Route 66 Part 9 - New Mexico To Winslow Arizona “Standin On The Corner”
Driving Route 66 from Santa Fe to Winslow, Arizona. Join us for part 9 of our Route 66 road trip along the Mother Road.
From Santa Fe we travel through the mining town of Grants New Mexico, across the Continental Divide and into Gallup New Mexico.
Stopping for a ‘hot’ chilli at the historic El Rancho Hotel. The famous Route 66 landmark hotel was opened by the brother of film director D.W. Griffith. It was the home of the movie stars throughout the 1930s and 1940s who filmed Westerns in the area.
Crossing over into Arizona we stop at the Petrified Forest National Park and drive the 28 miles through the Painted Desert and Petrified Wood. There is also a section of the old Route 66 complete with a rusty old 1932 Studebaker exhibit.
We then continue past the Wigwam hotel in Holbrook, past the Jack Rabbit Trading Post (which was closed by the time we goth there) into Winslow, Arizona.
Yes, we were ‘Standin’ On The Corner In Winslow Arizona’ next to the Flatbed Ford and the statues of the song writers Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne.
We spend the night at the historic La Posada Hotel in Winslow.
Read more about the hotel
Next time, we drive through Arizona and take a side trip to Sedona.

Standin’ On the Corner In Winslow Arizona! - Route 66 Quick Vlog From The Road Part 11
Part 11 of the Route 66 road trip and we’re ‘Standin’ on the corner in Winslow Arizona’
We check out the famous corner in Winslow Arizona complete with its Flat Bed Ford and giant Route 66 shield before we head off to Sedona.
La Posada Hotel in Winslow, AZ is definitely worth staying at and is a classic on Route 66 as well as still being a stop for the Amtrak trains.
Our first stop after leaving Winslow was the giant Meteor crater in the middle of the desert. It was then onto the derelict Route 66 gas stations and trading posts of Two Guns and Twin Arrows.
Stopped for lunch in Flagstaff before heading off Route 66 the dramatic red rocks and fir tree forests of Sedona. Although not on the route it is only an hours drive and highly recommended for the dramatic scenery.
Next stop will be Williams and The Grand Canyon.

Winslow, AZ - Meteor Crater
During our 'road trip to the west', we reached Winslow. It was quite surprising to get to the crater/ Meteor Crater is a meteorite impact crater located approximately 43 miles (69 km) east of Flagstaff, near Winslow in the northern Arizona desert of the United States. Because the US Department of the Interior Division of Names commonly recognizes names of natural features derived from the nearest post office, the feature acquired the name of Meteor Crater from the nearby post office named Meteor.[2] The site was formerly known as the Canyon Diablo Crater, and the meteorite that created the crater is officially called the Canyon Diablo Meteorite, the name that is on all officially labelled fragments of the meteorite. Scientists refer to the crater as Barringer Crater in honor of Daniel Barringer who was first to suggest that it was produced by meteorite impact. The crater is privately owned by the Barringer family through their Barringer Crater Company,[3] which proclaims it to be the first proven, best-preserved meteorite crater on earth.

TWIN ARROWS TRADING POST & CAFE - Route 66 - August 13, 1995
NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED
August 13, 1995
22 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona, my sister, Victoria Reichardt Lima and I stop at an iconic Route 66 business in operation since 1948. Two years prior while on another road trip, my friend, Eric Wittman and I had breakfast in the Cafe. In 1995 it had closed down for good and the struggling trading post would follw just three years later in 1998.
The complex is now in a sad state of decay and neglect with rampant vandalism. The once thriving locale probably doesn't have much time left before it is completely demolished.

TWIN ARROWS CAFE & TRADING POST
Route 66
On the second of four road trips from southern California in my 1959 Cadillac on Route 66, my buddy Eric Wittman and I experienced the sights, smells and sounds of having breakfast in an original Valentine diner located at the iconic 'Twin Arrows Trading Post & Cafe' 23 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona on Route 66. The gal working behind the counter of the compact eatery really earned her wage as she not only took the order but poured the coffee, cooked and served the food, washed the dishes and took the money for the bill.
The struggling business was forced to shutter it's doors in 1995, just two years after our visit and since then has unfortunately been left to deteriorate and be vandalized.

Mom and the baby rattlers, Jackrabbit Trading Post, Route 66
October 8, 2013, AZ Route 66 - With the help of Jackrabbit Trading Post co-owner Antonio Jaquez, I convinced my mom to check out the baby rattlers, a classic roadside gimmick. I think she really knew all along.
I bought one of the cool yellow and black shirts as I've loved the somewhat sinister-looking jackrabbit since my first Route 66 trip about 40 years ago.

Fort Bridger State Historic Site
Fort Bridger State Historic Site can be reached by taking Interstate 80, Exit 34 then going approximately 3 miles to the town of Ft.Bridger. The site is on the south side of the highway behind the bronze statue of Jim Bridger.
Established by Jim Bridger and Louis Vasquez in 1843 as an emigrant supply stop along the Oregon Trail. It was obtained by the Mormons in the early 1850s, and then became a military outpost in 1858. In 1933, the property was dedicated as a Wyoming Historical Landmark and Museum.
There are several restored historical buildings from the military time period, a reconstructed of the trading post operated by Jim Bridger, and an interpretive archaeological site containing the base of the cobble rock wall built by the Mormons during their occupation of the fort. All of these locations are signed in Braille. In addition, a museum containing artifacts from the various different historical time periods is housed in the 1888 stone barracks building. There are gift shops in both the museum and the reconstructed trading post. There is no camping available at Fort Bridger. Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails is celebrating its' 75th Anniversary. wyoparks.org

