THE RELOCATION OF THE ABU SIMBEL TEMPLES - EGYPT

The Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock temples at Abu Simbel (أبو سمبل in Arabic), a village in Nubia, southern Egypt, near the border with Sudan. They are situated on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km southwest of Aswan (about 300 km by road). The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Nubian Monuments,[1] which run from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae (near Aswan). The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, as a lasting monument to himself and his queen Nefertari, to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Their large external rock relief figures have become iconic.

The complex was relocated in its entirety in 1968, on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, high above the Aswan High Dam reservoir. The relocation of the temples was necessary, or they would have been submerged during the creation of Lake Nasser, the massive artificial water reservoir formed after the building of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile River.
In 1959, an international donations campaign to save the monuments of Nubia began: the southernmost relics of this ancient human civilization were under threat from the rising waters of the Nile that were about to result from the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

One scheme to save the temples was based on an idea by William MacQuitty to build a clear freshwater dam around the temples, with the water inside kept at the same height as the Nile. There were to be underwater viewing chambers. In 1962 the idea was made into a proposal by architects Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry and civil engineer Ove Arup. They considered that raising the temples ignored the effect of erosion of the sandstone by desert winds. However, the proposal, though acknowledged to be extremely elegant, was rejected.

The salvage of the Abu Simbel temples began in 1964 by a multinational team of archaeologists, engineers and skilled heavy equipment operators working together under the UNESCO banner; it cost some $40 million at the time. Between 1964 and 1968, the entire site was carefully cut into large blocks (up to 30 tons, averaging 20 tons), dismantled, lifted and reassembled in a new location 65 meters higher and 200 meters back from the river, in one of the greatest challenges of archaeological engineering in history.Some structures were even saved from under the waters of Lake Nasser. Today, a few hundred tourists visit the temples daily. Guarded convoys of buses and cars depart twice a day from Aswan, the nearest city. Many visitors also arrive by plane, at an airfield that was specially constructed for the temple complex.

The complex consists of two temples. The larger one is dedicated to Ra-Harakhty, Ptah and Amun, Egypt's three state deities of the time, and features four large statues of Ramesses II in the facade. The smaller temple is dedicated to the goddess Hathor, personified by Nefertari, Ramesses's most beloved of his many wives. The temple is now open to the public.

The Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock temples at Abu Simbel, a village in Nubia, Upper Egypt, near the border with Sudan. The temples are situated on the western bank of Lake Nasser, about 230 km (140 mi) southwest of Aswan, about 300 km (190 mi) by car. The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Nubian Monuments, which run from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae (near Aswan).

The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside in the 13th century BC, during the 19th dynasty reign of the pharaoh Ramesses II. They serve as a lasting monument to the king and his queen Nefertari, and commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Construction of the temple complex started in approximately 1264 BC and lasted for about 20 years, until 1244 BC.

The Great Temple was dedicated to the gods Amun, Ra-Horakhty, and Ptah, as well as to the deified Ramesses II himself; all four seated figures can be seen as rock cut sculptures on the back wall of the sanctuary.

The Small Temple was built about one hundred metres northeast of the temple of pharaoh Ramesses II. It was dedicated to the goddess Hathor and Ramesses II's chief consort, queen Nefertari. This was in fact the second time in ancient Egyptian history that a temple was dedicated to a queen. The first time, Akhenaten dedicated a temple to his great royal wife, Nefertiti.

The temples were relocated in its entirety from 1964 to 1968 on an artificial hill made from a domed structure, 64 metres above the Aswan High Dam reservoir and 200 metres back from the river. The relocation of the temples was necessary or they would have been submerged during the making of Lake Nasser, a massive artificial water reservoir formed after the building of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile River.*

We got a extremely rare permission to film inside Abu Simbel Temple in Egypt. The Abu Simbel temples are two massive rock temples at the southern Egypt near the border with Sudan. The complex is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the Nubian Monuments”, which run from Abu Simbel downriver to Philae near Aswan. The twin temples were originally carved out of the mountainside during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC, it’s a purpose is to impressing Egypt's southern neighbours, and to reinforce the status of Egyptian religion in the region. It also serve as a lasting monument to himself and his queen Nefertari, as well as to commemorate his victory at the Battle of Kadesh. In 1959, an international donations campaign began to save the monuments as it was under threat from the rising waters of the Nile that result from the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

Between 1964 and 1968, UNESCO carefully cut the monuments into large blocks weighting up to 30 tons, and reassembled to the current new location, 65 meters higher and 200 meters back from the river, in one of the greatest engineering challenges in the history.

EGYPT - Nefertari's Temple of Hathor at Abu Simbel

The smaller temple at Abu Simbel is Nefertari's Temple of Hathor. Hathor the cow goddess was the wife of the sun god, Re. So either Ramses was real sweet on Nefertari, or (more likely) she nagged him into it. LOL When you gonna build me another temple? You never build me temples anymore like when we were dating. etc. etc.

Inside the hypostyle hall you can see that the pillars have female figures carved on them. These represent Hathor as a woman with the ears of a cow. Hathor figures were very popular in the monumental construction of antiquity and are some of my personal favorites. This footage was recorded June 11, 2012.

EGYPT - The Great Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel (Part 1)

Officially known as the Temple of Re-Harakhte (Re being the sun god), the main temple was dedicated to the pharaoh Ramses II and to the four universal gods Ptah, Re-Harakhte, Amun-Re, and to Ramses himself.

Filming is only allowed outside of the temple, so I attempted to capture the feel as one approaches it. This footage was recorded June 11, 2012.

Дважды в год - в день рождения 22 февраля и в день коронации Рамсеса II 22 октября - первые лучи восходящего солнца, пройдя расстояние 65 м от входа в храм, освещают левое плечо Амона-Ра, Рамсеса и Хармакиса. Через 20 минут свет исчезает, никогда не падая на бога тьмы - Птаха. В эти дни в Абу-Симбеле всегда много туристов, и жители города устраивают красочные праздники, с музыкой, танцами.

Twice a year - the birthday on February 22 and the day of the coronation of Ramses II October 22 - the first rays of the rising sun, having a distance of 65 meters from the entrance to the temple, cover your left shoulder of Amun-Ra Ramses and HARMAKHIS. After 20 minutes, the light fades, never falling god of darkness - Ptah. In these days in Abu Simbel is always a lot of tourists and residents satisfied with colorful festivals, with music, dancing.

This outstanding archaeological area contains such magnificent monuments as the Temples of Ramses II at Abu Simbel and the Sanctuary of Isis at Philae, which were saved from the rising waters of the Nile thanks to the International Campaign launched by UNESCO, in 1960 to 1980.
