Graves Headstones Markers for the Dead - Aberdeen Cemetery - Aberdeen Washington - WAGNER ITC
Out and about in Aberdeen Washington. The Aberdeen Cemetery is the largest in the area.. A small portion of the cemetery was Fern Hill Cemetery.. Old stones there. There is a new Fern Hill Cemetery elsewhere now, so the name was dis-associated... Anyway.. Good session today.. Have a watch and like.. :)
Kurt Cobain Memorial Park, Aberdeen, WA
In June, 2016, my girlfriend and I rented a car and drove from LA to Seattle up the beautiful Pacific cost. Along the way we took a detour and stopped off for a couple of nights in Kurt Cobain's home town. Here we are, underneath the bridge.

Polson Lumber Company (was largest in world), Hoquiam, WA
Sorry, this is not readable because I used anti-wobble.
------------------------------------
In 1891, after logging independently with oxen in the 1880s, Nova Scotian immigrant Alex Polson joined with his brother Robert to start the Polson Brothers Logging Co. By 1900, the brothers were well established, with a short stretch of railroad to the north of town and a log dump on the Middle Fork of the Hoquiam River.
On Sept 12, 1902 - infamouslu called The Dark Day of Western Washington - fire swept through much of northern Grays Harbor's best fir stands, including nearly all timberlands of the Polsons closest competitor, the Merril and Ring company. Within weeks the Polsons accepted Merril & Rings offer to merge their two companies, choosing as the firms new name the Polson Logging Company.
By 1910, the company had expanded into a veritable timber empire, widely recognized as the largest logging operation in the world. The Polson's extensive railroad network, linking 12 logging and construction camps with more than 100 miles of track, allowed an annual dump of as much as 300 million board feet of logs into the Hoquiam River for transport to Harbor mills. Much of this timber was sawn by the Polson's own sawmill the huge Eureka Lumber and Shingle Company -located at the foot of the Ontario Street between 1914 and 1940.
When the Polson Logging Company sold their entire operation in 1948 to Rayonier, Inc.the era of the large scale, family controlled logging was nearly finished on Grays Harbor.
------------------------------------------
The Polsons operated 2 steam tugs, the Pilot and the Petrel, to pull log booms for their log dump. An extensive channel system of piling and floating logs extending down the river kept the rafts from hanging up on the banks.

The Fate of the Submarine H.L. Hunley
On February 17, 1864, in the waning years of the Civil War, the Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley pressed a black powder explosive against the side of the Union ship USS Housatonic and sank it, becoming the first submarine ever to be successful in combat. Even though the submarine was raised in the year 2000, efforts to conserve her only deepened the mystery of why she sank, as the remains of the crew were all found seated peacefully at their battle stations with no signs of trauma or attempts to escape the doomed vessel. Dr. Rachel Lance, an expert in biomedical engineering from Duke University, will present an illustrated lecture on her research, and findings as to the fate of the Hunley and her crew.
Presented in partnership with the Washington Area Maritime Archivists Curators and Historians Group.
The Collapse of Galloping Gertie (The Tacoma Narrows Bridge)
On November 7, 1940, the bridge spanning the Tacoma Narrows Strait of Puget Sound collapsed after moving dramatically up and down during high winds. The bridge garnered the name Galloping Gertie, because of the motion it made before collapsing. STEM in 30 hosts, Marty and Beth visit the spot where Galloping Gertie stood and take a look at the two new bridges that span the strait.