The Navajo Indians | Navajo Indian Tribe | Navajo Nation:
The Navajo Indians are the largest federally recognized Native American Indian tribe in the United States. Their reservation is spread out through out the four corners of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.
The Navajo use the name Dine because it refers to a term from the Navajo language that means people. The first Navajo Indians lived in the western part of Canada a little over a thousand years ago. They belonged to an American Indian group called the Athapaskans. The Navajo Indian tribes began to travel south, and most settled along the Pacific Ocean. Their tribe today is called the Northwest Coast Indian Tribe.
The Navajo Indians who settled in southern Arizona and New Mexico then became the different Apache tribes. When they reached the Southwest, they began to learn a lot of things from the Pueblo Indians. They learned weaving, how to make clothing, and art. By the 1600s the Navajo had become capable of raising their own food, and making their own blankets, clothes etc. The Navajo Indians lived in homes called hogans, which were made from wooden poles, tree bark, and mud. The hogans were always made to face the east for sunlight. The Navajo Indian tribes made summer and winter hogans. The summer hogans would have one side of the home completely open. The winter hogans were built more weatherproof with mud, and partly stone.
Around 1610, Santa Fe, New Mexico was founded and became the most important town in the New Mexico colony. In 1851, the Americans built Fort Defiance, to stop the Navajo raids that took place between 1849 and 1851. General James Carleton became the commander of the American Troops in 1862. He had the plan to build a fort for the Navajo Indians and force them all to a reservation.
The fort became quite popular by the name of Fort Sumner. The Navajo Indians decided not to surrender, so by March of 1864 more than five thousand Navajos were being held by the soldiers as prisoners. They were forced to walk 300 miles to Fort Sumner in eastern New Mexico. This walk became a very important part of Navajo Nation history and is famously known as “The Long Walk.” The famous treaty of 1868 was signed giving them their own territory and freedom. Later in 1869, Fort Sumner was abandoned, and purchased by a rancher.
The Navajo Indian were hunters and gatherers until they came in contact with the Pueblos, and the Spanish. They then learned the techniques from the Pueblos and the Spanish to grow corn, beans and squash. They eventually got into trade, trading blankets they made from wool, clothing, and cattle. Navajo Indian men were the political leaders, hunters, and the warriors. The Navajo Indian women were the farmers; they tended the livestock, did most of the cooking and took care of the children.
The Navajos base their way of life on a belief that the physical and spiritual world blend together, and everything on earth is alive and their relative. They worship the winds, sun, and watercourses. The Navajo are also cautious about death, and rarely talk about it. The Navajo Indians have two big kinds of ceremonies; one is the Blessing Way, which keeps them on the path of wisdom and happiness. The second major kind of ceremony is the Enemy way. The Enemy Way is to discourage evil spirits and eliminate ghosts.
The Navajo reservation is currently the largest reservation in the United States, with over 200,000 people throughout their 27,000 acres. The Navajo Indian tribe is closely related to the Apache tribes. The Navajo Indian tribes are currently located in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado. Most of the tribes are still currently living in their traditional territory today. Today the capital of the Navajo Nation is located at Window Rock in Arizona. Window Rock currently contains the World War II memorial.

EXPLORING ROUTE 66 - TWIN ARROWS TRADING POST (2019)
EXPLORING ROUTE 66 - TWIN ARROWS TRADING POST (2019)
#corkboardtv #route66 #twinarrowstradingpost
Hello my peeps!
Driving up I40 (old route 66) east of Flagstaff Arizona I came across the Twin Arrows Trading Post ruins and decide to pull over and do a little exploring.
Brief history of the area...
The area in which Twin Arrows is located was inhabited by the Hopi and Navajo tribes. The Navajo fought against the Apaches in the area. The first setters to arrive in the area of European descent were the Spanish conquistadores. The area became part of Mexico when Mexico gained its independence from Spain.
The United States fought against Mexico in what is known as the Mexican–American War. The war ended officially when the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed and forced onto the remnant Mexican government. It specified its major consequence, the Mexican Cession of the northern territories of Alta California and Santa Fe de Nuevo México to the United States.
Old US 66 in Twin Arrows
Wagon roads routes between Flagstaff and Winslow were surveyed in the 1880s. The Atlantic and Pacific Railroad choose to build the railroad along it. The railway passed to the north of the modern alignment of the National Old Trails which would eventually become US 66. The U.S. Highway System established US 66 in 1926. US 66 served as a major path for those who migrated west during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. The road supported the economies of the communities through which it passed.
Traffic began to flow through the Twin Arrows area because Route 66 was aligned along the National Old Trails Road. A business named the Canyon Padre Trading Post, named for the gorge that cuts nearby, was established in the late 1940s in Twin Arrows. Business was slow for the store and diner until the owners changed its name to Twin Arrows Trading Post, inspired by nearby town of Two Guns and added a service station. Two 25-foot (7.6 m) giant arrows which were placed on the property were easily recognized by traveling motorist and the business began to flourish.
Decline
The Twin Arrows Trading Post began to fail with the construction of the Interstate 40 (I-40), because motorists no longer had to take US 66. Business for the Twin Arrows Trading Post began to decline and it was not long before the store/diner/service station/gift shop passed through the hands of various owners. This continued until 1995, when it was finally closed and abandoned. The land where Twin Arrows is located is in the Navajo and Hopi reservations and owned by the Twin Arrows Navajo Casino.
Give this a THUMPS UP and let me know what YOU think in the comments below.
Until I see you again...
Cheers,
Scott
