticism, Newtonian mathematics and 'carnal embrace'.
Set in an English stately home, Arcadia first draws us into the highly spirited 19th century and introduces us to the precocious young Thomasina and her tutor Septimus -- a former schoolmate of Lord Byron. Whilst Thomasina attempts to untangle a curious mathematical anomaly, an unfortunate incident in a gazebo sparks a riotous sex-farce amongst the adult guests that can only end badly. In the present day, we encounter rival academics, Bernard and Hannah, as they attempt to untangle the mystery surrounding Byron's visit to Sidley Park.
As with all of Tom Stoppard's plays, Arcadia is intellectually demanding and deals with a broad range of complex material - from thermodynamics to the mechanics of love. The hard thing about directing Stoppard is figuring out how to combine it's humor with the undeniable gravity of the intellectual content says Director Charlie Parham, but when you've finally managed to squeeze chaos theory and sexual congress into the same thought, you know you've got somewhere.
The greatest challenge for any production of Arcadia is to convincingly portray Stoppard's vision for the vibrant collision of past and present, and it is safe to say that the CUADC team has stepped up to the plate. The chance to experiment with ways to suggest the passing of time has forced us all to think creatively, says Producer Simon Johnson.
Most importantly, Arcadia brings together the sciences and the arts in a play that fuses intellectual vigour with the best of British comic drama.

CUADC is Cambridge University's foremost theatre company and the resident company at the ADC Theatre. Founded in 1855, it boasts many talented and successful alumni, such as Sir Ian McKellen, Sam Mendes and Emma Thompson.
The ADC Theatre, Cambridge is Britain's oldest University playhouse. Plays have been performed on the site of the Theatre since 1855, when the Cambridge University Amateur Dramatic Club was founded, and the society met in the back room of a hotel. Whilst every performer and technician is an unpaid volunteer, the impressive alumni list proves how many have gone on to great success in the theatre industry. The ADC presents two shows every evening during university term, as well as a range of other programming outside of term from touring and local drama groups.
