Horseback Canyon Ride in New Mexico with Stacy Westfall
We started out this ride on the road where we parked the horse trailer but soon we were following an arroyo, a dry river bed, to find our way to this old homestead. Most of this was filmed on BLM land.
We have been staying in New Mexico at Kiva RV Park and Horse Motel which is owned by Robert and Diane Wiltshire. Diane volunteered to be our tour guide and I am so glad that she did, especially on this day.
Newt DID do some of the filming…both from on his head and from on his girth…motion sickness warning for that part, lol.
I have to admit that before riding here I was just thinking of New Mexico as a stop on the way to Arizona and California but now I can see why it is called the land of enchantment. Diane also gave us a book, Saddle Up, New Mexico: The Statewide Horse Trail and Travel Guide, I think she is trying to tempt us into coming back..and I think it is working!

The Journey Begins
On May 25th, Parker Flannery and his friends Ben Masters and Mike Pinckney set off on their trail ride up the Continental Divide from Canjilon, New Mexico. Two of the horses (the bays) that went with them are BLM mustangs adopted from long-term holding pens in Oklahoma this past winter. One of the horses, Cassie, was adopted by the Cimarron Sky-Dog Reserve, a wild horse sanctuary in New Mexico. Parker, a trainer with the Mustang Heritage Foundation, trained these two horses and here they all are setting off on the trail! Good luck boys! Stay safe and have fun. We'll miss you!
2015 update: The ride was a success! All returned home safe and sound. ... including Cassie. The Cimarron Sky-Dog Reserve dissolved its non-profit but all of the horses still live free on 1,100 acres at Shadowlands Ranch, a private ranch in Watrous, NM.

Middle Rio Grande video
This is a flight that several of us on the Rio Grande Silvery Minnow Independent Science Panel took on 31 January 2017. We're flying from north to south on the east bank of the river. You can see a variety of features in the video including both the channelized and complex sections of the river, the three diversion dams (Angostura, Isleta and San Acacia), the ABQ water treatment plant, and some habitat restoration projects (cleared areas of bank planted with trees in lines, backwater channels, etc.). Todd Caplan who is manager of the panel and his company Geosystems Analysis Inc. arranged the flight. Thanks Todd!
