Animals at War ANZAC Cottage 2019

In honour of World Animal Remembrance Month, Friends of ANZAC Cottage, in conjunction with the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation ( who also donated the plaque) held a commemorative service to acknowledge and to pay tribute to these wonderful defence personell.

Activities included story-time for children and poppy making
The Australian 10th Light Horse Rockingham troop brought along a horse, a donkey and a dog, and the United Districts Racing Pigeon Club released a host of pigeons.

ANZAC Cottage was built in one day on February 12, 1916 by the community of Mount Hawthorn as a home for John Porter - a returned wounded soldier - and his family and as a memorial for those who lost their lives in the tragic Gallipoli landing.

The ambitious project was initiated by the Mount Hawthorn Progress Association and supported eagerly and enthusiastically by the community with donations and contributions made to ensure that the cottage that was to be built would be a suitable memorial for the Gallipoli veterans.

One hundred years later, the cottage still stands and commands respect from all who visit it.

I am proud to have been asked by my friends at Anzac Cottage to write this special song to celebrate the centenary of this magnificent building. I hope you enjoy the song.

On the 12th of February 1916, a community banded together to build a home for a wounded Gallipoli soldier. To this day, the little cottage in Mount Hawthorn stands as a symbol of family, community and the ANZAC Spirit. We speak with Anne, the caretaker and descendant of this historical landmark.
